LONDON (REUTERS) - Midfielder David Brooks continued his fine run of form with a superb brace to earn Bournemouth a 2-0 home win over 10-man Brighton & Hove Albion in a lively Premier League clash on Saturday (Dec 22).
Brooks fired Bournemouth ahead with a rasping shot from 20 metres in the 21st minute and, after Brighton had defender Lewis Dunk sent off in the second half, the 21-year old Welshman sealed the home side's win with a fine looping header.
Bournemouth, who celebrated only their second league win in the last eight matches, moved up to eighth on 26 points from 18 games while Brighton stayed 13th after suffering their third successive defeat.
Brooks, who joined the Cherries from Championship side Sheffield United during the close season after making his debut for Wales in November 2017, was praised by manager Eddie Howe after taking his league tally to five goals.
"Two great goals from David, both totally different but he showed his quality in both moments," Howe told the BBC.
"We've been pleasantly surprised, we knew we were getting a very technical and intelligent player. We liked him a lot from watching him at Sheffield United.
"He really buys into the team ethic and has a tactical understanding of how the team plays, and an ability to handle the Premier League and not get carried away with his early-season success."
Brighton had made a bright start and twice came close through Yves Bissouma, with Bournemouth keeper Asmir Begovic denying the Mali midfielder before he clawed out a stinging low shot by Jurgen Locadia.
Bournemouth took the lead when Brooks side-stepped his marker and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the bottom left corner of the net with visiting goalkeeper Matt Ryan clutching thin air.
Begovic kept out a Dunk header in the 44th minute and shortly after the centre back was dismissed for a second bookable foul Brooks was on target again in the 77th when he twisted in mid-air to head home Ryan Fraser's cross.

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri said he could not understand what happened after Manchester City crushed his side 6-0 on Sunday (Feb 10) - their biggest ever defeat in the Premier League.
City scored four times inside 25 minutes and added two more goals in the second half to overtake Liverpool on goal difference at the top of the table.
The result was Chelsea's heaviest defeat in any competition since losing 7-0 to Nottingham Forest in 1991.
"At the moment I am not able to explain," Sarri, whose side slipped to sixth in the table, below Arsenal on goal difference after the defeat, told Sky Sports.
"During the week my feeling was good during training. Maybe the goal we conceded after three minutes it was difficult to play. It was difficult not to give them spaces. We were in trouble. I am not able to understand.
"We made a lot of mistakes against the wrong opponents. They played fantastic football and we made a lot of mistakes. We wanted to press them at the beginning of the action but the plan was completely ruined because we conceded after three minutes.
"I think the big difference between the two teams was the intensity of pressing. They pressed really well and we were not able to do it. We were not able to react in the right way. We were not able to stay in the match."

The Italian said his side had a problem away from home and added it was right he should shoulder responsibility for the performance.
"At the moment we have a big problem away," he said. "The beginning of the season we were better away than at home. But everything has changed in the last month. We need to understand.
"It is right. I am in charge of the team so it is right (that he faces pressure). You will have to ask the club (if there will be discussions about his future)."

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for the home side at the Etihad but Palace hit back with goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Andros Townsend followed by a Luka Milivojevic penalty.
Substitute Kevin De Bruyne gave City late hope but it was not enough and they remain four points behind leaders Liverpool after their first home defeat of the season.
"We started quite decent and created chances," Guardiola told the BBC. "We scored a fantastic goal and after they passed the halfway line they scored.
"The third goal... we cannot concede the penalty we conceded. We have to try and avoid it. Football is like this. Three shots on goal and three goals.
"It's complicated but we fight until the last second. We are in December and we will try and recover and try and win games again."
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson put his side's victory down to hard work.

"You don't produce that sort of performance by waving a magic wand or having a five-minute team talk - there's a lot of work that goes into that structure and we were excellent," he told the BBC.
"We are playing against a team with enormous skill levels and their focus, their ability to sustain attacks, is an example to us all."
He described Townsend's goal as "magnificent".
"I wouldn't say I thought he was going to score but he gave himself a chance. It will be a contender for goal of the week, if not goal of the year."

