Football: Klopp hails 'best night' of his life after ending final hex

MADRID (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp revelled in the biggest night of his managerial career on Saturday (June 1) after winning Liverpool's sixth Champions League title, ending a run of six straight losses in finals.
Klopp had lost his two previous Champions League finals, against Bayern Munich as Borussia Dortmund boss in 2013 and last year against Real Madrid, the 2016 Europa League final and three domestic cup finals in Germany and England.
"I'm so happy for the boys, I'm so happy for my family, they suffer every year when we go to a final... they deserve it more than anybody," Klopp said to BT Sport.
"It's maybe the best night of my life."
Liverpool clinched their first European trophy since 2005 after a poor contest with fellow Premier League outfit Spurs, and Klopp hailed his side's guts to win the title despite obvious tiredness.
"Did you ever see a team like this, fighting with no fuel in the tank any more?" a jubilant Klopp added.
"This is great for our development because it's always like we'd be doing good steps but people say 'so what you didn't win anything'."

Managers in Germany are usually doused in beer after winning a trophy but when asked about that tradition, Klopp laughed: "Usually 20 minutes after the game I'm already half pissed, and here I didn't even get a water!"

LONDON (REUTERS) - Premier League leaders Manchester City recovered from two goals down to beat Championship side Swansea City 3-2 at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday (March 16) and progress to the FA Cup semi-finals.
Having secured a last-eight spot in the Champions League to go with their League Cup title, City made a strong start as they looked to continue their quest to become the first side to win all four major trophies in an English season.
However, they were opened up after 20 minutes by Connor Roberts who drew a foul from Fabian Delph in the penalty area and Matt Grimes converted from the spot to give Swansea the lead.
Nine minutes later it was two as former Manchester City youth player Bersant Celina finished off a flowing Swansea move to stun his former employers.
The Premier League side struggled to break Swansea down after the break, but Bernardo Silva's goal in the 68th minute got the visitors back in the match.
From then on in it was all Manchester City and an own goal off the back of Swansea goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt after substitute Sergio Aguero's 77th-minute penalty had hit the post levelled the tie.
Aguero missed a glorious chance to score but the Argentine striker had the final say when he headed the winner two minutes from time from what looked an offside position.
"We spoke at halftime that we need one goal and after we score one goal the rest will be easier," City manager Pep Guardiola said.
"But the spirit and persistence helped us to win the game."
Guardiola named a strong side for the trip to Wales, but left leading goalscorers Raheem Sterling and Aguero on the bench.
City still had plenty of firepower on the pitch but Swansea stood firm in the early stages and after Roberts was upended in the box Grimes stroked home his penalty with aplomb.
Swansea then carved City open with a slick passing move and it was superbly finished off by Celina.
"We try to play that way," Swansea manager Graham Potter said of the second goal.
"I said before the game if you do be yourself you might just get a miracle."
After Bernardo Silva's superb finish with the outside of the boot got his side a foothold in the match, Aguero was presented with the perfect chance to draw City level after Sterling had been felled in the penalty area. City knew their luck was in after Aguero's spot-kick went in off the back of Nordfeldt but the keeper then brilliantly denied Aguero from close range.
Aguero had the last laugh, however, when he headed his 28th goal of the season in all competitions, although he appeared to be offside and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system was not being used in the match to the dismay of the Swansea fans.
"All around Europe there is VAR," Guardiola said.
"Here there is not. I don't like to win in that way. I am sorry."

