More racial abuse cases heighten calls for action LONDON • Football authorities are facing more scrutiny over their handling of fans' racial abuse of players after three English clubs reported alleged incidents on Saturday and Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha called out an online message branding him "a diving monkey". The latest incidents came two days after Tottenham defender Danny Rose revealed he "cannot wait to see the back of football" because of the lack of action taken against racial abuse, while Raheem Sterling urged those in charge to take a "proper stance". Among the incidents on Saturday, Brentford confirmed a season-ticket holder was arrested at Griffin Park after confronting Derby's Duane Holmes, who was in the dugout, having been substituted during their 3-3 draw. Derby manager Frank Lampard said: "A fan came up to him and abused him… It was very clearly reported by the players and the people around." In response, Brentford said they "utterly condemn discrimination" and would press for "the most severe sanctions". Wigan issued a statement after their winger Nathan Byrne posted an image of a grossly offensive direct message he received on Twitter after their 2-2 draw with Bristol City at Ashton Gate, with the Lactics saying they reported the incident to the police as a hate crime. Northampton, meanwhile, said their players had been racially abused while walking through Nottingham before their League Two draw with Notts County. Zaha, who was fouled in the penalty area during Palace's 1-0 win at Newcastle, retweeted the abusive message he had received, tagging it "LOL". He then responded to the abuse by writing on Instagram: "For all the people being racist and wishing death on my family, I wish you and your families the best too… my life is still very good despite your hate." Anti-racism group Kick It Out released a statement condemning the latest incidents, tweeting: "Another week, another group of players racially abused… We won't stop highlighting this disgraceful behaviour while it remains deeply ingrained within football. "We'll be liaising with the relevant authorities and offering support to clubs and players involved." Match points: Man City v Tottenham The City academy product Trippier's corner led to Fernando Llorente's decider on Wednesday, but only after Sterling gave him a torrid time. Trippier did not get close enough to his England teammate for either of his two goals. And, if Leroy Sane starts on the left, it is worth remembering he tormented Trippier at the Etihad Stadium last season.De Bruyne has five assists in his last two games. He got three on Wednesday when he was astoundingly good and played like a man possessed. Alli, with a broken hand, was forced into a deeper role after Moussa Sissoko came off and, instead of breaking forward himself, may have to spend much of his time tracking de Bruyne again. Football: Gunners have 'hell of a lot of work to do' LONDON • Riding high until two weeks ago, Arsenal's season has taken a sudden downturn that has thrown the focus firmly on the club's plans for the January transfer window. Before the visit to Southampton on Dec 16, the Gunners had gone 22 games without losing and it seemed like the trajectory of Unai Emery's side was undeniably on the up. The defeat at St Mary's has, however, triggered a downturn with just one win in five games, including Saturday's humiliating 5-1 defeat at Premier League leaders Liverpool. Arsenal now sit five points off the top four and anything less than three points in the home league meeting with Fulham today will further undermine the club's hopes of reclaiming a place in the Champions League. Pundits have already written off their chances, with former Gunner Martin Keown claiming there was "a hell of a lot of work to do". He told BT Sport: "Arsenal are in the beginning of their (project)." Injuries have not helped with defenders Nacho Monreal, Hector Bellerin and Shkodran Mustafi all doubts for the Emirates clash, while auxiliary wing-back Ainsley Maitland-Niles and out-of-favour midfielder Mesut Ozil are also uncertainties. However, goalkeeper Bernd Leno declined to use their growing casualty list - which includes long-term absentees Rob Holding and Danny Welbeck - as an excuse following the mauling at Anfield, urging his teammates to show their mettle against the Cottagers. The opposition are on a three-game unbeaten run. "I don't think that was the difference," the German said. "We as a team made too many mistakes. We have enough quality, even when somebody is injured. "Injuries were not the problem. We have to look forward because we have another important game on Tuesday. "It's the first game of the year and on Tuesday, we want to beat Fulham at home. We need to