Football: Nerveless Ramos gives Spain winning start

VALENCIA (REUTERS) - Spain captain Sergio Ramos scored another "Panenka" penalty to give his side a 2-1 home win over Norway on Saturday (March 23) in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier but it was a far from convincing display from Luis Enrique's side.
Spain made a slick start and took the lead at Valencia's Mestalla stadium when Rodrigo Moreno volleyed in Jordi Alba's cross from close range in the 16th minute and continued to dominate proceedings without carving out many clear chances.
Norway, who had done little in attack, levelled in the 65th minute with a perfectly-taken penalty from striker Joshua King, who blasted the ball beyond David de Gea after Inigo Martinez had hauled Bjorn Johnsen to the floor.
Spain earned a spot-kick of their own six minutes later when Alvaro Morata was tripped by Norway goalkeeper Rune Jarstein, who Ramos easily deceived by chipping the ball down the middle of the goal to score a "Panenka" for the fifth time this season and eighth in his career.

Gunners look for away spark
LONDON • Stellar home form has propelled Arsenal into the Premier League's top four, but their chances of staying there now depends on improving patchy results away from the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners can climb above Tottenham into third place should they avoid defeat at Everton today.
However, with five of their remaining seven league fixtures removed from the comforts of north London, a trip to Goodison Park will be a stern test of whether Arsenal can maintain their hot streak of 16 points from a possible 18.
While Unai Emery's men have been imperious on their home turf - their 10-game winning run in the league was last achieved during the 1997-98 double-winning season - their away form stands in stark contrast with just five victories all term.
As well as Everton, Emery's players must travel to Watford, Wolves, Leicester and Burnley, with the first four teams in the mix for a Europa League spot.
At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Emery admitted his side, who will be without the suspended Lucas Torreira, and have injury worries over captain Laurent Koscielny and Granit Xhaka, face "a big challenge".
The Spaniard, who also confirmed Mesut Ozil was in line to make just his fifth away start this league campaign, added: "We are thinking game by game.
"We want to achieve the same good performances as when we play at Emirates Stadium. We have confidence now, but we know it's very difficult. We know other clubs will take a lot of points.
"We are getting better and being competitive at home. We want to be the same away, but we know that the difficulty is that in each match at home, they (the opposition) can feel better."
But while Arsenal are the only league side without an away clean sheet this season, they tend to raise their game against the Toffees, with seven wins from their last eight league meetings.

'Playthings' Man City, PSG ruining football: LaLiga chief

LONDON • Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are "playthings of a state" who should be kicked out of European competition for violating Financial Fair Play rules, the LaLiga president has said.
Javier Tebas, who has headed the Spanish football's top league for the past six years, warned that the two clubs were putting the entire football industry at risk because of their methods and huge spending power.
"There are clubs who could not care less what their real incomes are when they want to sign a player because they receive incomes from a state," Tebas said, citing Abu Dhabi-backed City and Qatar-owned PSG by name.
"It forces other clubs into an economic situation which is really living on the edge. It skews the balance of the entire European football structure.
"This is no longer sport. This is no longer an industry. It becomes more like a toy, the plaything of a state. And when it's a plaything, kids start playing with other kids. You end up ruining the entire system.
"Manchester City and PSG have created (this effect) across the whole of Europe because the rest of the clubs in Europe want (more) money to compete with these guys."
City last week reacted angrily after a Uefa investigation into allegations of financial fair play irregularities, which may lead to a Champions League ban, was sent for a final judgment at the governing body.
The English champions argue the investigatory chamber is mistaken and has not fully considered the club's response to allegations they mis-stated multi-million-pound sponsorships in their submissions more than five years ago.
Tebas also said English clubs would be making a huge mistake if they backed a new lucrative European Super League as it would ruin domestic football.
He criticised five English clubs - City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea - for being "dishonest" because they had not been transparent whether they support a proposed Super League, which could come into effect in 2024.
One proposal could mean the Champions League format is replaced with four groups of eight teams, with qualification based on historical performance rather than results in domestic competitions.
When the proposals surfaced, the Premier League insisted that all 20 clubs unanimously agreed to protect the domestic league but Tebas said that the leading clubs were saying one thing and doing another.
"This is not a joke what is going on right now. The history of English football and its clubs is in danger.
"National leagues have a culture of dozens of years of rivalries between clubs so the Super League is going to create a disconnect with fans."