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City swept back to the top of the Premier League as Gabriel Jesus struck twice in the championsâ€™ 3-1 win over Everton, while Christian Eriksen kept Tottenham in the title hunt in a last-gasp 1-0 victory against Burnley on Saturday (Dec 15).
Jesus hadnâ€™t scored a Premier League goal since August, but the Brazilian striker ended that drought to put Everton to the sword at the Etihad Stadium.
The 21-year-oldâ€™s goals and a strike from Raheem Sterling put City two points ahead of second-placed Liverpool, but Jurgen Kloppâ€™s team can regain top spot if they beat bitter rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
City coach Pep Guardiola, whose team had surrendered pole position with their loss at Chelsea last weekend, was pleased to see Jesus get back on track.
â€œIt is so important for him, strikers need to score goals,â€ said Guardiola.
â€œWhat he has done today, he has done in other games but the difference is he has scored goals.
â€œHe has done it in a fantastic way. It was so valuable, his performance.â€
Jesus opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a cool finish from a tight angle after Leroy Saneâ€™s pass opened up the Everton defence.
Guardiolaâ€™s side had to wait just five minutes after the break to make it 2-0, when patient build-up found Sane on the left and the Germanâ€™s cross was met by a bullet header from Jesus.
Everton got back into the game in the 65th minute when Dominic Calvert-Lewinâ€™s header from a high-hanging Digne cross flicking off Fabian Delph and past the helpless Ederson.
But Sterling came off the bench to end the contest four minutes later when the City winger met Fernandinhoâ€™s cross with a firm header.
City were also cheered by the return of playmaker Kevin De Bruyne as a 75th minute substitute after a six-week lay-off with his second knee injury of the season.

Late show for Spurs

At Wembley, Tottenham left it until stoppage-time before finally breaking Burnleyâ€™s stubborn resistance as the north London club moved within five points of the leaders.
Mauricio Pochettinoâ€™s third-placed side featured a first league start for 18-year-old midfielder Oliver Skipp, with Eriksen and Son Heung-Min on the bench.

LONDON â€¢ Premier League clubs have come out fighting in the face of sweeping proposals to change the Champions League format, insisting they will "vigorously defend" the domestic game.
The 20 teams issued a statement after a meeting in London on Friday when they were told of moves by the European Clubs' Association (ECA) to significantly expand the number of European matches, and replace the system where the top four English teams qualify for the Champions League.
The chairmen were told that the threats to the league were two-fold. Firstly, changes to the calendar from 2024 could see the slots available for domestic games cut and those for Europe increased.
Secondly, changing the Champions League to four groups of eight teams, with promotion and relegation rather than teams qualifying from domestic leagues, would negatively impact on the race for the top four, one of the driving forces of fan interest.
The statement read: "All clubs unanimously agreed it is inappropriate for European football bodies to create plans that would alter the structures, calendar and competitiveness of the domestic game and will work together to protect the Premier League."
The extra matches - from six to 14 - would require a radical shake-up of the club calendar. But the clubs have been told that it is a real possibility - the calendar for after 2024 is being determined by the ECA along with Uefa and Fifa.
While legal action is a possibility if the fixture calendar is affected, they also have support from the European Leagues organisation. Lars-Christer Olsson, its president, said: "Our main objective is to safeguard domestic competitions."

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Pep Guardiola's bid to win the Champions League for the first time since 2011 will come under threat from his old friend Mauricio Pochettino when Manchester City face Tottenham in the quarter-final second leg later on Wednesday (April 17).
Guardiola's side must overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit at the Etihad Stadium to avoid extending their manager's frustrating Champions League run.
Guardiola is rightly regarded as the best manager of his generation after trophy-laden spells with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now City.
But despite having access to vast financial backing at all three clubs and coaching some of the world's greatest players, Guardiola has only got his hands on the Champions League trophy twice in his 11-year managerial career.
The Spaniard won it with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, while also earning a winners' medal as a Barca player in 1992.
Some critics see that as a meagre return and the only flaw on Guardiola's CV, placing more pressure on the City manager to lead the English champions to their first ever Champions League success this term.
Aware of the harsh prism through which his European record is viewed, Guardiola went on the defensive when asked on Tuesday if he had extra motivation to win the competition again.
"The Champions League is tough. We fail all the time. Sorry guys, I'm a failure!" he said in an outburst laced with sarcasm.
"Not winning the Champions League in Bayern Munich was a big failure. What can I say?
"Do I have to win it? No. The chairman said I have to win the Champions League three times in a row!
"I didn't come here to win the Champions League honestly. I came here to play the way we played the last 20 months.
"The Premier League is the most important title, to be there every three days competing."
Guardiola's mood throughout a rather tetchy press conference ahead of the Tottenham showdown hinted at the strain he is feeling as City chase an unprecedented quadruple.
They have already won the League Cup, reached the FA Cup final and sit two points behind Liverpool in the Premier League with a game in hand.
Yet City's history bid could evaporate in the space of seven days if they lose to Tottenham and then fail to take maximum points from Premier League matches against Spurs and Manchester United.
"Definitely. If we don't win these games we will be out of two competitions. I've had this feeling for weeks," Guardiola said.
City's chances of advancing to their first Champions League semi-final in Guardiola's three-year reign have been boosted by the ankle injury that has ruled out Tottenham striker Harry Kane, while midfielder Dele Alli faces a late test on his fractured hand.
But Tottenham boss Pochettino insists his team still have a puncher's chance of holding onto the advantage given to them by Son Heung-min's first-leg winner.
"It is difficult when Manchester City plays a final like they will in this game," he said.
"For us to beat them in the first leg was an amazing result, but the tie is still open.
"What we have is the belief. We are going to fight and hope for a very good performance. You need a bit of luck in important moments in the game."
It is a tie with special meaning for Pochettino and Guardiola after they and several of their backroom staffs became friends during their time managing Espanyol and Barcelona respectively.
"The challenge is Guardiola is maybe the best manager in the world," Pochettino said.
"At the same time it is nice to see them. We met in Spain when we played and managed. We have friends in their coaching staff.
"I think he won 25 trophies. He is the most successful manager in the last 10 years for sure. For me, to win a title with Tottenham is a massive dream."