win." Defender Stephan Lichtsteiner also vowed that the team would "never give up" on their bid to finish among the Champions League places, saying: "We'll aim for that. Until the end we'll work, we'll believe... It's a challenge and one we need to accept." But burly Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who ended a six-game drought to sink Huddersfield at the weekend, will surely relish the challenge of pitting his wits against a makeshift and vulnerable Gunners backline that has already let in 30 league goals - five more than at the same point last term. The Serb, who has scored eight league goals this season, has been their star player and he felt his winner "gives us confidence before facing Arsenal". The coming weeks, starting with Fulham, will go a long way towards shaping the remainder of Arsenal's season. AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

Football: Merlion Cup returns in June with Under-22 sides from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines SINGAPORE - The Merlion Cup will be revived in the form of a mini South-east Asia Games football tournament as the under-22Â national teams from Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines join hosts Singapore in a friendly quadrangular next month. The June 7-9 competition will be held at the Jalan Besar Stadium and will serve as preparations for the four teams ahead of this year's SEA Games in the Philippines. The biennial Games is from Nov 30-Dec 11. At the press conference on Wednesday (May 15), Young Lions coach Fandi Ahmad said: "Football needs to be revitalised in Singapore and the Merlion Cup will be a good opportunity to expose the young players to international football. "All teams are equal and we won't fear any opponents. Hopefully, with good preparation and home support, we will play some good football like we did in the AFC U-23 qualifiers." Football Association of Singapore (FAS) president Lim Kia Tong said the tournament will be an annual affair, although it could toggle between a senior and age-group competition depending on their needs. For this year's edition, Singapore will face the Philippines while the Thais take on the Indonesians in the other semi-final on June 7. The third-placed play-off and final will be two days later. Young Lions defender Lionel Tan said: "We are very excited and raring to go and do Singapore proud by putting up good performances. We will focus on our own strengths and abilities and play to our coaches' instructions." The Merlion Cup had been held annually in Singapore from 1982 to 1986, and once in 1992, and was widely considered the Republic's premier invitational football tournament. It featured countries such as the Netherlands, Australia, Iraq, China, South Korea and international club sides like Inter Milan and Lokomotiv Moscow. It was last held in 2009 at the old National Stadium, when Singapore were beaten 5-0 by English giants Liverpool. In 2015, there were talks of reviving the tournament after international sports media rights agency MP & Silva's $25-million deal with the FAS was announced in February that year. The J-League's Yokohama Marinos, Chinese Super League's Shanghai Shenhua and Myanmar national team touted as likely participants but cost issues saw MP & Silva pull out of negotiations with the Singapore Sports Hub in December 2015 over the staging of the Merlion Cup in 2016. Football: Man United legends thrash Bayern in 1999 charity rematch LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tormented Bayern Munich once again as the Manchester United manager scored in his club's 1999 treble winners' reunion on Sunday (May 26). Twenty years after Solskjaer scored the last-gasp winner that helped Alex Ferguson's side beat Bayern in the Champions League final, the current United boss joined his old team-mates for a charity match against the Germans at Old Trafford. Solskjaer again started on the bench as he did in the Camp Nou final, but he wasted little time after coming on for Andy Cole, turning home the opener after Dwight Yorke was denied. With Ferguson back in the dugout as manager for the day, there was a feelgood factor in the air at Old Trafford for United's 5-0 win after a troubled season for the current generation. It was the first time Ferguson, 77, had managed a United team since his retirement in 2013. He sat with ex-England boss Steve McClaren, his assistant 20 years ago. The reunion match, in aid of the Manchester United Foundation, was also the first time Ferguson had been on the pitch since undergoing major surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage last May. Rolling back the years, David Beckham was firing cross-field balls, Jaap Stam showed no mercy at the back and Paul Scholes bossed the midfield.