Football: Never in doubt, says Klopp, as super Salah joins 50 club

SOUTHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - When Liverpool cleared a corner and the ball arrived at Mohamed Salah's feet 20 yards inside his own half at Southampton on Friday (April 5) there was just one thing on the Egyptian's mind.
A handful of seconds later, after a searing 50-metre run, his left-foot shot flew past Angus Gunn to give Liverpool the lead on a nailbiting night on the south coast.
Jordan Henderson scored another one to make it 3-1 and confirm Liverpool's place back on top of the Premier League, but the defining moment was Salah's drought-busting effort.
He had not scored for eight matches, his worst run at Liverpool, but his 80th-minute intervention could not have been better-timed. It was his 50th Premier League goal for Liverpool and, more importantly, proved that any concern over his form in the title run-in could be put to bed.
With five league games left Salah is undeniably back.
"What a goal! Wow, what a goal!" Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who hugged his striker on the pitch as Liverpool's fans roared out their song about the "Egyptian King".
Salah is the eighth Liverpool player to score 50 Premier League goals, but his half century arrived in only 69 games, three fewer than Fernando Torres, the previous quickest to the mark.

Only two other players in the Premier League era have reached the landmark quicker - Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy and Alan Shearer for Blackburn Rovers.
Klopp told reporters he had never doubted Salah would rediscover his scoring touch.
"It was never in doubt about him being a great player from my side," Klopp said. "It was goal number 50 I heard for Liverpool, that's an incredible number," the German said.
"As a striker, you have chances and each striker is a human being - maybe you have better moments and less good moments. But he is pretty consistent, his physical things are always there. He always stayed calm to deal with the situation."
Liverpool were not at their best, especially in a sluggish first half when they gave the ball away cheaply too often and Southampton threatened to add to their ninth-minute opener scored by Shane Long.
But once Naby Keita levelled with a deflected header in the 36th minute, his first goal for Liverpool, the visitors were relentless in their pursuit of a crucial win.
Klopp's side have now won seven of their last eight Premier League games when conceding the opening goal - a resilience that will be causing concern at relentless Manchester City who now trail by two points having played a game less.
"The season is intense for everyone," Klopp said.
"The performance was not top level but it is about fighting.
"People want us to play like Manchester City, we are unable to do that, we play our own football. We have 82 points now, that is massive in this crazy league and everyone is waiting for us. I am really proud. It is incredible.
"It is a difficult year for everybody, you need to have 70-75 points for the (top-four) Champions League and 90-something for the title.
"We are in the race and that is nice."

Football: Pochettino says 'focused on Spurs' amid talk of Man United interest

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said on Tuesday (Dec 18) that he was committed to delivering results in his current job, in comments that may do little to quell speculation about him replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
Pochettino has emerged as bookmakers' favourite to succeed Mourinho, with the Argentine viewed as a suitable long-term candidate to deliver attacking football and develop young talent at Old Trafford.
The 46-year-old told a news conference he was saddened by Mourinho's departure, and he dismissed what he described as "rumours" over his own future. But he did not flatly deny any interest in replacing the Portuguese.
"I went to send my best wishes to him, I'm so sorry. I have a good relationship with him... he's a good friend and it's sad news," Pochettino told a news conference.
"The business you know very well - a lot of rumours happen. I think after nearly five years there's a lot of rumours about my position as manager at Tottenham. I cannot answer this type of question.
"It's not my business what happens in another club now. I'm focused on training and delivering my best result in this club (Tottenham)."
Pochettino, who joined Tottenham from Southampton in 2014, has guided the club to consecutive top-three finishes in the Premier League, but he is yet to win a trophy.

