Football: Chelsea target Pulisic not for sale in January, say Dortmund

BERLIN (AFP) - Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund have insisted Chelsea-target Christian Pulisic will not be allowed to leave in the January transfer window.
According to British media reports, Chelsea are interested in the 20-year-old US international, but Dortmund, who want €50 million (S$78 million) for the right winger, have blocked a possible departure next month.
"We won't let any important players go who are indispensable to achieving our sporting goals," director of sport Michael Zorc told Sport Bild magazine with Dortmund seven points clear in the league table.
"I strongly assume that Christian will still be wearing the Borussia Dortmund shirt in February."
Head coach Lucien Favre often prefers England international Jadon Sancho on the right wing, leaving Pulisic, who has also been linked to Liverpool, to start just four of Dortmund's 14 Bundesliga games so far this season.
However, the fleet-footed American has started four of Dortmund's six Champions League group stage games including Tuesday's 2-0 win at Monaco when Raphael Guerreiro scored both goals to put the Germans in Monday's draw for the last 16.
Germany midfielder Julien Weigl, linked to both Arsenal and Roma, is another big-name player struggling for game time who has been told he is going nowhere.
The 23-year-old has been relegated to the Dortmund bench following the arrival of Belgium's World Cup star Axel Witsel.
It also looks as though Japan international Shinji Kagawa also has no future at Dortmund as the attacking midfielder failed to make the 18-man squad for Monaco, despite seven players being ruled out.

Football: Firmino sparks five-goal Liverpool as leaders open nine-point gap

LONDON (REUTERS) - A Roberto Firmino hat-trick proved the highlight of Liverpool's 5-1 demolition of Arsenal as the Premier League leaders opened a nine-point gap over Tottenham Hotspur, who lost 3-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wembley.
With third-placed Manchester City playing Southampton on Sunday (Dec 30), Liverpool capped an astonishing month with their ninth successive league victory to leave manager Juergen Klopp conceding that he "had nothing to moan about".
Struggling Cardiff City and Fulham bolstered their survival chances with added-time goals in 1-0 wins at Leicester City and home to Huddersfield Town respectively.
Brighton & Hove Albion beat Everton by the same score and Watford equalised late to draw 1-1 with Newcastle United.
Anfield has become such a fortress that even the unexpected setback of Ainsley Maitland-Niles' early goal did not knock Liverpool off their stride.
Within minutes, Brazilian Firmino hit them with a scoring one-two - his second goal a brilliant solo effort - with a further strike from Sadio Mane and a penalty from Mohamed Salah following before halftime.
Firmino rounded off the scoring with another spot kick as Liverpool, who next travel to Manchester City on Thursday, cruised home to leave no one in doubt as to their title credentials.
"(Manchester City) is a huge one," said Liverpool full back Andy Robertson.
"But in December we've knocked the games off one by one and we've now got a healthy lead. We look forward to it."

Tottenham's day could hardly have started better with England's Harry Kane marking his award of an MBE for services to sport in the New Year Honours list with a stunning left-foot strike that looked likely to kick off another goalfest.
But the inconsistent visitors from the Midlands refused to roll over and hit the home side with three goals in 18 second-half minutes through Wily Boly, Raul Jimenez and Helder Costa as Wembley was silenced, along with talk of Tottenham's title challenge.
"We have achieved something very special in getting to the Premier League and it has been a very special year," said delighted Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
"We had a lot of belief after the equaliser, I would have said a draw was a good result, but I cannot control the emotions of the boys if they see space in front of them."

MITROVIC WINNER

The drama came even later at Fulham where Aleksandar Mitrovic scored the winner in stoppage time to frustrate their relegation rivals Huddersfield.
Fulham's joy was all the greater because they had earlier missed a penalty amid extraordinary scenes after their players tried to take the ball off Aboubakar Kamara as he stepped up to take the spot kick.
His team mates wanted Mitrovic to take the penalty but Kamara refused, disobeying the orders of Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri, only to look deeply embarrassed seconds later when his effort was saved by Jonas Lossl.
Ranieri was not amused: "I said to Aboubakar Kamara to leave the ball to Aleksandar Mitrovic, he is the man who shoots the penalties. It is unbelievable, he did not respect me, the club, the team and crowd. I spoke with him, it is not right.
"I want to kill him, that is normal when one man takes a ball, only because he scored the last penalty (against Manchester United). It should be Mitrovic, that is it."
At Leicester, Cardiff's Neil Etheridge saved James Maddison's 75th minute penalty to set up a victory secured by Victor Camarasa's stunning stoppage time strike for the Welsh side, who are now four points above the drop zone.
Brighton finish the year comfortably in mid-table after Juergen Locadia's second-half goal was enough to see off Everton.
At Vicarage Road, the sought-after substitute Abdoulaye Doucoure scored Watford's equaliser before then wasting a late chance as the home side almost secured a comeback win against Newcastle.