They faced a star-studded Bayern squad that included Lothar Matthaus, Stefan Effenberg, Sammy Kuffour and Carsten Jancker from the 1999 starting lineup, as well as former Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis. Solskjaer went off midway through the first half and skipper Peter Schmeichel followed suit shortly after Dwight Yorke scored a superb second for United Legends. Thanks to their two late goals against Bayern, United remain the only English club to win a treble made up of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in one season. As the latest man charged with trying to engineer a return to those glory days he was such an integral part in, Solskjaer's efforts were greeted with enthusiasm by a crowd in excess of 60,000. Popular as he is, the reception for Solskjaer was eclipsed by the one afforded to Beckham. The former England skipper, 44, sold to Real Madrid in 2003 after a fall-out with Ferguson, got a standing ovation every time he went to take a corner. Changes aplenty punctuated the second half rather than goals, with Stam, Scholes and Denis Irwin among those to be replaced to rapturous applause. Nicky Butt netted United's third of the afternoon 11 minutes from time as he coolly stabbed home a Louis Saha cross. Saha, one of the handful of non-treble winners playing for United, slotted home the fourth in the 85th minute as he turned home a Jonathan Greening cross. In a fitting finale, Beckham got behind the Bayern backline and showed quick feet before firing home in front of the Stretford End, leaving Ferguson wreathed in smiles and the crowd on their feet in delight. Football: Real Madrid to sign teenager Brahim Diaz from Man City, reports say MADRID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid are set to sign Spain under-19 international forward Brahim Diaz from Manchester City for an initial fee of around £15 million (S$25 million), according to reports in British and Spanish media on Saturday (Jan 5). Diaz, 19, played a total of only 50 minutes for City in the Premier League last season but has not featured in the league this campaign. He has made three League Cup starts this term, scoring twice in a 2-0 win over Fulham in November. The signing of Diaz is the latest example of Madrid's aggressive transfer policy in recent years which has seen them hoover up young Spanish talent with varying success. They signed Alvaro Odriozola from Real Sociedad last June for a reported €30 million (S$45 million), although the 23-year-old has only started seven of 17 league games this term. Dani Ceballos, a €16 million acquisition from Real Betis in 2017, has also failed to hold down a place in Santiago Solari's side, while Theo Hernandez, who switched from neighbours Atletico Madrid last year, is on loan at Real Sociedad. Even leading Spain internationals such as Marco Asensio and Isco have struggled to make an impact for Madrid this season. Asensio, signed from Real Mallorca in 2014, has only scored once in all competitions this term and is currently injured, while Isco, who joined the club from Malaga in 2013, has not started a league game since October. Despite Madrid's recent targeting of the best young talent in the country, only three Spanish players started in Real's 2-2 Liga draw against Villarreal on Thursday. Dani Carvajal, 26, and Lucas Vazquez, 27, both came through Madrid's youth set up, benefitting from loans at Bayer Leverkusen and Espanyol respectively, while Real captain Sergio Ramos, 32, was signed from Sevilla back in 2005. Bayern eye Chelsea teen LONDON • While the neutral observer may be wondering what all the fuss is about over Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has yet to start in the Premier League, Bayern Munich believe he can be their equivalent of Jadon Sancho. The Borussia Dortmund winger opted to leave Manchester City for Germany in August 2017 in search of more playing time, and the England international has not looked back since, becoming one of the hottest prospects in European football. The six-time defending Bundesliga champions also clearly feel Hudson-Odoi has what it takes to follow in Sancho's footsteps, which is why the English winger has been the subject of four separate bids since last month - the latest being £35 million (S$60.2 million), catapulting the relatively unknown 18-year-old into the limelight. But Chelsea have been incensed at the lengths Bayern are going to court their academy product, who has been handed successive starts in their last two games against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham for the first time in his career. While the club are still hoping a run in the first team, which could continue today in the league against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge, might persuade him to stay, it appears his head has been turned. According to Sky Sports, Hudson-Odoi wants to leave the club and, with only 18 months left on his deal, he holds all the cards. With his contract situation leaving Chelsea in a bind, Blues boss Maurizio Sarri directed his ire at the Bavarian giants at his press conference yesterday, claiming Bayern "did not respect our club" after sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said in midweek Hudson-Odoi was a player they "would definitely like to have".
GETTING BETTER He is working very well at the moment, so I am happy with the player. MAURIZIO SARRI, Chelsea manager, rates the 18-year-old winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is also wanted by German champions Bayern Munich.
