Football: Manchester City owners team with robot-makers to buy Chinese club

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Manchester City's owners City Football Group (CFG) announced the purchase of Chinese third-tier club Sichuan Jiuniu on Wednesday (Feb 20) - in partnership with a Chinese investment fund and a company that makes robots.
The rare swoop for a Chinese team, after Sheffield United bought Chengdu Five Bulls in 2006, expands CFG's portfolio to seven clubs and follows the rapid growth of Chinese football in recent years.
Few details were revealed about the deal, which partners Abu Dhabi-owned CFG with China Sports Capital and UBTECH, a Chinese artificial intelligence and humanoid robotic company.
Investment fund China Sports Capital was jointly established by Sequoia China and Chinese state-linked CMC, which bought a 13 per cent stake in CFG in 2015.
CFG also owns New York City and Melbourne City football clubs, but chief executive Ferran Soriano said it had been a long-held "dream" to become part of China's growing football scene.
"We want to be part of the initiative... even just a small part," he told a press conference in Chengdu.
"We will be patient. We are here for the long-term."
CFG is also the owner of Club Atletico Torque in Uruguay, and has stakes in Spanish LaLiga outfit Girona FC and Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan's J-League.
Sichuan Jiuniu, its latest addition, are based in the western Chinese metropolis of Chengdu, and play their home games at the Chengdu Longquanyi Football Stadium.
Chinese football was buoyed by an influx of funds and foreign stars after President Xi Jinping, who visited Manchester City in 2015, outlined ambitions to turn the world's most populous nation into a global football power.

Football: Singapore to play Solomon Islands and Myanmar in friendlies, new national coach soon to be unveiled

SINGAPORE - After a seven-month wait, the Lions will play at the National Stadium again, and also welcome a new ringmaster.
The Straits Times understands that the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) will unveil Tatsuma Yoshida as the new national coach this week, after announcing on Monday (May 27) two international friendlies against Solomon Islands on June 8 and Myanmar on June 11.
The national coach position has been vacant since Fandi Ahmad's interim stint ended following Singapore's group-stage elimination at the AFF Suzuki Cup in November 2018. The Lions last played at the Sports Hub in a 6-1 group-stage win over Timor-Leste in that tournament. Former international Nazri Nasir led the team as caretaker in their international friendlies in March 2019.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "The upcoming international window is a vital period for the national team to gather for centralised training and friendly matches, especially for the overseas players.
"The two friendlies will help the team build momentum from the positive performances in the last international window. In addition, these matches will also aid the team in their preparations for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers which will be played later this year."
The Lions acquitted themselves well in their last two friendlies at the Airmarine Cup in Malaysia, where they beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before a penalty shootout defeat in March.
Yazeen added: "We made a deliberate attempt to schedule the June matches at the Home of the Lions in order for our fans to be able to support and rally the Lions at our very own National Stadium.
"We are also thankful to have the support of our venue partner, Singapore Sports Hub, who made it possible for the friendlies to be played at the Home of the Lions."

While world No. 139 Solomon Islands and Myanmar (140th) are hardly glamour teams, they represent decent opponents Singapore (160th) have a realistic chance to get a positive result against.
A win or a draw would add Fifa ranking points as the Lions bid to squeeze into the top 32 Asian teams - they are currently 33rd - and move up from the fifth pot into the fourth pot, for a potentially more favourable World Cup qualifiers draw in July.
National skipper Hariss Harun said: "We want to carry on the momentum from our previous friendlies and go for the wins in these two games.
"The new coach will have his own ideas and the faster the players can adapt, the better it will be for the national team, and we are looking forward to working with him."
In February, ST had revealed Yoshida as the frontrunner for the national coach position. The Chiba native was a central midfielder and started his playing career with hometown club Kashiwa Reysol before turning out for Kyoto Sanga and Montedio Yamagata.
In 2002, he signed for Jurong FC and played under former Singapore coach V. Sundram Moorthy, then player-coach for the Cobras.
After hanging up his boots that year, Yoshida returned to Reysol, where he rose through the ranks from youth-team coach to technical director and then the head coach.
Although he lasted just one season each as head coach of Reysol (2015) and Albirex Niigata (2016), and was also sacked by Ventforet Kofu last year, it was his youth development work that impressed FAS as he helped produce some Japan internationals such as Marseille right-back Hiroki Sakai.