LONDON â€¢ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted Manchester United "got away with it" after West Ham, 2-1 losers to a pair of Paul Pogba penalties, were on the end of a series of questionable officiating decisions.
United remained outside the Premier League top four ahead of tomorrow's Champions League clash with Barcelona, who left Lionel Messi at home amid 10 changes in a 0-0 draw at bottom side Huesca with the Spanish title nearly in the bag.
Since Solskjaer was appointed permanently last month, they have struggled to find the form that fuelled an 11-match unbeaten run when he took over on an interim basis in December.
They saw off Watford, their only other success in six games since the remarkable comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16. But they lost successive matches to Wolverhampton and Barcelona, 1-0, in the quarter-final first leg at home without a shot on target.
Worryingly, at Old Trafford on Saturday, they also had less possession (45 per cent) and fewer shots (two versus four) than the Hammers in a laboured display.
"We got away with it. Sometimes you get more than you deserve and today is one of them," said Solskjaer. "Watford was one of them. We were lucky it wasn't Barcelona, but West Ham played well."
They could have been one down early. Replays suggested Felipe Anderson had a goal wrongly chalked off for offside, with Diogo Dalot playing him on before Pogba gave United the lead.
That 19th-minute goal came from a penalty whose award was also questionable, as Juan Mata may have gone down outside the box and Robert Snodgrass' challenge on him may have been fair.
After Felipe Anderson equalised on 49 minutes, United's winner came via Pogba's second penalty 10 minutes from time, following the Frenchman's pass to Anthony Martial, who was then tripped.
West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini suggested Marcus Rashford got a touch on the pass and was offside doing so but replays showed this was not the case.
"A few mistakes but the decisions went for United. Unfortunately for us there were some decisions, very difficult, so I am not complaining about the referee. With VAR, I am sure we would win the game 1-0."
"Felipe Anderson was onside. It was not a penalty from Robert."
Solskjaer said that United would have no chance if they were as flat at Barcelona, who have won 27 of their last 30 Champions League home matches and drawn three. They have never lost to the English side at their Nou Camp ground in Europe's top club competition but the Norwegian is not giving up.
"We know it is going to be a very difficult game but we beat PSG," he said. "It will be a greater achievement if we can manage it against Barcelona. We will go there, why not have a go but we have to be better defensively."
Barca have 74 points with six games left, even as their lead was cut to nine points after Atletico Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0.
At Huesca, goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was the only starter at United who remained, as a trio made their LaLiga debuts.
Messi, whose nose was bloodied after being struck in the face by Chris Smalling, did not travel. Ivan Rakitic and Sergio Busquets were also rested while Gerard Pique and Luis Suarez were suspended.
Coach Ernesto Valverde was "happy in general with the game, though we could have been more ambitious in attack".
Arturo Vidal was happy to admit that their minds were more focused on going beyond the last eight in Europe for the first time since 2015.
"The Champions League is what everyone is dreaming about," said the midfielder.

Football: Belgian forward Eden Hazard joins Real Madrid

MADRID (AFP) - Eden Hazard completed his long-awaited move from Chelsea to Real Madrid on Friday (June 7) and could become the Spanish club's most expensive signing in their history.
Real said Hazard, 28, had signed a five-year contract.
His contract at the Premier League club was due to expire next year but the Blues drove a hard bargain for the forward, who will reportedly cost Madrid an initial â‚¬100 million (S$154 million), with another 45 million in potential add-ons.
The full amount would trump the â‚¬101 million Madrid paid Tottenham for Gareth Bale and the â‚¬91 million they spent to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United.
An unveiling at the Santiago Bernabeu is expected next week, once Hazard returns from international duty with Belgium, who play Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kazakhstan on Saturday and Scotland on Tuesday.
It means Madrid's spending spree is picking up pace following the arrivals of defender Eder Militao and striker Luka Jovic from Porto and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively.
But Hazard is the gem Zinedine Zidane can build his new team around and brings the kind of stardust Madrid fans have craved ever since the sale of Ronaldo to Juventus last summer.
Ronaldo's departure created a void up front that Madrid failed to fill last season, the team struggling for goals en route to finishing 19 points behind Barcelona in La Liga and crashing out to Ajax in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Hazard, who scored 110 goals in seven seasons at Chelsea, will be expected to help plug the gap has long-been admired by Zidane and Madrid president Florentino Perez.
"We have wanted to sign Hazard for several years and I hope he will come this year," Perez told Spanish radio station Onda Cero last month.
Less clear is where Hazard will fit into Zidane's starting line-up. Assuming he plays in his favoured position on the left of a front three, it would mean displacing the 18-year-old Brazilian, Vinicius Junior, who enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough year last season.
Chelsea said the club had tried to persuade Hazard to stay.
"Although it is with sadness we say goodbye to Eden - and we made it absolutely clear to him the club wished him to stay - we respect the decision he has made to take on a new challenge in a different country and follow his childhood dream of playing for Real Madrid," Chelsea club director Marina Granovskaia said in a statement.