Former United skipper Gary Neville pointed out on Tuesday that while Pochettino had not picked up any silverware in England, he had a number of qualities that would appeal to United fans.
"My view is they need someone who meets the three key principles of the club - promotion of youth, entertaining football, and to win matches," Neville told Sky Sports.
Pochettino shrugged off the suggestion lightly.
"Of course I respect the opinion of everyone. But people say different things," Pochettino said.

City risk one-year ban from Europe

LONDON • The prospect of Manchester City being banned from the Champions League for alleged breaches of Uefa's Financial Fair Play rules increased on Monday night after it emerged that the investigators charged with examining the case will push for a one-season suspension.
Uefa's independent club financial control body has been investigating allegations that a £59.5 million (S$105.4 million) sponsorship deal that was supposed to have come to the club in 2015 from Etihad Airways was instead paid directly by the club's owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group.
Members of the body, which is led by former Belgium prime minister Yves Leterme, met in Nyon, Switzerland two weeks ago to finalise the conclusions that they will put forward to Uefa's adjudicatory chamber, which will decide on the sanction in the coming weeks.
A report in The New York Times on Monday also corroborated accounts that their recommendation would be a Champions League ban of at least one season.
Speaking in December, Leterme said: "If it is true what has been alleged, there might be a serious problem. This can lead to the heaviest punishment - exclusion from the Uefa competitions."
It is unlikely that such a ban, if authorised by the adjudicatory chamber, would come into effect in time for next season as City would have the right of appeal and could also take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
If City are found guilty, Uefa would have little time to finalise the English side's punishment in time for next season's competition as qualification for the Champions League starts next month, although the Premier League champions do not enter the competition until the group stage begins in September.

  • 1
Investigators are recommending a one-season suspension for Manchester City from the Champions League.

City have strenuously denied any wrongdoing and vowed that they would mount an aggressive response to any effort to bar the club from the competition.
In a statement released earlier this year, the club said: "The accusation of financial irregularities are entirely false. The club's published accounts are full and complete and a matter of legal and regulatory record."
They have also pointed out that many of the allegations of financial impropriety and rule-breaking made against them came to light after they were reported by news media outlets with access to the so-called Football Leaks files, which are widely believed to have been obtained by hacking.
The club have previously been found guilty of breaching Uefa's Financial Fair Play rules, with the investigatory team arguing that a strong punishment is required on this occasion to prevent the regulations being rendered meaningless.
In 2014, City agreed to accept a fine of £49 million related to a breach of the spending rules and to accept some restrictions on transfers.
The latest development came a day after City retained the title and as the club prepared to back Pep Guardiola in the transfer market this summer as he looks to revamp his squad in another bid for a maiden Champions League crown.
The Spaniard became the first manager in a decade to win successive league titles and his players will complete an unprecedented domestic treble if they defeat Watford in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
But Guardiola still believes that his squad need strengthening amid the threat of a transfer ban following a separate investigation, with up to four players possibly signed while defenders Fabian Delph, Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala are set to leave.
He wants to add more physicality and height to his team, which is why he wants to bring in imposing Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri, who is seen as the perfect replacement for 33-year-old Fernandinho.
The Spain international has a €70 million (S$107.7 million) release clause in his contract, which means that if acquired, he would become City's record buy.
Riyad Mahrez, their most expensive purchase at £60 million, though, has no intention of leaving the Etihad despite his lack of playing time since moving from Leicester last summer.
The Algeria forward started only 14 league games, with Guardiola preferring Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane on the flanks, but he revealed he was "very happy here" and was "not going somewhere else because I don't play".