Football: Zidane praise for Man United's Pogba opens door to Real bid

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane opened the door to a possible bid for Paul Pogba on Saturday (March 30) when he hailed the Manchester United star as "a player who knows how to do everything".
The French World Cup winner has thrived under new United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but has made no secret of his admiration for Real.
"It's one of the biggest clubs in the world. I've always said Real Madrid is a dream club for every player," the midfielder said last week.
Zidane is a self-confessed Pogba fan, the Real boss telling a press conference: "I really like the player, that's nothing new.
"I know him personally... He's a really different player, somebody who brings something few others can to the pitch.
"He's capable of doing everything. There are midfielders who know how to defend really well, others who are very good in attack. He knows how to do everything."
Zidane, who returned as Real manager after replacing Santiago Solari, added: "One day, if he has the chance to do something else after Manchester United, he's always said that Madrid was a club that interested him a lot."

Pogba, 26, moved from Juventus to United for €105 million in 2016 with his contract terminating in 2021.
Spanish media suggest Real will go on a massive recruitment drive this summer with a war chest of up to €500 million (S$760 million).

Short and sweet as Long records fastest goal in Premier League

LONDON • Southampton striker Shane Long scored the fastest goal in Premier League history, netting after just 7.69 seconds of his side's 1-1 Premier League draw at Watford on Tuesday.
The Ireland international's opener came immediately after the kick-off when he blocked a clearance from Watford defender Craig Cathcart before dinking a cool finish over goalkeeper Ben Foster.
The 32-year-old's effort at Vicarage Road surpassed the previous fastest league goal, scored in 9.82 seconds by then Tottenham defender Ledley King against Bradford in December 2000.
While it was only Long's fourth strike of the season, three of those have come in his last four appearances and his hot form has been a fillip for Ralph Hasenhuttl's team.
The Saints are now six points clear of 18th-placed Cardiff with just three league games remaining.
However, they were left to rue their missed opportunities to all but mathematically seal safety after twice striking the woodwork through Nathan Redmond and Ryan Bertrand.
Expressing his surprise at his feat, Long told Sky Sports: "It's a record, is it?
"Straight from the kick-off, we wanted to put them under pressure, 99 times out of a hundred, you block it and it doesn't work, but this time, it did."

  • 7.69sec

His joy was tempered by Andre Gray's added-time equaliser, which saw his teammates fall to the pitch in despair. He added: "It's nice to have a record like that, but it would have been nicer if it was the winning goal."
King was in the stands at Spurs' 1-0 home win over Brighton the same night and he later acknowledged the achievement, tweeting: "Just wanted to congratulate Shane Long on breaking the fastest goal in Premier League history record after 19 years.
"That's gonna take some beating, well done."

Pressure dangerous for Hudson-Odoi's progress: Sarri

Pressure dangerous for Hudson-Odoi's progress: Sarri

LONDON • Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri needs no convincing about Callum Hudson-Odoi's immense potential, but is reluctant to put too much pressure on the teenager as it could prove "dangerous" for his development.
The winger, who emerged as a transfer target for German giants Bayern Munich in January, came off the bench to score a late goal in Chelsea's 3-0 win over Dynamo Kiev in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 clash on Thursday.
Supporters at Stamford Bridge were chanting for him to be brought on before the 18-year-old, who has not been able to break into the first team this season, was introduced with 12 minutes to go.
"He doesn't have to do anything to convince me. He's a very great player. In my opinion, a player at 18 years old cannot be at the top. He needs to improve until he's 22 or 23," Sarri told a news conference after the match, in which Pedro and Willian also scored.
"To have pressure when you're 18 is dangerous. You can lose (sight of) the target. When you're 18, the target is to improve tactically, mentally and physically. I don't like to speak about him for this reason.
"Now he needs to improve without the pressure of the media, the fans and the club, but he is in my mind for every match."
The win put Chelsea in a strong position to reach the quarter-finals of Europe's second-tier club competition, but Sarri warned his players against complacency ahead of the return leg in Kiev next Thursday.
"Now we have to be careful. We have to go there with a good level of application and determination if we want to qualify," he added.
"If you concede a goal, you can go mentally in trouble. We have to go there with the right level of attention."
In the Premier League, while top-four rivals Arsenal and Manchester United square off at the Emirates tomorrow, the Blues will host Wolves - while also having a home match (their game in hand) against Brighton to be fitted in at some point.
Sarri believes that the next two matches will be crucial for Chelsea to get ahead in the tough battle for the Champions League spots.
"I think that we have two big opportunities - this match and then when we will play the match against Brighton," he said.
"But I think we will be fighting for the top four until the last minute of the last match. Every match will be important in our future."