BALE DOUBT

Hazard's arrival also adds more uncertainty around the future of Gareth Bale, who has played both on the left and right of the attacking trio in recent months but is clearly not part of Zidane's plans.
Madrid want to sell Bale to raise money for more signings, with French left-back Ferland Mendy the next player expected to arrive, from Lyon.
But the Wales international will not be forced out and has so far shown no interest in the handful of clubs that have shown interest. Neither Bale nor his agent Jonathan Barnett have spoken to the club since the end of the season.
Hazard though would do well to match Bale's record in Madrid as he looks to add to the trophies he won at Chelsea, which included two Premier League and two Europa League titles, as well as one FA Cup and one League Cup.
At the end of the 2014-15 season, in which Chelsea won the league, Hazard was awarded both the PFA Players' Player of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season. He was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year four times, in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017.
If Madrid pay the full amount, Chelsea stand to make a profit of more than â‚¬100 million, having signed Hazard for close to â‚¬40 million from Lille in 2012.
Chelsea had just won the Champions League when Hazard chose them over several other clubs but they have failed to replicate the success in the competition. After reaching the semi-finals in 2014, Chelsea have not gone past the last 16 in the last five seasons.

LONDON â€¢ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted he is still the right manager to deliver success at Manchester United despite last Sunday's shambolic 4-0 English Premier League defeat at Everton.

"I don't like losing, but it's a challenge when you go through bad results. This is the way we're gonna do it and plan ahead."
Midfielder Paul Pogba had told Sky Sports that the way United played at Goodison Park was "disrespectful" to themselves, the club and the fans and that the team are looking to give everything on the pitch today.
However, City are on a 10-match winning streak in the league and Solskjaer has warned his men to expect an aggressive battle.
"We got to be ready for their pressing so we've got to defend well, got to be ready for aggression, they will snap at your heels and kick you," the 46-year-old said.
"There will be fouls, absolutely no doubt about it and, when you watch those games, they commit so many players forward.

From the combative Roy Keane to the glamorous David Beckham and the trickery of George Best, Manchester United's heroes have all come with standout traits.
But breaking the mould is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the modest Norwegian who is doing wonders at Old Trafford in an unflashy manner, without donning a cape nor being a force of personality, according to former teammate Dwight Yorke.
"Ole's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet in football. He doesn't give you any drama, he just gets on with his job, he's totally professional in what he does," the 47-year-old ex-Trinidad and Tobago international striker said yesterday in reply to The Straits Times' question on whether Solskjaer's managerial brilliance was evident during his playing days.
"I just didn't see him at this level.
"Like everything else, you need a little luck and fortune and he got that. You got to grasp these opportunities. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him."
Yorke was speaking on the sidelines at the launch of this year's International Champions Cup (ICC) Singapore at the Incubator, near the Padang.
On July 20, the Red Devils will take on Inter Milan and a day later, Juventus will meet Tottenham Hotspur.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United are the first team to advance in the Champions League knockout rounds after losing the first leg at home by two goals.

British media has reported that Solskjaer is set for a permanent deal at Old Trafford this week and Yorke certainly believes the former striker is the right man to take United forward.
He said: "He has done a remarkable job, there is no question about that. The doubters who think that he wasn't capable of doing a job can pretty much eat their words now.
"May he continue to take the team forward. He's looking good, he's got the players playing with the passion and desire that we expect of a Man United player. That will be the case going forward."
Since Solskjaer took over on Dec 19 after Jose Mourinho's sacking, not only had he restored the team's competitive edge and playing style, he had also done so while smashing records.
He had won 14 out of 19 games, became the first United manager to win his first eight matches, surpassing Matt Busby's five, won a club record of nine consecutive away games and, by dumping Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League last 16, they became the first team in the tournament's history to advance after losing the first leg at home by two goals or more.
The key to the Red Devils' surge in form has been the caretaker's perceptive man-management skills, said Yorke.
He added: "I always think we have exceptional young players but these young players were not given the licence to express themselves, and expression is a word you associate a lot with Man United.
"When you just look at the talent that we have, nothing has changed.
"Our attackers (Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial) are as good as any other in the Premier League.
"It's about expressing themselves and exposing their talent. They have managed to do that under Ole."
Come July 20, Singapore fans will get the chance to watch the Red Devils express themselves, and fittingly, hear the classic chant "ole, ole" reverberate in the National Stadium.