Football: Chelsea's success next season hinges on transfer ban being lifted, says former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Football: Chelsea's success next season hinges on transfer ban being lifted, says former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

SINGAPORE - Maurizio Sarri should be given more time as Chelsea manager, but the club's success next season will also depend greatly on whether it succeeds in getting a transfer ban lifted.
That's the view of former Blues striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who will be in town to catch Chelsea's English Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday (April 28) with local fans the Clarke Quay Fountain Square at the Football Moments event, presented by Chang Beer and organised by Singtel Media.
A win would strengthen Chelsea's hopes for a top-four finish, which also ensures qualification to the Champions League next season. The Blues are fourth on 67 points, one ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal and three head of United in sixth, with three games left this season.
Hasselbaink felt that Chelsea - and Sarri - have to make a statement they are going in the right direction by beating United.
The 47-year-old told the Sunday Times: "The team started the season really well and the expectations were raised because the team went 12 games unbeaten and were top of the table, but a lot of (observers) knew they could not maintain the position because they don't have the squad that Manchester City or Liverpool has.
"Sarri came in with a totally different football style which other teams eventually adapted to, and Chelsea themselves have not really adapted to these changes.
"Sunday will be a very important match and Chelsea must show they can beat a top-six rival away, something they have not done all season.

"And once the season is over, you have to look at the plusses and minuses, and then build on that by giving Sarri more time because the club already made a decision to go with his style by appointing him in the first place."
The Dutchman also believes that Chelsea need to strengthen their squad in the summer, with the London club facing the prospect of losing their top striker Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.
But it will depend on whether the Blues can overturn the two-window transfer ban Fifa slapped onto the club in February for breaching rules related to the signing of players under the age of 18. Chelsea have appealed against the ruling.
Hasselbaink said: "Chelsea definitely need to strengthen the squad, regardless of whether Hazard stays or goes.
"They need a better balance, and in midfield, they also need more creativity, like how Manchester City has in players like Kevin de Bruyne.
"They also need a leftback, centrehalf and most importantly, an out-and-out striker that is top quality."
Hasselbaink (1999, 2001) and Ivorian Didier Drogba (2007, 2010) are the only two Chelsea strikers to top the Premier League's scoring charts in the last 20 years, and he believes he knows why Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain (four goals in 14 games) has struggled since his loan move from Juventus in January.
Hasselbaink said: "You need to be at your physical peak in the Premier League. It's a lot quicker and more physical than the Italian Serie A or Spanish LaLiga.
"Higuain is (31), he needs time to adapt... If he was 26 and arrived in the Premier League, it would have been easier for him, and I am sure he would have done well."

Football: Saints steel themselves for return of Liverpool's Sadio Mane to St Mary's for EPL clash

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Liverpool's bid for their first title since the creation of the English Premier League continues on Friday (April 5) at Southampton, whose St Mary's stadium is a familiar place for a number of Juergen Klopp's side.
In recent years Liverpool have spent about £170 million (S$301.4 million) on signing players from the Saints, including key men Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, both of whom are expected to start the match.
Liverpool raided Southampton heavily in the summer of 2014 when they brought in Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert.
The following year full-back Nathaniel Clyne, currently on loan at Bournemouth, went for £12.5 million and then in 2016 Mane made the move for £34 million. The biggest deal - after a bitter wrangle - was van Dijk's £75 million move last January.
While the Dutchman has transformed Liverpool's defence, Mane's 17 goals this season make him a real threat to the Saints, who are only five points above the relegation zone.
Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand, who played with Mane at the club, knows exactly what to expect from the speedy Senegalese forward.
"He isn't showing any signs of slowing down. I am thoroughly looking forward to it," said Bertrand.
"I've been really impressed with him, I think he has been their main player. I'm sure the other attackers have still produced some fantastic numbers in terms of goals, but I think he has been the one that shines."
Liverpool trail league leaders Manchester City by a point, with Pep Guardiola's side in FA Cup semi-final action against Brighton on Saturday.
Bertrand says that, with the stakes high for both clubs, Friday's clash should be a pulsating encounter.
"It will be a big game. They are fighting to create history and to win the Premier League and we still need the points, so we will also be fighting," he said.
"The better teams are more clinical, more difficult and technically gifted, but at the same time, with that comes more opportunity where they might leave more gaps defensively. You have to take your chances."
The Saints will also have an eye on results elsewhere in the battle against the drop.
Huddersfield Town and Fulham are already relegated, with Cardiff City occupying the final relegation slot in 18th place, five points behind Southampton, Burnley and Brighton.
Though Cardiff do not play this weekend, Burnley visit mid-table Bournemouth while Newcastle United are at Crystal Palace. Newcastle are seven points clear of Cardiff but yet to secure safety.
In the battle for Champions League qualification, meanwhile, fourth-placed Arsenal and fifth-placed Chelsea are level on 63 points.
Arsenal have a tricky trip to Everton on Sunday and Chelsea are at home to West Ham on Monday.