He blasted: "It's not professional because they are talking about a player under contract with Chelsea. I am very, very happy with the player because he is improving a lot in the defensive phase. "Now he needs to improve in some movements without the ball. He is working very well at the moment, so I am happy with the player and I would like to have him in the future." The Italian revealed he had recommended to the club hierarchy that two players be signed in the January transfer window, but declined to give any names or state their positions. "I spoke with the club and the club know very well my opinion," he said. He also shot down speculation over Willian's future, despite British media reports linking the "very important" Brazil forward with Barcelona, insisting "it's impossible to lose him in January". However, Sarri hinted that misfiring £60 million club-record signing Alvaro Morata could leave on loan, but reiterated it would only happen if there was a like-for-like "replacement" for the striker, who has scored just five league goals in 16 games this term. Reds fans upbeat, City faithful rejoice There is a saying in football - "it's the hope that kills you" - but it certainly did not apply to the 300 Liverpool fans packed into the Jubilee Ballroom at Four Points by Sheraton Singapore as they prayed for a miracle. They left at the end of the night not with the Premier League title they desperately craved but with renewed optimism that their team have what it takes to get it done next season. Alan Chng, 45, secretary of the official Liverpool Supporters Club in Singapore, said: "No doubt, we're disappointed, but we're also encouraged by the good results we've got this season. With a charismatic manager (Jurgen Klopp) at the helm and, with supportive owners and the fans behind the team, we'll move on from this." Before kick-off, the Reds fans knew everything depended on Manchester City's result at Brighton. No wonder a few had one eye on the large LED screens broadcasting their game against Wolves, and another on their smartphones keeping tabs on City's match. And, for 21 minutes last night, that unlikely scenario played out. The ballroom erupted when Sadio Mane put Liverpool in front and an even more raucous celebration followed when news trickled in that Glenn Murray had given Brighton the lead. "Blow the whistle now ref!", bellowed a Liverpool fan at the back of the room. Laughter almost immediately gave way to groans after Sergio Aguero's equaliser, followed soon after by Aymeric Laporte's header which put City 2-1 ahead. Over at the Thunderbird Bistro along Robertson Walk, about 30 City fans went through a gamut of emotions themselves, particularly in the first half. Equity sales senior vice-president Vincent Ang, 55, who has supported the Citizens since 1977, said: "The match was nerve-wracking but I was confident. It's a new order and City will dominate for many more years to come, we have an awesome team." It was a sentiment shared by the Merseyside faithful inside the ballroom as they belted out You'll Never Walk Alone in the closing stages of the match. David King, 37, a fan for 25 years, said: "This season, we've beaten Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris St Germain in the Champions League, and we achieved a record points tally. A lot of this squad is still young too, so I believe we are going to get there (and win the Premier League) eventually." • Additional reporting by Christie Chiu and Renee Neo Reds boss Klopp turns attention to Champions League As the sun-soaked Liverpool fans retreated to the pubs around the city, the mood remained upbeat. that's all we care about now Liverpool celebrations: Champions League final, You'll Never fans upbeat, City faithful rejoice News Post Enquiry Form for Republication or Keepsake. Solskjaer laments 'poorest' performance LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United team had taken "a big step backwards" after turning in the worst display of his four-month reign, as Wolves sent them packing from the FA Cup with a 2-1 win on Saturday. Marcus Rashford's added-time strike was not enough as Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota fired Nuno Espirito Santo's side into their first semi-final appearance since 1998. This was United's second straight defeat and Solskjaer conceded "quite a lot was missing today" from his players, who were second-best at Molineux. The United caretaker manager said: "It was the poorest performance we've had. "We never had the urgency and quality on the ball, even though without the ball in the first half, we did okay. "There was a lack of urgency going forward and a lack of forward passing and a lack of regains. "We felt too comfortable in possession and we never managed to put their goalkeeper or defenders under pressure. Today, we got what we deserved because we never deserved to win this game."