AMSTERDAM â€¢ After years of languishing in the wilderness, it is fair to say Dutch football is enjoying something of a renaissance, with Ajax, the country's most successful club, at the heart of its revival.
The Netherlands' failure to qualify for two successive major tournaments in Euro 2016 and last summer's World Cup in Russia led many to call for the country's famed system of talent production to be overhauled.
However, when Ronald Koeman took over the hot seat as national coach in February last year, he was not overawed by the task at hand, but insisted that he saw "a bright future".
The critics and pundits could not see it at that time, but the former Dutch international knew there was a crop of budding players coming through at Ajax and patience was required to harness their talents.
Time, of course, is a commodity that is short in modern football.
But with Ajax's Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt developing at an "unprecedented" rate, something the club's coach Erik ten Hag has acknowledged, the Dutch have maintained an upward curve under Koeman.
They have lost just two games out of 10 played, and have also qualified for the semi-finals of the Nations League.
Their progress has also paid dividends in Europe, with Ajax in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2003.
De Jong and de Ligt are not the only Dutch players starring for club and country, with Virgil van Dijk marshalling the backline of Premier League leaders Liverpool with aplomb, having conceded the least number of goals this term.
Speaking to Fifa.com ahead of today's Euro 2020 qualifier against Belarus, Koeman admitted there was "a really positive feeling in the country again".
He said: "Big things will be expected of us in the qualifiers and that reflects the results and performances we've had.
"I always believed I could help improve things. He (de Jong) is simply an important player for this Oranje (team), but there are also other young boys who have shown that they have added value in a short time, think of de Ligt.
"Van Dijk, my captain, has been really important to us, and so have the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Kevin Strootman.
"It's up to us to make sure we're back at a major tournament."

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal to hand Juventus their first trophy of the season with a 1-0 win over ten-man AC Milan in the Italian Super Cup on Wednesday (Jan 16) in Saudi Arabia.
Ronaldo - signed by the Italian giants last year from Real Madrid as they target a first Champions League title since 1996 - headed in a 61st-minute winner.
AC Milan played the last quarter of an hour a man down after Ivorian midfielder Franck Kessie saw red for a bad tackle on Emre Can.
"I have my first title with Juventus so I'm happy," said the Portuguese star who now has 28 trophies including five Champions League and league titles from England and Spain, and a European Championship with Portugal.
"I really wanted this, to get off to a good start in 2019.
"This is only the start, we'll take it one step at a time. We've got this cup, now we must keep working hard to achieve the next trophy," warned Ronaldo.
The match had been overshadowed by controversy with calls for it to be relocated over human rights issues in Saudi Arabia with women only allowed to attend the game if they were accompanied by a man.
Italian football league president Gaetano Micciche hailed the match as a success, with reports there were up to 15,000 women among the 62,000 crowd in the stadium.
"It was a wonderful evening, a festival of sport in a full stadium," said Micciche.
"I hope that it's the starting point for social evolution in this country." On the pitch the players suffered in the heat with temperatures hitting 25 degrees Celsius amid freezing conditions in northern Italy.
In the end Juventus came away with a record eighth Super Cup title, one more than AC Milan who have won seven.
"It was very hot and the important thing was to win," said coach Massimiliano Allegri who won the trophy for the second time, having lost to AC Milan in 2016 and Lazio last year.
"Ronaldo? We always say the same thing... that's why we signed him. He is decisive and scores big goals, but the whole team put in a good performance."
AC Milan forward Gonzalo Higuain only played the final 20 minutes against his parent club, ahead of a touted move to Chelsea, having moved away from Turin to make way for Ronaldo last summer.
Coach Gennaro Gattuso said the Argentine was suffering from a fever and missed the team photo because they were afraid he would infect other players.
"It might seem like a joke, but it's true. Higuain wasn't in the picture when the Saudi Prince came to visit because I was afraid the virus would spread among the other players, so that was my decision.
"He had a fever last night, we did everything to get him better, but he didn't play much, so I preferred a fresher player."
Milan's best shot on goal was a Patrick Cutrone effort after the break with their hopes dwindling after Kessie's sending off.
"We had to climb a mountain and we tried," said Gattuso.