Football: Sala remembered as Cardiff make painful return to action

LONDON (AFP) - A minute's silence was held before Cardiff's first match on Tuesday (Jan 29) since the plane carrying the club's record signing Emiliano Sala disappeared over the Channel Islands over a week ago.
After completing a £15 million (S$26 million) move from Nantes on Jan 19, Sala was on his way from France to take part in his first training session with Cardiff two days later when the aircraft carrying the Argentine and pilot David Ibbotson lost contact.
Visiting Cardiff fans at Arsenal's Emirates stadium unveiled a banner reading: "We never saw you play and never saw you score but Emiliano our beautiful bluebird we will love you forever more."
The captains of both sides laid a bouquet of flowers on the pitch before kick-off, while Argentina shirts and flags were waved among the visiting support.
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock described the past week as the toughest of his career having helped broker the deal that brought Sala to the club.
"I've been in football management for 40 years and it's been by far the most difficult week in my career, by an absolute mile," said Warnock on Monday.
"It's been a traumatic week and even now I can't get my head around the situation. It's probably hit me harder than anyone else as I've met the lad and talked to him for the last six to eight weeks."

Guernsey police suspended the official search for the plane on Thursday, but a privately-funded search has continued.
Top players were among the more than 4,500 contributors to a crowdfunding page which has raised over €360,000 (S$550,000) to look for Ibbotson and Sala.
In Arsenal's match programme, Gunners club captain Laurent Koscielny compared the game to his experience of representing France against England in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks in 2015.
"It is hard to get into the game at times. You have to be professional, but you also feel the emotion, the sadness around you," said Koscielny.
"There are things far more important than football and you don't know what tomorrow will bring. I am very happy that the searches are now continuing."

Football: Rice scores first Hammers goal to defeat Arsenal

LONDON (AFP) - Declan Rice's first West Ham goal secured a 1-0 win over Arsenal in a capital city derby clash at the London Stadium.
The victory in Saturday's (Jan 12) early kick-off saw the Hammers move up to eighth in the Premier League table, on 31 points, ahead of the bulk of the weekend's fixtures.
Teenage midfielder Rice gave himself an early present for his 20th birthday on Monday by scoring the only goal of the game three minutes into the second half.
"I can't put it into the words," an elated Rice told Sky Sports.
"The lads are always on at me to take the shot on more."
West Ham captain Mark Noble was almost as pleased as Rice himself, adding: "I am delighted for this young man to score the goal...He is a special talent and keeps working hard."
Defeat dented Arsenal's bid to break into the top four, with the Gunners still adrift of Chelsea - their next opponents - in the race for a Champions League place.
"It is difficult to win if you don't score," said Laurent Koscielny, the Arsenal defender.
"In football if you give a small chance to your opponent you pay and today we did," he added after a defeat that meant the Gunners had won just one of their last seven away Premier League matches.
Koscielny, looking ahead to next weekend's clash with Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium, said: "It is a home game against an opponent in the top four. We know what we need to do. We need to prepare all week for this important team."
West Ham named Marko Arnautovic in their starting line-up despite the Austrian forward's brother and agent saying Thursday he wanted to move to the Chinese Super League.
And it appeared Arnautovic was waving goodbye to the home fans in a London Stadium record of over 59,000 when substituted in the 71st minute.
Former Arsenal favourite Samir Nasri started against his old club as the midfielder made his Premier League debut for the Hammers.
Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi returned from injury for Arsenal but there was no place in Unai Emery's squad for Mesut Ozil.
The match was goalless at the interval following near-misses by Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi and Hammers playmaker Felipe Anderson.
That all changed in the 48th minute courtesy of Rice, a Republic of Ireland Under-21 international.
Granit Xhaka's poor clearing header fell to Anderson, whose ball came to Rice via a neat lay-off from Nasri and Rice's first-time shot gave Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno little chance.
Arsenal pressed for an equaliser but the Hammers survived three minutes of stoppage time as they held on for victory.