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp saluted his "outstanding" Liverpool title chasers after they stormed back to the top of the Premier League with a 5-0 rout of Huddersfield on Friday (April 26).
Klopp's side scored their fastest Premier League goal ever through Naby Keita after just 15 seconds at Anfield.
Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both netted twice after that as Liverpool put relegated Huddersfield to the sword.
It was the perfect response to Manchester City's win at Manchester United on Wednesday, which had temporarily lifted Pep Guardiola's team above Liverpool into pole position.
City, now two points behind the leaders, can regain first place if they win at Burnley on Saturday, but Klopp was delighted with the way his players kept the pressure on the champions.
"We are happy with the points we have and now we are focused on the next game," Klopp said.
"We have a mindset that works and we try to create problems for each opponent by working hard.
"It's obviously an outstanding group of players, who did well against a Huddersfield side who are much better than the result shows.
"They had proper counter attacks so we needed to be patient and we scored wonderful goals."

Liverpool have won their last 10 matches in all competitions, their best winning run since May 2006 when they reeled off 11 in a row.
"We did everything to make the boys aware of how difficult the game could be. That goes out of the window after 15 seconds," Klopp said of Keita's perfect start.
"He is a complete midfielder. I don't know how many balls he blocked tonight."
Liverpool received a further boost as England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came off the bench for his first place in a year after a serious knee injury.
"It's brilliant, it's so good. It's over a year now. He's such a wonderful person. We are so happy for him," Klopp added.
"It's a perfect day, nothing happened injury-wise and we won."

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Lucas Moura's first Premer League hat-trick helped Tottenham Hotspur climb above Chelsea into third after a 4-0 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town on Saturday (April 13).
With Chelsea not in action until Sunday when they take on title-chasing Liverpool, Spurs cruised past the already-relegated Yorkshire side at their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to move on to 67 points, one ahead of Maurizio Sarri's side.
Spurs also forged four points clear of their neighbours Arsenal, who travel to Watford on Monday.
Two Paul Pogba penalties earned a lethargic Manchester United a 2-1 victory over West Ham United and lifted them above Arsenal into fifth place.
"They played better than us, it is fair to say, I don't think anyone will disagree," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after his side secured only a second win in their last six matches in all competitions.
"We got away with it, sometimes we have lost when we should have won, so over a season it evens itself out."
At the other end of the table, Cardiff City edged closer to the drop with a 2-0 defeat at Burnley, while Brighton & Hove Albion's third successive league defeat, a humiliating 5-0 home loss to Bournemouth, heightened their relegation fears.
In the absence of the injured Harry Kane and the rested Son Heung-min, though, Spurs still made it three wins out of three at their inspiring new home, Victor Wanyama's early goal being followed by Lucas's treble, which featured two late strikes.
The victory was an important one for Tottenham, who face a daunting trip to league leaders Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, before the same fixture takes place in the Premier League next weekend.