Football: Arsenal must improve away form for top-four finish, says Emery

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal can finish in the Premier League's top four but must pick up more points from away games by fixing their leaky defence and improving their mentality, manager Unai Emery said on Thursday (Feb 7).
Sixth-placed Arsenal, three points off a Champions League spot, have not won in six away league games since a 2-1 victory at Bournemouth in November.
They have, however, racked up six consecutive home wins to stay in touch with the leaders.
"We're strong at home but I think we need to do better away. We started very well, changing our mentality to get more points away," Emery told reporters ahead of Saturday's trip to bottom side Huddersfield Town.
"My first critic is myself. We can make the top four, but we know it's not easy. For us away, each match is a new challenge but it is a big possibility to take the three points."
Arsenal are the only Premier League team yet to keep a clean sheet in an away game this season and Emery has experimented with different combinations at the back.
"We know defensively we need to do better. We tried to play with three and two centre-backs," he added.
"(We need to) be passionate, be calm but above all work."
Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi and attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan are back in full training after injuries and the latter could return to the side after a seven-week absence.
"After six weeks being injured, we thought he (Mkhitaryan) was not fit enough to play against Manchester City. But this week it's the first time I can think of him with us," Emery said.

Football: Bayern miss chance to seal title after Leipzig stumble

BERLIN (REUTERS) - Champions Bayern Munich stumbled to a goalless draw at RB Leipzig on Saturday (May 11), missing their chance to seal the Bundesliga title as Borussia Dortmund kept their hopes alive and closed to within two points with one game left.
Bayern, who needed a win to make sure of a record-extending seventh consecutive league title, are on 75 points and will now face a final day examination against Eintracht Frankfurt next week.
Dortmund, who beat Fortuna Duesseldorf 3-2, are on 73 and face Borussia Moenchengladbach next week.
Leipzig are third on 66 and have secured their Champions League spot for next season.
“We want to win this thing next week,” said Bayern’s Thomas Mueller. “We have battled back from nine points behind (late last year). We are very greedy.” The Bavarians missed several good chances with Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski failing to hit the target and also had a Leon Goretzka effort in the second half ruled out after video review.
They face Leipzig again in the German Cup final on May 25.
It was an even more nervous affair at Dortmund, where goals from Christian Pulisic, Thomas Delaney and Mario Gotze eventually sealed a win for the title contenders.
The hosts suffered with a blunder from keeper Marwin Hitz that allowed Duesseldorf back into the game at 1-1 before the hosts then had to sweat it out after a Duesseldorf goal in stoppage time reduced the deficit to 3-2.
Hitz, replacing injured Roman Buerki, also brought down Dodi Lukebakio for a second-half penalty which the forward fired wide.
Hanover 96 and Nuremberg were relegated while VfB Stuttgart beat VfL Wolfsburg 3-0 to hold on to 16th place and will go into a relegation/promotion playoff with the second division’s third-placed team.

Football: Pochettino's positivity propels pursuit of progress

LONDON • In his biography, Brave New World, Mauricio Pochettino explains his belief in a concept called "energia universal" - the idea that people, places and things are charged with a hidden energy, positive or negative.
It is remarkable how quickly the energy, and the conversation, around Tottenham has changed.
Alongside their resurrection in the Champions League, they have won five Premier League games in a row, scored 11 goals in their past two games, and overtaken Manchester City. Only Liverpool, the league leaders, are pervaded by as much positive energy.
Only three months ago, they lost three matches in a row - to Watford, Liverpool and Inter Milan.
Two months ago they lost to City to sit fifth in the league, and their European hopes were in tatters after a home defeat by Barcelona and a draw at PSV Eindhoven.
As the turn of the year approaches, their fortunes could hardly look more different.
Spurs were not expected to be title contenders, especially after a summer with no new signings. But after 41/2 seasons, Pochettino's side have been through the sort of highs and lows that galvanise a squad and build belief.