Football: Solskjaer hails impact of 'happy boy' Pogba

Football: Solskjaer hails impact of 'happy boy' Pogba

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Manchester United are now seeing the Paul Pogba he knows from his time in charge of the club's reserve team after the French World Cup winner scored twice in a 3-1 win over Huddersfield on Boxing Day.
Solskjaer's reign as caretaker manager began with a 5-1 win at Cardiff on Saturday, and his dream start continued with a resounding welcome by the Old Trafford faithful.
Nemanja Matic scored the opener, but it was Pogba's second half display and the Frenchman's two goals that spoke volumes about the change in mood at the club in the week since Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager and replaced, until the end of the season, by the popular Norwegian.
Solskjaer coached Pogba as a youngster before the midfielder left for Juventus and United had to pay a then world record £89 million to bring him back in 2016.
"That's the Paul I know," said Solskjaer.
"The Paul I've known since he was in the reserves and youth team with me.
"He has always been a happy boy, he's always had a big smile on his face."

Pogba cut a less than happy figure for much of this season as he clashed with Mourinho and was left on the bench for the Portuguese's final three league games in charge.
"When you score a goal, or two, of course you are happy," Solskjaer said.
"But when you play football for Man United you should be happy. Of course it's a responsibility, but it's an honour and a privilege.
"Paul loves playing for this club. He's a Man United boy through and through, a kid who knows what it means to play for Man United."
DE GEA'S 'DEFINING MOMENT'
The outcome could have been very different, though, but for David de Gea's stunning save to keep out an effort from Laurent Depoitre moments before Pogba's first and United's second goal.
"Dave's save was the defining moment. One of the best saves I've seen," said Solskjaer.
United swiftly went down the other end and Juan Mata and Ander Herrera teed up Pogba to convert an accurate finish from 16 yards.
Pogba had only scored twice in a Premier League game once - in the derby victory at Manchester City in April that ranked as one of the highlights of Mourinho's time in charge.
But he would repeat the trick in Solskjaer's second game in charge, exchanging passes with Jesse Lingard, before beating Jonas Lossl with a spectacular right-foot finish from 25 yards after 77 minutes.
Solskjaer has had a whirlwind week after temporarily leaving his role in charge of Molde to help out the club where he spent 11 seasons as a player.
"It was extra special of course," said Solskjaer of his return as manager to Old Trafford. "But I was surprisingly calm, the boys settled me down really quickly.
"It's special to walk out there, hearing the crowd again singing my song - normally they started after I scored a goal, not before the game after I walked out!
"But it's humbling and made me really proud. Hopefully, my family are proud and my family back home in Norway watching on telly.
"It was a great day, I will never ever forget, I'll never forget these two games."
Huddersfield claimed a late consolation as substitute Steve Mounie outjumped Pogba to head on an 88th minute Alex Pritchard free-kick, setting up Mathias Zanka who slotted in from close range.
"We have seen again today that they play with freedom," said Huddersfield manager David Wagner of Solskjaer's new-look United.
"They penetrate the ball in the right moments. In the first half we came under tremendous pressure but they play with freedom and they still have world-class players. We have seen that today."