LYON (AFP) - Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde shrugged off his team's struggles in front of goal after they were held to a 0-0 draw in Lyon in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday (Feb 19).
The Spanish side had most of the chances at the Groupama Stadium, with Luis Suarez firing just wide in the second half, although it was Lyon who came the closest when Martin Terrier hit the bar early on.
Lionel Messi and Co. were once again left frustrated on the road at the business end of the competition, and have now gone six away matches without winning in the Champions League knockout rounds, scoring just a single goal in that time. It is a run that goes back three years.
Desperate to end Real Madrid's recent European dominance, Barca must now finish the job when the teams meet again at the Camp Nou on March 13, but Lyon remain in the tie.
Barcelona's form needs to improve between now and then, though - they have drawn four of their last five matches in all, and have scored just once, from a penalty, in their last three outings.
"We played good football, but you have to hit the target as well, and we didn't," Valverde said.
"We are on the right road, though, and the tie is still up in the air. We will try to win it in front of our fans.
"I am not happy with the result, but I am happy with the performance and with what we created.
"We didn't score, but that is how it is. It is not easy to win away from home in the Champions League."
The visitors - who started with Sergi Roberto in midfield rather than the out-of-form Philippe Coutinho - had good reason to be wary of their hosts, who have excelled in big games this season.
Bruno Genesio's team had taken four points from a possible six against Manchester City in the group stage and recently won at home to Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.
They are still unbeaten in Europe this season, although this was their sixth consecutive draw.
"It's a satisfying result because it leaves us with a chance for the second leg, and we didn't concede. If we can score at the Camp Nou we'll have a chance of going through," said Genesio.
He admitted that he had hoped for an even better performance, but Lyon were missing their World Cup-winning captain Nabil Fekir due to suspension here.
It was the 21-year-old Terrier who surprisingly started in his place, and he delivered the most exciting moment of the first half for the crowd of almost 58,000 with a thunderous strike from 20 metres out in the ninth minute that was tipped onto the bar by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The same player later shot over at the end of a fantastic move, while Houssem Aouar had earlier been denied by the goalkeeper, but it was Barcelona who enjoyed the longer spells of possession.

Suarez came within inches of breaking the deadlock 20 minutes from time, firing narrowly wide from Jordi Alba's cutback. He has now gone 16 away matches without scoring in the competition.
Coutinho had a powerful shot beaten away by Anthony Lopes, with the Lyon goalkeeper also frustrating Messi and Sergio Busquets as Barcelona dominated but departed without a potentially precious away goal.
"It is a little bit of a disappointment, but there is still the second leg to come and we hope to do better," said defender Clement Lenglet.
At least they extended their unbeaten record against Lyon to seven matches, but there remains hope for the French club ahead of the return.

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United have opened talks with Marcus Rashford over a new and improved contract following the forward's impressive run of form under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, reports said on Tuesday (Feb 5).
The 21-year-old scored his 10th goal of the season in Sunday's 1-0 win at Leicester, becoming the second-youngest player to reach 100 Premier League appearances for United after Ryan Giggs.
Rashford's contract expires next year and while United have the option to extend it until 2021, negotiations are understood to have started over a fresh agreement.
Rashford has started all eight Premier League games since Solskjaer took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, scoring six goals.
The club are also working on a new contract for goalkeeper David de Gea, having last week tied forward Anthony Martial down until at least 2024.
United interim boss Solskjaer said on Friday that Martial and Rashford could create a devastating on-field relationship for years to come.
"They'll play many, many years together, hopefully, so if they get an understanding of each other, because both are very good at coming in off the left," he said.
"If one of them plays centrally, then the other one has to have opposite movements."
Seven wins in eight league games under Solskjaer have lifted United to just two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for Champions League places.