Football: 'Difficult' for Kane to play for Spurs again this season, says Pochettino

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino says it will be "difficult" for Harry Kane to play for Tottenham again this season after the forward suffered an ankle injury during their Champions League win over Manchester City.
The England captain, who suffered a "significant lateral ligament" injury in the 1-0 first-leg victory on Tuesday, is susceptible to ankle damage - this is his fifth ankle injury since 2016 and the second to his left joint this year.
"He was so upset after the game, it was a difficult moment for him," Tottenham boss Pochettino said ahead of his side's home match against already relegated Huddersfield on Saturday (April 13).
"We feel so disappointed and it was difficult to accept the situation," he added.
"He is now much better. He had the scan yesterday and he needs to see the specialist next week. He is in a good place because he is a positive guy."
When asked if he believes Kane could return this season, Pochettino said: "We'll see. There is five weeks, it is going to be difficult.
"Next week we are going to see with the specialist. We are going to do everything to recover him as soon as possible."
Kane has come back ahead of schedule on a number of occasions after his ankle problems, including this year, when he returned two weeks early.
There have been suggestions that Kane has rushed back previously when it would have been better to let the injury heal for longer but Pochettino said his problems were mostly down to bad luck.

RECURRING ISSUES

"Of course, if you come back and it happens again in the first game after injury, we can talk about whether we weren't right to force him to play," he said.
"He played a lot of games and the reason is not that. The reason is there was an action, an accident and it happened again.
"There is a lot of coincidence but we are talking about an accident. Nothing to do with his rehab of the past."
Kane is thought to have targeted a possible Champions League final on June 1 or England's Nations League semi-final against Holland on June 6 for his return to action.
And Pochettino would have no problem with allowing Kane to head off to the Nations League in Portugal even if he had not returned for Tottenham.
"You know me very well, after six years working in England that always my will is to help the national team. I am never going to tell a player not to go to the national team," he said.
"I think the first interest now is to try and provide Harry with the best condition and tools to recover as soon as possible and hope he can help us at the end of the season, and help England win the title they are going to fight for in the summer."
Spurs midfielder Dele Alli also fractured his left hand during Tuesday's match.
Pochettino is hopeful Alli will be fit for the second leg of the Chamipons League match but admits the England international is unlikely to face Huddersfield.

Football: Lewandowski brace seals German Cup and domestic double for Bayern

BERLIN (AFP) - Robert Lewandowski scored a brace as Bayern Munich wrapped up a domestic double with a 3-0 win over RB Leipzig in the German Cup final on Saturday (May 25).
Goals from Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman sealed victory for Bayern in an enthralling game at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
The win sees Bayern lift the golden German Cup trophy for the 19th time in their history, just a week after securing a seventh successive Bundesliga title last Saturday.
Both sides probed rather frantically for an opener in the first half, and Manuel Neuer denied Yussuf Poulsen with a reflex save on ten minutes.
It was Bayern who broke the deadlock, though, Lewandowski flicking in a superb header after a fine move on the left from Coman and David Alaba.
Coman had a free run at goal and rounded goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi shortly before half-time, but his shot was cleared on the line by Ibrahima Konate.
Emil Forsberg had a similar chance for Leipzig just after the break, but came off second best in a one-on-one with Neuer.

A breathless second half saw chance after chance fall at either end, until Coman's 77th minute strike put Bayern out of reach.
The Frenchman found the top corner after elegantly bringing down a loose ball in the penalty area.
He later came off for departing veteran Franck Ribery, who was making his final appearance for Bayern alongside fellow winger Arjen Robben.
By that point it was already 3-0, as Lewandowski had broken free of the back line and lifted the ball over Gulacsi to secure victory five minutes from time.

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Barcelona closed in on the La Liga title on Saturday (April 20) after earning a hard-fought 2-1 win over Real Sociedad at the Nou Camp, with goals from defenders Clement Lenglet and Jordi Alba restoring their nine-point lead at the top of the table.
Barca lead the standings on 77 points after 33 games, comfortably clear of nearest challengers Atletico Madrid who won 1-0 at Eibar earlier in the day.
French centre back Lenglet scored his first league goal for the Catalans to break the deadlock against the stubborn visitors right at the end of the first half with a crashing header from Ousmane Dembele's corner.
Sociedad were rewarded for their intelligent display when forward Juanmi equalised in the 62nd minute, sliding in to meet an incisive pass from Mikel Merino and diverting it past Barca's Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
But Barca hit back almost immediately when Lionel Messi picked out Alba, who did his best impression of the Argentine by cutting in from the left wing and producing a magnificent curling finish into the top corner.
The Catalans will be crowned champions for the 26th time if they beat Alaves on Tuesday and Levante next Saturday. They could clinch the title as soon as Wednesday if they win against Alaves and Atletico lose to Valencia.