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos demanded respect for current coach Santiago Solari as he batted away questions on Friday (Dec 21) about whether Jose Mourinho could re-join the club in the future after being sacked by Manchester United.
Mourinho, who was sacked by United on Tuesday, spent three eventful years with Real between 2010 and 2013, winning the La Liga title with a record 100 points, scoring 121 goals, as well as lifting the Copa del Rey.
Yet his tenure also deeply divided the club's supporters and players, and Ramos was among the most outspoken of the Portuguese coach's critics.
Yet with Real still reeling from Zinedine Zidane's departure, having sacked his replacement Julen Lopetegui in October and then appointing the inexperienced Solari, some Spanish media reports have said president Florentino Perez could be tempted to bring Mourinho back.
"Mourinho left us five years ago yet everyone keeps talking about him. People need to show more respect to the coach we have now," Ramos told a news conference ahead of the Fifa Club World Cup final against Al Ain on Saturday.
"I'm not the person who decides which coach comes here or doesn't, some people seem to think that the captains decide which coach Real Madrid appoints."
Victory over local side Al Ain in the Club World Cup final in Abu Dhabi would hand former Real midfielder Solari his first trophy as coach and see the club overtake Barcelona as the most successful team in the competition's history with four triumphs.

Although Solari has led Real to 10 wins in 12 games since succeeding Lopetegui, the team have still faced plenty of criticism for some insipid recent performances.
They have fallen five points behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race but Ramos believes winning a trophy would offer the team an emotional boost.
"No one can doubt the record of any one of us and we have another chance to defend the Club World Cup title," Ramos added.
"No one has ever done this (win it four times), we are looking forward to the final with hope and we want to go home with the prize. It would be great for us on an emotional level to come back with the trophy."

LONDON â€¢ Relatives of missing Premier League player Emiliano Sala on Saturday began a privately funded search for his plane, which disappeared over the English Channel, after local coast guard called off their own rescue mission.
The news was announced by an online fundraising campaign for the operation, and confirmed to Agence France-Presse by Maria Jose Sottini, a friend of the Argentinian striker's family.
"The appeal launched late Friday afternoon enabled Emiliano Sala's relatives, via a specialised organisation, to resume research in the Channel early this Saturday morning," said a statement on the GoFundMe website.
"Two boats are leading the operations."
Around 4,000 people have so far contributed to the campaign, which was organised by Sala's agency, Sport Cover, raising almost â‚¬321,343 (S$496,167).
The target of â‚¬300,000 was reached within a day.
According to the BBC, fellow footballers including Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain's Adrien Rabiot and Corentin Tolisso of Bayern Munich have donated to the fund, as did Sala's former manager at Nantes, Vahid Halilhodzic.
A light aircraft transporting Sala, who signed for Cardiff City two Saturdays ago, vanished from the radar around 20km north of the Channel island of Guernsey last Monday night.
The 28-year-old, who moved from French Ligue 1 club Nantes for a club-record fee of Â£15 million (S$26.7 million), had been flying to the Welsh capital for his first training session after saying goodbye to his former teammates.
Rescue workers formally called off the search for the missing plane on Thursday.
As investigators probe what happened, it emerged that while his football agent Willie McKay had arranged for the ill-fated flight, he did not choose the Piper Malibu plane or its pilot, who has since been named as David Ibbotson.
"We had no involvement in selecting a plane or a pilot and wish to make clear we do not own the plane that Emiliano flew on," the Briton said in a statement.

Saints came into the contest having picked up four points in their last two Premier League away games, and found themselves in front after 11 minutes through James Ward-Prowse's penalty.
Their task was seemingly made more difficult when Yan Valery was sent off for a second yellow card just before halftime but Shane Long squeezed the ball home to double Southampton's advantage just before the break.
Leicester committed more bodies forward in the second period and soon got themselves back in the match through Wilfred Ndidi's scrappy goal in the 58th minute.
No team has given up more points from leading positions than Southampton this season, but they dug in and held out for another three crucial points.
The win moves Southampton up to 16th while Leicester followed up their humiliating FA Cup defeat by League Two side Newport County with a loss that sees them drop to eighth.
Despite beating Chelsea and Manchester City over the festive period, Leicester fans continued to voice their disapproval of manager Claude Puel, with signs held aloft demanding that he be sacked which the Frenchman said did not affect him.
"It's not my concern (fan protests), no comment," Puel said.
"I'm just focused and concentrating on my team.
"I want to work with these players. It's football. The fans are like us - disappointed and frustrated."
LEICESTER BOOS
That 2-1 defeat at fourth-tier Newport County in the FA Cup third round last weekend intensified the pressure on Puel and the boos rang out when Nampalys Mendy brought Long down in the penalty area, leaving Ward-Prowse to convert the spot kick.
Jan Bednarek then did brilliantly to clear the ball off the line before his fellow defender Valery earned a second yellow card for pulling down Marc Albrighton.
Long, though, raced clear down the left before sneaking the ball under Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to score only his third goal in his last 63 appearances for Southampton.
Puel made two changes at the break and it seemed to rejuvenate the hosts, with Ndidi getting Leicester back in the contest after being picked out by Ricardo Pereira.
The hosts created several openings against the 10 men, with Jamie Vardy heading their best chance wide, as the boos again came booming down from the stands at the final whistle.
"To be manager of this team, it's a fantastic job," Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuettl said.
"Today they showed their quality. To go 2-0 in the lead at Leicester is not easy and we defended with fantastic commitment."