LONDON â€¢ Floral tributes were left at the Cardiff City Stadium yesterday after it was reported that Emiliano Sala, their newly-signed striker, was on board an airplane that disappeared on Monday night while crossing the English Channel.
Sala, who moved from Ligue 1 side Nantes last Saturday for a club-record Â£15 million (S$26.3 million), had been due to attend his first training session with the Premier League club yesterday.
Ken Choo, the Bluebirds' chief executive officer, yesterday issued an official statement in response, saying: "We were very shocked upon hearing the news that the plane had gone missing.
"We expected Emiliano to arrive last night into Cardiff and today was due to be his first day with the team. Our owner Vincent Tan and chairman Mehmet Dalman are all very distressed about the situation.
"We made the decision first thing this morning to call off training with the thoughts of the squad, management staff, and the entire club with Emiliano and the pilot.
"All of us at Cardiff would like to thank our fans, and the entire footballing family for their support at this difficult time. We continue to pray for positive news."
French civil aviation authorities confirmed the 28 year old "was on board the plane" that departed from Nantes for the Welsh capital.
He was one of two passengers on the missing Piper Malibu plane, a small propeller-driven aircraft.
According to the British police, the plane disappeared from air traffic control radar, about 24km north of Guernsey, an island in the Channel, after "requesting descent".
It is not known why the pilot wanted to land so far short of their destination, and the plane was flying at an altitude of 701 metres when it lost contact.
A search and rescue operation started on Monday evening before it was called off due to bad weather.
British and French helicopters and airplanes resumed the search yesterday but, at press time, there was still no trace of the plane.
John Fitzgerald, chief officer for the Channel Islands Air Search, a search and rescue service, told the Associated Press he was "not expecting anyone to be alive".
He said: "I don't think the (UK) Coast Guard are either. We just don't know how it disappeared."
Sala had earned his big-money move to English football's top-flight after enjoying a rise to prominence relatively late in his career.
At the point of his departure, the Argentinian, who did not play over the weekend, had been the joint-third highest goalscorer in the French league on 12 goals, trailing only Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe and Nicolas Pepe of Lille.
The striker, who is known for his old-fashioned physical play, which Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodzic claimed was the "sort you do not see much any more", came through Bordeaux's youth ranks after leaving his home province of Santa Fe.
Having spent his entire professional career playing in France, Sala's former clubs expressed their shock at the turn of events.
Nantes president Waldemar Kita said: "He was a polite, kind and adorable boy, loved by everyone. He was very respectful, very courteous. I am thinking about his family and all his friends."
US Orleans, where he spent the 2012-13 season on loan, tweeted: "Sad news this morning, all our thoughts go to the relatives of Sala and to the relatives of the pilot."
Sala's last post on his Instagram account was on Monday, prior to his flight, saying a "final goodbye" to his former Nantes teammates.
The forward's parents were also in anguish over his disappearance. His father, Horatio, told Argentinian TV's Channel 5 News he was "worried and desperate".
He said: "They are saying that the plane lost control in the Channel. I don't know what could have happened. I am speechless."
This could be the second air-related tragedy to hit the Premier League in a short span. Less than three months ago, Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha died when his helicopter crashed as it was leaving the stadium.

Football: Emery confirms Ramsey has played last Arsenal game

LONDON (AFP) - Unai Emery confirmed on Wednesday (May 1) that injured Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey has made his last appearance for Arsenal ahead of his move to Juventus Ramsey has already agreed to make a lucrative switch to Italian champion Juventus when his Arsenal contract expires at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old suffered a hamstring injury during the second leg of Arsenal's Europa League quarter-final victory over Napoli and has now been ruled out for the rest of the season.
Emery's side host Valencia in the Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday, having lost all three games without Ramsey since he was forced off in Naples.
But, even if Arsenal reach the final on May 29, Emery conceded the game would come too quickly for Ramsey to be involved.
Asked if there was any chance of Ramsey playing one last game for Arsenal, Emery told reporters on Wednesday: "At the moment we are only in the semi-final, and secondly the prognosis is not okay for this date.
"He is important for us. We cannot use him and the danger is always there for a forward player like that.
"We have players who can play in that position, but he was in a good moment when he had this injury.
"For me it was a good experience to work with every player and with him especially, because he can transmit his energy and he showed me his heart is red with Arsenal.
"I wanted to enjoy with him. I said to him one month ago that I wanted to do something important in his last matches with us at the moment - maybe he can come back in the future."