However, the Norwegian was still upbeat for the rest of the season, claiming that United had "much to play for" as they aim for a top-four finish in the Premier League and progression past Barcelona in the last eight of the Champions League. He said: "We're in a great position in the league, we've got the Champions League. You can't sulk for too long. We've got to look forward and put the result today behind us. "Manchester United in April and May always find their form. We can't wait for the challenge when Barcelona come." While Solskjaer will not lift any domestic silverware this term, newly promoted Wolves, who had upset Liverpool in the third round, are in with a huge shout of winning their first trophy since lifting the League Cup in 1980. And Santo, who has yet to win a major honour in his managerial career, paid tribute to "the amazing support of our fans believing in us", with the 12th man playing its part in spurring his players on against the Red Devils. The Portuguese said: "It means a lot of course. The FA Cup is the oldest competition and we played well. "The noise was fantastic. We achieved it together. Now, we have to prepare for the next one." Wolves captain Conor Coady also felt it was "a deserved result" as the home side "nullified them from start to finish". He added: "We were outstanding. They are an unbelievable club with talented players, (but) we said before in the changing rooms, we have the chance to make history and we now have the chance to go through again." Football: Veteran Quagliarella helps rejuvenated Italy thrash Liechtenstein PARMA, Italy (REUTERS) - Fabio Quagliarella became Italy's oldest goalscorer as his double helped Roberto Mancini's rejuvenated side thrash 10-man Liechtenstein 6-0 in their second Euro 2020 qualifier on Tuesday (March 26). Quagliarella, 36, netted two first-half penalties, while 19-year-old Moise Kean scored his second goal in his third appearance. Stefano Sensi, Marco Verratti and Leonardo Pavoletti also found the net. Liechtenstein were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of halftime when Daniel Kaufmann was sent off for a handball on his goalline. Italy, who have a maximum six points in Group J after a 2-0 win against Finland on Saturday, controlled the midfield through Verratti while Quagliarella set an example with his aggression. The Azzurri, who are rebuilding under Mancini after missing out on the 2018 World Cup, broke the deadlock after 17 minutes as the 23-year-old Sensi's header from Leonardo Spinazzola's cross from the left found the roof of the net. Verratti doubled the tally with a fine curled shot into the far side of the goal on 32 minutes. Quagliarella scored his first goal from the penalty spot after a Nicolas Hasler handball, and his second after Kaufmann also used his arm and was shown a straight red card. Christian Panucci was Italy's previous oldest goalscorer at 35 years 62 days. Kean, who had endured a frustrating first half, headed home the fifth on 70 minutes with second-half substitute Pavoletti adding the sixth on his international debut, tapping in after Benjamin Buechel had parried the 30-year-old's header into his path. Football: Thailand axe Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac after Asian Cup horror show in 4-1 loss to India ABU DHABI (AFP) - Thailand have fired coach Milovan Rajevac following a humiliating 4-1 thrashing by India in their opening Asian Cup football game at the weekend. The 65-year-old Serb, who took charge of Thailand in 2017, paid the price after the War Elephants conceded three second-half goals to slump to a shock defeat in Abu Dhabi on Sunday (Jan 6). Thai football chiefs took a dim view of their Group A flop and acted swiftly to remove Rajevac the morning after. "The result is not what is expected of the Thai national team and that our supporters deserve," Thailand's FA president Somyot Poompanmoung said. "Like all Thai football fans across the country, I am also disappointed with the result. But as president of the football association, I cannot stand still with this problem." Former assistant coach Sirisak Yodyardthai will assume control of the team when they face Bahrain on Jan 10 and hosts United Arab Emirates on Jan 14, Thai officials added. Rajevac, who has had spells in charge of Algeria and Qatar, famously steered Ghana to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup where they were beaten on penalties by Uruguay. But he was left shell-shocked by Thailand's horror show against underdogs India, whose veteran striker Sunil Chhetri scored twice, overtaking Lionel Messi's 65 international goals in the process. Lamenting his side's abject display, Rajevac admitted that India were worthy winners. "They were phenomenal - they ran more, were more aggressive and wanted it more," he said. "They absolutely deserved to win. But we underperformed, especially in the second half." Rajevic has been criticised for his defensive style but the Serb clearly felt otherwise after watching Thailand over-run by a hungry India side. "It's not always about technical ability and skill on the ball," he said. "We lacked power, strength and aggression. We need to put more pressure on the ball and show more passion." Thailand, appearing for the first time in the Finals since co-hosting the Asian Cup in 2007, have now won just one of 21 games at the continent's showcase competition. Zinchenko injury limits Guardiola's options for Cup semis LONDON • Pep Guardiola counted the misses and the costs of a comfortable 2-0 win over Cardiff that took Manchester City back to the top of the Premier League as he faced the prospect of an FA Cup semi-final without a fit left-back. City, still in the hunt to win four trophies this season, play Brighton at Wembley tomorrow, bidding to reach their second final of the campaign after their League Cup triumph in February. But they will be without left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko, who had more passes than the entire Cardiff team, 21-13, by