Tampines Rovers v Hougang United Our Tampines Hub, tomorrow, 5.30pm
What a difference two months can make. On March 3, Tampines Rovers and Hougang United lined up in a lip-smacking opener to the Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, touted as a clash between potential title rivals.
But Tampines put paid to notions of an even contest, trotting off the Jalan Besar Stadium pitch with a handsome 5-1 win, aided by a red card to Hougang's Justin Hui that preceded the Stags' four second-half goals.
Since then, however, the two teams have had contrasting fortunes in the league.
Hougang have won five of their seven games and currently sit in second. Tampines, meanwhile, have not won any of their last four and are fourth in the nine-team SPL.
As the teams prepare to meet again tomorrow at Our Tampines Hub, Hougang are eager to prove that the first result between the two sides this season was a one-off.
"We all know Tampines are a good team, there's no denying that," said star attacker Faris Ramli, who has scored six SPL goals this season.
"But we all know the 5-1 scoreline did not reflect the game. We suffered a red card at 1-0 down and they made use of the extra player to score more.
"The fact we managed to equalise (to 1-1) with 10 men shows we have the quality to match them."
Tampines coach Gavin Lee was also keen to downplay the thrashing his side handed out.
"In terms of whether the scoreline reflected the quality of both teams, I think it didn't," said Lee.
"Both sides have good sets of players but, on that day and in that game, we were the better team and they didn't perform. When those two factors come together, that (big win) can happen.
"Are we expecting a similar scoreline on Sunday? No. They'll definitely be fired up to prove the previous result was a fluke."

On Tampines' recent struggles in the league, Lee said the team's exertions in the AFC Cup - games usually take place in midweek - have affected their consistency. Most recently, the Stags needed a last-minute goal to beat Myanmar champions Yangon United at Jalan Besar on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old acknowledged that the continental competition is "not easy physically" on his players as the matches are played at "an international tempo".
Lee added: "We've spoken about it as a team and we know it's part of the privilege of playing in a continental tournament... Whether (fatigue) will play a big part tomorrow, I don't know.
"But we've done our usual recovery protocols and hope the players are fresh, and physically and tactically ready."
Despite their good run of form, Hougang are looking to avoid a second loss on the trot, following their gutwrenching 3-2 defeat in injury time by league leaders Brunei DPMM last Sunday. The Cheetahs had led 2-1, and a win would have taken them top of the SPL.
"The loss was a bitter pill to swallow, but we've addressed it as a team and we are in better spirits now," said Faris. "This season, we have shown we have the mental strength to bounce back from our two (previous) losses by winning the next game both times, and we will have to do it again.

We have shown we are capable of competing at the top of the SPL, so this is a game we definitely want to take three points from.

Football: Liverpool restate Premier League credentials as Arsenal end Man United run

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool cut Manchester City's lead at the top of the Premier League to a single point on Sunday (March 10) as Manchester United slipped to their first domestic defeat under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Arsenal.
Chelsea, also in the hunt for the Champions League qualification spots, needed a last-gasp equaliser from Eden Hazard to earn 1-1 draw against Wolves.
A disappointing run of results has badly dented Liverpool's bid for a first English league title since 1990 and fans' nerves were jangling after they fell behind against struggling Burnley at Anfield on Sunday.
But Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane both scored twice as Jurgen Klopp's team battled back to win 4-2, lifting them to 73 points, one behind Pep Guardiola's City, who saw off Watford on Saturday.
"The message from today is that nobody gets rid of us," said a defiant Klopp, whose team had won just two of their previous six Premier League matches.
"We had the perfect mixture of fighting the opponent and playing football.
"All we have to do is make sure that we stay in this really interesting competition on top of the table. We have no problem with confidence, we're in a good moment."