'SO IMPORTANT'

Ramsey, who won three FA Cups with Arsenal, is expected to be fit in time to start pre-season with Juventus, but his absence is a blow to the Gunners' bid to qualify for next season's Champions League either by winning the Europa League or finishing in the Premier League's top four.
Arsenal are planning to hold a guard of honour for both the midfielder and team-mate retiring goalkeeper Petr Cech after Sunday's match against Brighton at the Emirates Stadium - their final Premier League home game of the season.
Laurent Koscielny has played alongside Ramsey since joining from Lorient in 2010 and, in a jibe at previous Arsenal players who have left the club during that time, the Gunners defender hailed his team-mate's attitude since his move to Juventus was announced.
"Of course he played so may years here, so important for the club and the players because every season we start the season and we have new players, and I think he gives a lot for the adaptation of the new players," he said.
"What I like about Aaron is that, we know he signs for Juventus, but he is still a professional and always fights for the club and for the team.
"Sometimes you have players who have stopped fighting for this team, but I think he has loved this club and that is why he stayed at 100 per cent for us. It shows a great mentality and character."
Mesut Ozil is in the squad for Thursday's clash with Valencia after missing the 3-0 weekend defeat at Leicester with a bruised foot, while Nacho Monreal also trained following a groin injury.

LONDON â€¢ Norwich have been a perennial yo-yo club, with three promotions to and two relegations from the Premier League in the past decade.
But, having regained their top-flight status after a three-year absence with a 2-1 win at home to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, they "are ready for the Prem" and intend to stay there this time.
Victory left the Championship leaders - who recorded just one win from their opening six games - nine points clear of third-placed Leeds and secured a top-two place.
The Canaries kicked off at Carrow Road knowing just a point would be enough to secure promotion, and long-range strikes from German midfielder Marco Stiepermann and Bosnia striker Mario Vrancic were enough to see off their opponents, who pulled one back through Lewis Travis.
Afterwards, Northern Ireland defender Jamal Lewis hailed the work done by German manager Daniel Farke, who left his position as the coach of Borussia Dortmund's reserves to take over in May 2017, telling Sky Sports: "He puts his faith in us. Our team is so young but so hungry. It's been an amazing season. It's a moment I'll never forget."
Pundit Chris Sutton agreed, praising the achievement as one of their "greatest ever seasons".
The former club striker told BBC Sport: "I normally associate teams coming up from the Championship with real grit and resolve. Norwich... have played some really good stuff."
The title is still up for grabs and the competition's top scorer Teemu Pukki (28 goals), said that was the team's aim ahead of their final league game at Aston Villa on Sunday. He said: "It (promotion) means a lot... (but) we want to finish the season with a victory."
Norwich are three points ahead of second-placed Sheffield United, who beat already relegated Ipswich 2-0, and were also promoted yesterday after Leeds' 1-1 draw with Villa.
Marcelo Bielsa's team now head for the play-offs, with the winners securing the final promotion place.

Nazri explained: "I have studied Oman's attacking patterns. Malaysia penetrated our flanks a few times and I will make sure that won't happen again.
"We need fresh legs on the flanks who can track back as Oman have fullbacks who are very fast. Whoever gets to play will have to stay very focused."
Nazrul Nazari and Irwan Shah started in the fullback positions but Emmeric Ong and Faritz Hameed are in consideration for starting places.
And Nazri has reiterated his faith in his men - especially 34-year-old veteran Khairul Amri, who laid on the pass for Faris Ramli's 82nd-minute winner against Malaysia.
Nazri said: "Amri pushed till the last minute. I believe in him and he delivered.
"He is still a very dangerous player who is very intelligent and he waited till the right moment to create that goal."
But the Lions can expect no favours from Oman, who are led by Erwin Koeman, the older brother of Netherlands national coach Ronald. The 57-year-old Dutchman, who was capped 31 times, told the Malaysian media: "In football, there can be no excuses, you have to win. We are here to win the cup, as simple as that.
"The expectations will be higher, but that's normal everywhere. It's good, as it will push the staff and players to do a little better.
"It's the mentality, what's inside you, what you can bring, and everybody can always bring a little bit more."
But Nazri believes that the Lions have bought into his ideas, saying: "They (the players) believe in my style. We are not going to sit back (against Oman).
"We will attack them, but we cannot leave gaps behind. When we don't have the ball, everyone is a defender.
"Honestly, I'm very happy with the team, there is nothing more I can ask from them, they gave 100 per cent (against Malaysia). Determination is our weapon."