His core of players has matured, with Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen in their prime at 25 and 26 respectively, and Dele Alli entering his at 22.
The nagging impression persists that there are elements of Tottenham's armoury that have contributed to success: Kane's finishing; the chemistry between Kane, Alli, Eriksen and Son Heung-min; Pochettino's powers of positivity.
Another source of optimism is the fixture calendar: Tottenham have by far the easiest schedule of the three title contenders over the next few weeks.
Five of their next seven league games are at home and they do not face another top-four team until Chelsea on Feb 27. Liverpool and champions City, meanwhile, play each other on Thursday.
If Tottenham are going to win the title, the next couple of months are probably their best chance to reel in Liverpool and consolidate their lead over City.
There is, of course, another factor: Pochettino's future. It has been under scrutiny since Jose Mourinho was fired as Manchester United manager and the Argentinian emerged as United's No. 1 target.
The Times reported last week that Pochettino is interested in being considered for the United job but, if he is wavering, the past few matches can only have muddied his decision further.
It is possible that Tottenham's players are not only playing for the Premier League title but also to persuade their manager that he is capable of achieving everything he wants at Spurs - another underlying source of positive energy.
Tottenham, in second place, are now title contenders, six points behind Liverpool before today's home game against Wolves.
But Pochettino, as positive as he is, insisted that it is still premature to talk about winning the title.
"We are there because we have the belief, because we are working hard and of course we have the quality," he said.
"It is hard to be in the position that we are in. Still we are a question mark. We will see if we are capable to be consistent like we are in the first half. Then we can talk that we can fight for big things.
"The gap is six points. It's still halfway to play. Everything can happen."

Gwinn gets Germany's vital goal

PARIS • Midfielder Giulia Gwinn scored the only goal yesterday as Germany opened their Women's World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over China in Group B.
On a sunny but breezy early summer's day perfect for football, in front of a noisy crowd of 15,283 in Rennes, Germany - twice winners of this competition - dominated possession and territory.
Yet, in a game of slick passing mixed with robust challenges, they twice survived narrow escapes.
The 19-year-old Gwinn fired in from the edge of the box in the 66th minute to break stiff Chinese resistance and seal the victory.
But China had almost stunned the favourites against the run of play in the first half when Yang Li was sent through after a German error, but her shot was cleared when she looked certain to score.
Carolin Simon hit the woodwork with a cross minutes later, but Germany's early dominance faded as the Chinese gained in confidence.
China then earned another golden chance from a quick break, hitting the post in the 44th minute before Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult came to the rescue.
With the win, Germany are now unbeaten in their last 13 matches, the longest run of any team taking part in the tournament in France.
"That was hard work. We started well but the goal didn't come. We were more stable after the break and we got the reward for our efforts in the end," said Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.
In Friday's opener, France coach Corinne Diacre said her side had taken their first step towards Cup success but warned they must stay grounded after they started with a 4-0 victory over South Korea.
Les Bleues were rarely troubled by a limited side and took only nine minutes for forward Eugenie Le Sommer to fire the ball into the roof of the net from close range.
Wendie Renard doubled the tally with a downward header in the 35th minute, and the towering defender added another with her head on the stroke of half-time.
France's intensity dropped after the break until five minutes from the final whistle, when captain Amandine Henry curled a superb shot into the far corner.
"We worked a lot, they suffered a lot during the preparation period. We won tonight but it's just the first step," Diacre told a news conference at the Parc des Princes.
"We need six more (steps) to reach our goal, we must keep our feet on the ground, keep working.
"We started well and we made it easy for ourselves. It was important to score a second goal before the break, and we did even better."