Tottenham's third defeat in four Premier League matches on Saturday has thrown the race for the top four - the passport to the Champions League - wide open.
United travelled to the Emirates Stadium brimming with confidence after their astonishing Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.
Solskjaer had won 13 and drawn two of his previous 15 league and cup fixtures since succeeding the sacked Jose Mourinho in mid-December but they fell behind in the 12th minute.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RACE

Granit Xhaka's strike from distance swerved through the air to wrong-foot United goalkeeper David De Gea.
Both teams went close thereafter, with Fred hitting a post and Romelu Lukaku guilty of wasting some gilt-edged chances but the home side doubled their lead midway through the second half when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored from the penalty spot after Fred was penalised for bringing down Alexandre Lacazette.
Arsenal's 2-0 victory lifted Unai Emery's side into fourth, just one point behind north London rivals Spurs and meant they leapfrogged United in the process as they target a return to the Champions League after two seasons away from Europe's top club competition.
"We created so many more chances today than when we beat them in the FA Cup," said Solskjaer.
"Sometimes it happens, we hit the woodwork twice and had five very big chances ourselves. The referee will be disappointed when he sees it as I don't think it is a penalty.
"We just had to go for it towards the end, but we were not really at it and it is one of those days where you have to dust yourselves down from."
The win was soured by an incident in which a fan ran onto the pitch and appeared to bump into Chris Smalling after the spot-kick - it followed an incident in the earlier Championship game, when Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish was punched by a pitch invader during the match against Birmingham.
Earlier, Hazard came to Chelsea's rescue in injury time, firing in from long range to grab a point against Wolves at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea enjoyed the bulk of the possession but Wolves took the lead through Raul Jimenez in the 56th minute with their first shot on goal after an incisive counter-attack and looked on track for an impressive win until Hazard struck.
Chelsea remain in sixth place, on 57 points, but manager Maurizio Sarri is confident his team can secure Champions League qualification.
City beat Watford 3-1 on Saturday thanks to Raheem Sterling's 13-minute hat-trick but Spurs, on the fringes of the title race just two weeks ago, slumped to their third Premier League defeat in just four games against Southampton.
There were also wins on Saturday for Brighton, Cardiff, Bournemouth, Leicester and Newcastle.

They were touted as dark horses for this year's Singapore Premier League (SPL) title but, after the first week of the season, Hougang United find themselves in the same place they were at the end of last term - bottom of the table.
The Cheetahs crashed to a 5-1 defeat by Tampines Rovers at the Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday after playing most of the second half with 10 men, following the 50th-minute sending-off of Justin Hui.
The 21-year-old midfielder picked up two yellow cards in the space of just three minutes and 40 seconds to receive his marching orders from referee G. Letchman.
Tampines had led 1-0 at that point, thanks to a first-half goal by Irwan Shah and, even though the Stags were pegged back by Faris Ramli's 56th-minute penalty, they went on to assert their dominance and rack up a handsome win.
Hougang head coach Clement Teo, who felt there was no "ill intent" in the challenge that earned Hui his second yellow card, was sanguine after the game.
"Yes, the match was frustrating in terms of the result," said the coach. "But, if you're talking about effort, I can't fault my players. When you are a man short against a quality team like Tampines, you have to face the consequences. I'm not worried about this result."
Revealing that he was filling out the substitution card to replace Hui just before the player committed his second offence, Teo added wryly: "We were just a little too slow."
The first half proved to be a cagey affair, but it was Tampines who drew first blood after full-back Irwan Shah charged into the box on the stroke of half-time and fired home.
Winger Faris then earned and converted the penalty that levelled the score, but the goal proved a false dawn for the Cheetahs.
Tampines made full use of the extra man and scored three times in 12 minutes through Ryutaro Megumi (64th min), an own goal by Hougang skipper Zulfahmi Arifin (71st) and substitute Zehrudin Mehmedovic (76th). Jordan Webb added a fifth in injury time.
The Stags' first-team coach Gavin Lee admitted that Hui's red card gave his team "greater control of the game" but, while he was happy with the win, he was not completely satisfied with his team's performance.
"We got the points we wanted, but we can't... overlook certain phases of performance which should have been better," said the rookie SPL coach.
While he praised his team's pace on the counter-attack, he insisted that he would not get carried away by yesterday's result.
"Our challenge is to stay consistent in our thinking and action and, hopefully, we can sum it up at the end of the season and see (a positive outcome)," he said.