the time he limped off with a hamstring injury in the 18th minute on Wednesday. And, with England man Fabian Delph also injured and Frenchman Benjamin Mendy yet to prove his match fitness, Guardiola admitted he has a problem, saying: "It doesn't look good for the next games. We don't have many options." Sergio Aguero is also a doubt, with the ace striker not risked against Cardiff with crucial games coming up, particularly the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Tottenham next Tuesday. At least City won an eighth straight league game, while being able to make seven changes as the league leadership changed hands for the 25th time this term with six games to go. But the manager would not be happy that his team missed a slew of chances despite a quick start with Kevin de Bruyne's sixth-minute blistering goal, which the midfielder confessed was intended as a cross. Guardiola said: "We have the feeling if we drop points, we will not be champions. "But people said it would be easy against Cardiff. The way we started, the focus on what we have to do. The goals we scored with the chances, we should have scored more, that's the regret." Leroy Sane struck shortly before the break, driving a low shot into the far corner after Gabriel Jesus chested a cross into his path. But the Brazilian was guilty of missing a string of chances, including after just 34 seconds, when he slid in but failed to turn de Bruyne's cross into an open net. That the scoreline stayed respectable despite City's 27 shots was largely due to Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, who made a series of fine saves. Manager Neil Warnock, who is trying to save Cardiff from joining relegated Huddersfield and Fulham, said: "They started like Real Madrid of 10 years ago, everybody is so quick and confident on the ball, with their movement. I've not seen anything like it." AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, THE TIMES, LONDON Blessed Girl T-Shirts. Blessed Girl T-Shirts are all about fun, faith and most importantly the love of Jesus! Football: Japan's Maya Yoshida warns young teammates - pressure comes with the territory TOKYO (REUTERS) - Japan captain Maya Yoshida warned his young teammates that they will need to handle the pressure that comes with being Asian Cup favourites as the four-time winners prepare to open their campaign against Turkmenistan on Wednesday (Jan 9). The Samurai Blue are the most successful side in the tournament's history with four titles and are among the favourites in the United Arab Emirates, alongside South Korea and Iran. Southampton defender Yoshida, who was a member of the squad that won Japan's last Asian Cup title in 2011, said that the pressure to succeed comes with the territory. "There's always a strong expectation that we'll win in Asia. There's a lot of pressure, but it's something you have to deal with in order to win," Yoshida said on Tuesday as he looked ahead to the Turkmenistan clash. "If you can't handle that pressure, you won't make it into the World Cup (squad), or to World Cup qualifying." Coach Hajime Moriyasu, who is undefeated in his first five games in charge, has named a young and inexperienced squad including 12 players with 10 or fewer caps for the tournament where they are in Group F alongside Turkmenistan, Oman and Uzbekistan. Yoshida wants his young teammates to take advantage of the opportunity in the UAE to cement themselves in the Japan side. "You can't take on the world by yourself," he added. "To take the next step as a Japan player, you have to overcome that." Hazard's Chelsea future in doubt, Real move mooted LONDON • Eden Hazard's future at Chelsea seems to be in severe doubt after the forward admitted that he has come to a decision about his next step, with a move to Real Madrid thought to be his preference. "I know what I am going to do. I have made a decision," Hazard told French radio station RMC, although he did not elaborate. The interview was recorded two months ago as part of a documentary about his career, but it was only released earlier this week and may colour the context of the guessing games that have continued to follow his every move. Uncertainty over the 28-year-old's plans has been an unwelcome undercurrent to Chelsea's season. Hazard has admitted to being torn between staying at Stamford Bridge and the "dream" switch to Real, a club he referred to in October as "the best in the world". While Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has pressed the Belgium international to make up his mind, saying in December it was "time to decide" the issue, he has also accepted his star player could leave if that was his wish. "If he wants to go, he has to go," the Italian said last week. The situation is particularly concerning given that Hazard's contract expires in June 2020 and he is yet to entertain new terms. If the European champions and Hazard are both open to a deal, then Chelsea are unlikely to stand in his way, although it could take a nine-figure bid to seal his exit. According to the Evening Standard, the Blues will demand more than £100 million (S$175.3 million) before sanctioning his departure, although Real could include Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic, who is on loan at Stamford Bridge, to sweeten the deal. Should the blockbuster move take place in the summer, Chelsea will need a big-name replacement, but that player is unlikely to be Barcelona's Philippe Coutinho. Despite rumours of a return to English football circling the Brazil forward, who has struggled to nail down a starting place in Spain since moving from Liverpool for £142 million last January, Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has put the speculation to bed. He said: "Are we going to consider the sale of Coutinho? No. It's not (possible), he is very young (26) and we expect a lot from him. "He plays differently, he knows how we play, we do not want to sell." THE GUARDIAN Eden Hazard transfer: Will Real Madrid move for Chelsea star?