Football: Man United draw Barcelona in quarter-finals of Champions League

Football: Man United draw Barcelona in quarter-finals of Champions League

PARIS (AFP) - Manchester United will face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals while Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur clash in an all-Premier League tie following Friday's (March 15) draw in Nyon, Switzerland.
Liverpool were drawn to play Porto in the knockout rounds for the second year in succession as Ajax's reward for eliminating the holders Real Madrid is a two-legged tie against Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo.
English hopes are high that this could be their year in Europe's elite club competition after all four of their representatives made it through to the last eight.
However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United will have their work cut out if they are to go any further as they take Lionel Messi's Barcelona in the headline tie.
For Solskjaer, the second leg will bring back memories of the 1999 final, when the Norwegian came off the bench to score a stoppage-time winner for United against Bayern Munich at Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium.
With City and United not allowed to play their home leg in the same week, United will entertain the leaders of LaLiga at Old Trafford on April 9 or 10, with the return a week later.
The last time the Premier League had four teams in the quarter-finals, in 2008/09, Barcelona beat the Old Trafford side 2-0 in the final in Rome.
The clubs clashed again in the final at Wembley in 2011, with Barca winning 3-1 on that occasion.
Uefa also drew the semi-finals on Friday, meaning the winners of the Barcelona v United will face either Liverpool or Porto in the last four.
Jurgen Klopp's side, fresh from knocking out Bayern Munich in the last 16, will be confident of beating the Portuguese champions after defeating them 5-0 on aggregate in the last 16 on their way to the final last season.
Liverpool will host two-time European Cup winners Porto at Anfield in the first leg before heading to the Estadio do Dragao in the return on April 16 or 17.
There is guaranteed to be one English team in the semi-finals after Tottenham and City were paired together, with the first leg to be played in London.
With Pep Guardiola's team top of the Premier League, 13 points ahead of Spurs in third, City will be the favourites to advance to their first semi-final since 2016. City have also won their last three meetings with Mauricio Pochettino's team.
The draw means there will be three clashes between the sides in 10 days - they are also due to meet in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium on April 20.
The winners of that tie will host either Ajax or Juventus in the first leg of the semi-finals.
The latter tie is a repeat of the 1996 final, which the Italian club won on penalties against an Ajax team who had won the trophy the previous year.
Juventus have lost five finals since then but are hoping Ronaldo can fire them to glory this season after his hat-trick knocked out Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
That result ended Atletico's dreams of reaching the final, which will be played at their Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Saturday, June 1.
Quarter-final draw:
Ajax Amsterdam v Juventus
Liverpool v Porto
Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City
Barcelona v Manchester United
Semi-finals: Tottenham/Man City v Ajax/Juventus
Man United/Barcelona v Liverpool/Porto
First leg April 30/May 1, second leg May 7-8 .

Football: Relegation ends Notts County's 131-year stay in Football League

LONDON (AFP) - Notts County's 131-year stay in the Football League is over after a 3-1 defeat at Swindon condemned the oldest club in England's top four divisions to relegation on Saturday (May 4).
County needed to win and hope relegation rivals Macclesfield lost to Cambridge to stand any chance of staying up.
Kane Hemmings gave County hope in the 53rd minute when he slammed home a penalty after Craig Mackail-Smith had been fouled in the area by Tom Broadbent.
But Kaiyne Woolery's equaliser and a brace from Theo Robinson helped Swindon send County crashing out of League Two into the National League.
Formed in 1862, County's mantle as the oldest Football League club now passes across the River Trent to Nottingham Forest, who were founded in 1865.
Some claim Stoke are the oldest league club, but even City's own website admits "many details remain sketchy" about their formation, purported to be in 1863.
While County have rarely enjoyed sustained success in their long history, they are famous for providing current Italian champions Juventus with the colours for their iconic black and white striped kit.
In 1903, County answered the call of a Juventus player, an Englishman named John Savage, to send a set of the club's black and white striped shirts to replace the old pink ones worn by the players of the Italian side since their foundation six years earlier.
Juve never forgot the gesture and remembered their roots when it came to the inaugural game in their new stadium in September 2011, with County provided the opposition in the Juventus Arena.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Spaniard Gerard Deulofeu bagged a hat-trick as Watford hammered lowly Cardiff City 5-1 on Friday (Feb 22) to move up to seventh place in the Premier League.
Deulofeu put Javi Gracia's side ahead in the 18th minute after a mistake from Cardiff defender Bruno Manga but it was after the break when Watford ran away with the game.
Deulofeu made it 2-0 with a clinical finish after a swift break in the 61st minute and the former Barcelona and Everton winger completed his hat-trick after more poor defending from Neil Warnock's side.
Deulofeu then turned creator, teeing up Troy Deeney for a simple tap-in as Watford romped into a four-goal advantage.
Cardiff, who are 17th and could fall back into the bottom three after this weekend's games, pulled a goal back through defender Sol Bamba but Watford added further punishment with Deeney's second in stoppage time.