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Former England international Peter Crouch returned to the Premier League on Thursday (Jan 31) at the age of 38, signing a short-term contract to join Burnley from Stoke City with Wales striker Sam Vokes heading in the opposite direction.
No financial details of the deals were disclosed, but British media reported that Vokes was valued at around Â£9 million (S$15 million).
Crouch was part of the Stoke team relegated to the second-tier Championship last season but has not started a game since September.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool forward, whose deal with Burnley runs until the end of the season, has previously played for six Premier League clubs in his career and scored 108 top-flight goals.
He also won 42 caps for England, scoring 22 goals between 2005 and 2010.
Despite his age, Crouch said he still had the ambition to play at the highest level.
"I still want to achieve things," he told Burnley's website.
"I want to get more games and I would love to add to the 100 Premier League goals.
"My game has probably changed a little bit. I'm not 25. But my attributes haven't waned. I never really had blistering pace, so I haven't lost that. I know I can impact games at this level."
Vokes, who waved goodbye to Burnley fans after the 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday, has signed a 3-1/2-year contract at Stoke, having struggled to secure a regular starting place of late at Turf Moor.
The Wales international won two promotions to the Premier League with Burnley in his seven seasons with the club, scoring 62 goals in 258 appearances.
"It's great to have it finally done," he told Stoke's official website . "It has been a long day and a lot of waiting around but I am delighted - I just can't wait to get started now."
The 29-year-old joined Burnley from Wolverhampton Wanderers and was part of the Wales team which reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016.
"Burnley was a huge part of my life, I really found my home there and I made a lot of good friends there, but it was time for me to move on - and what better club to do that with than Stoke City," Vokes added.

LONDON - It would be easy to simply file this one under "Games Manchester United Won Thanks To David de Gea".
And yet, while that particular cabinet must be bulging after the Spain goalkeeper's latest outstanding performance, the Red Devils' 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (Jan 13) was by no means an injustice.
The travelling United faithful celebrated wildly in the stands at their corner of the stadium for some time after the majority of the 80,000 had exited and had every reason to be thrilled.
For it was the way they saw off Mauricio Pochettino's formidable Spurs side that mattered to them. They were gritty, opportunistic, confident.
Even when Spurs had stirred from their slumber - they did not register a single shot on target in the first half - and started testing de Gea, one effort after another, United's players did not panic.
Jesse Lingard shone brighter than his England teammate Dele Alli, Paul Pogba was a cocky, assured presence at the tip of United's midfield trident, and the duo of Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic behind him, so often the target of fans ire during the Dark Mourinho Days, were excellent.
Centre-back Victor Lindelof, meanwhile, stuck to Spurs' chief goal-scorer Harry Kane like a leech, snapping away at his heels and giving him hardly any room in the penalty box.

Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and de Gea drew jeers and whistles from the home supporters for their time-wasting tactics in protecting their lead, and looked fully in control - something that rarely happened before Mourinho's sacking just before Christmas.
The swagger is back.
It should be noted, though, that the two teams had vastly different build-ups to Sunday's game.
United spent a week basking in the warmth with a training camp in Dubai, while Spurs negotiated a hard-earned 1-0 win over Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final.
This explained in part Spurs' slow start, and United's quickness of thought, which was highlighted by Pogba's superb pass to release Marcus Rashford, who raced past Jan Vertonghen to arrow a shot beyond Hugo Lloris just before half-time.
Much has been made of Spurs' title tilt - which now looks unlikely after two consecutive Premier League losses at home - but United exposed their shallow squad's inadequacies.
When Moussa Sissoko was forced off in the first half, they had no established central midfielder on the bench to come on for him. Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama are on the mend from injuries, while Mousa Dembele has started only seven games and is reportedly on the verge of a lucrative move to China.
Worse still, talisman Kane limped off the pitch after appearing to twist his ankle late on in the game. The team's second highest goal-getter? Asian Cup-bound Son.
Last week, Pochettino, who has been tipped as the leading contender for the permanent manager's job at United, spoke about Spurs having to "operate differently" if they are to take the next step and rub shoulders with the elite of European football. His words were taken as a call for more investment from Spurs, even if he downplayed his remarks later.
If the London club do not spend in the January transfer window, though, the lure of resources at Old Trafford in the summer, could be too much to turn down for Pochettino.