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri is already planning for next season after insisting he expects to remain in charge at Chelsea despite his troubled debut campaign.
Sarri was reportedly on the brink of being sacked after Chelsea suffered humiliating Premier League defeats at Bournemouth and Manchester City and then crashed out of the FA Cup against Manchester United.

However, Sarri isn't worried about the speculation over his future, preferring to look ahead to next term in the belief he will remain in charge at Stamford Bridge.
"It's not a big problem. The problem is the results. All the rest is not important at this moment," Sarri told reporters when asked about his job prospects on Wednesday (March 6).
"I want to win for the team, for the club, not for me. It's not important.
"I'm confident. I was confident in the past, and I am confident now of course.
"We were talking about the problem of the next pre-season. So we were trying to organise in the best way the next pre-season.
"But I want to think only to our performances and our results. Nothing else.
"It's not important if I'm here next season."

In the midst of a hectic schedule that includes a home game against Wolves on Sunday, Sarri is considering taking a risk by resting some of his stars for the Kiev game.
And he echoed the concerns of Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino about English clubs being at a disadvantage in European competitions due to punishing schedules.
"I think the Premier League could do something more for the teams involved in European competitions," he said.
"If you play in the Europa League in Italy, after the match away you can ask to play on Monday.
"One day more to rest. I think that's really very important.
"For example, when we will play in the Premier League after 62 or 63 hours after the match against Dynamo Kiev. I think it's too early."
Winning the Europa League would guarantee Chelsea return to the Champions League next season, but Sarri is still hopeful of qualifying for the tournament with a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The Blues sit sixth in the English top flight, two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, with a game in hand.
"I think we can gain the spot in the Champions League in the Premier League," Sarri added.
"We are fighting. We are only two points away, at the moment, and have to play one match in hand.
"But the Europa League is a very important competition, the second in Europe, an important trophy with a spot for the Champions League. It's a very important target for us."

LONDON â€¢ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Manchester United were the architects of their "own downfall" after they were beaten by Wolves for the second time in three weeks.
Tuesday's 2-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux in which Ashley Young was sent off for two bookable offences means United have little margin for error if they are to finish in the top four.
Scott McTominay gave the away side an early lead - his first for the club - but Diogo Jota equalised after a mistake by Fred before Chris Smalling scored an own goal to inflict Solskjaer's first defeat since he was appointed on a full-time basis.
While the Norwegian had no complaints about referee Mike Dean's decision to send off Young just before the hour mark, he was frustrated that his players failed to convert more of their chances.
He said: "A very good start, we should have been three up. It was a very good performance until they scored the second goal.
"But for their goalkeeper, we should have won. That's football for you and that's why it's the game we all love, it's not like maths."
Asked whether the wobble - United have picked up three points out of a possible nine - means things are "resetting" at Old Trafford after an excellent initial impact, Solskjaer claimed he could not "control the result".

He added: "We don't look at it as that. We can control what we do on the pitch performance-wise, and we've played well enough tonight.
"So I don't think there is any kickback. I was very pleased with the chances and the intent."
The result means the Red Devils remain fifth, and two points behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand.
They still need to face league champions Manchester City and Chelsea at home, while Luke Shaw will be suspended for their next two games after collecting his 10th yellow card of the campaign.
However, Solskjaer insisted he was still "confident" and that "it is going to be difficult for anybody who plays against us".
The 46-year-old, who revealed he had an eye on the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona next Wednesday, added: "Now we need 15 (points) from the last six (matches), so we don't have room for many more losses.
"It is a difficult run, but then we are a very good team as well.
"We will use one or two days to analyse and recover, and then we will prepare for Barcelona, which will be a fantastic challenge."
Separately, Fulham became the second club to be relegated after a 4-1 loss at Watford on Tuesday.