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino said on Tuesday (April 2) that Hugo Lloris will remain in goal for Tottenham despite a series of costly errors this season.
Lloris has endured fresh criticism after his fumble led to Toby Alderweireld's decisive own goal in the final minutes of Tottenham's 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.
It is not the first time this term the Tottenham captain has made a mistake that ended up haunting his team.
But Spurs boss Pochettino has always backed the France World Cup winner, even in the wake of a drink-driving charge earlier in the campaign.
Pochettino confirmed Lloris would be in goal for Tottenham's first game in their new stadium against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
"He is my captain. He's one of the best keepers in the world. There's no doubt," Pochettino said.
"There's no doubt that Hugo is one of the best and he's going to be in the goal.
"It's a situation that is so painful because I think we deserved more (at Liverpool), but in that kind of situation, which happens in football, it's only to be strong and back our player.
"I think Hugo is going to be, like always, great for us. He was great for us.
"He was so important in all that process in five years, and for sure he's going to be one of the most important players for the future of the club too."
Tottenham's return home to their 62,062-seater stadium could not have come at a better time as they look for a morale boost after a wretched run.
They have taken just one point from their past five Premier League games, which has seen them not only drop out of the title race but also put their top-four place in serious peril.
There were signs of promise in the cruel loss to Liverpool and Pochettino is sure that their new home will be graced by Champions League football next term.

TOP-FOUR FIGHT

"Of course, the best stadium in the world must have the Champions League," he said.
"It would be a shame to not be in the next Champions League.
"But we are going to fight. We are in the top four, disappointed with the last result but of course it's not the same.
"Against Liverpool we deserved more, played really well second half, the feeling was so good. Playing like this I have no doubts we are going to be in the top four and playing in the Champions League next season.
"It's in our hands. It's a mini-league and playing five games in our new stadium will be a big boost for our players and fans. It's up to us to achieve that."
Tottenham, who have been playing at Wembley for the past two years, have had a painstaking wait following frustrating delays to the stadium's opening this season, which have postponed their moving-in date from August 2018.
But Pochettino is ready for a special day in the club's history.
"It's going to be very special, at last the new stadium is a reality," he said. "Now it's so close, just over 24 hours until we play in our new home.
"It's an exciting moment in the history of the club. Everyone will realise the magnitude of the project."

Football: Kepa Arrizabalaga has full respect for Maurizio Sarri after 'misunderstanding'

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga insisted he has full respect for manager Maurizio Sarri after refusing to be replaced in the final stages of his side's League Cup final loss to Manchester City on penalties.
Sarri was visibly furious when Arrizabalaga refused to leave the field after needing treatment, but the Italian coach later claimed his anger was the result of a "misunderstanding".
"At no time has it been my intention to disobey the coach or any of his decisions," Kepa wrote in a statement issued on his Twitter feed.
"I think everything has been misunderstood in the heat of the final part of the match for a title.
"The coach thought I was not in a position to play and my intention was to express that I was in good condition to continue helping the team, while the docs that had treated me arrived at the bench to give the message.
"I feel the image that has been portrayed was not my intention. I have full respect for the coach and his authority."
Arrizabalaga saved Leroy Sane's penalty in the shoot-out, but could have done better with Sergio Aguero's effort that slipped under his body as City retained the trophy 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw.
Sarri repeatedly gestured at Arrizabalaga to come off, then began to storm down the tunnel in rage before returning to the touchline for the final minutes of extra-time and penalties.

However, speaking after the match, Sarri backtracked as he suggested it was a communication issue that caused the problem.
"In that situation there was a big misunderstanding," Sarri said.
"I understood there was a problem and we needed a change. I didn't find out until the doctor arrived to the bench after a few minutes.
"It was a big misunderstanding. I understood the goalkeeper had cramp and for me he was unable to go to penalties but the problem was not cramp so he was able to go to penalties."
The controversy casts a further cloud on Sarri's future with reports prior to the match suggesting he could be sacked if Chelsea failed to beat the English champions.
"If I was in the dressing room I would expect the manager to come in and deal with it straight away," said former Chelsea captain John Terry in his role as a TV pundit.
There have been several reports that Chelsea's players have lost faith with his methods and Arrizabalaga's behaviour only added to that perception.
The Blues are languishing in sixth in the Premier League, but did put in a far more spirited display than the one that saw them thrashed 6-0 by City just two weeks ago.
"After this match I have to say that I'm sure (I have the backing of the players) because they played exactly how I asked today and I am proud of my players," insisted Sarri.
"We showed to everyone we could become a very solid team. Against Manchester City is not easy so I am really very happy with my players, proud of my players."

Tricky tie, but City can fend off Wolves

Tricky tie, but City can fend off Wolves

LONDON • Pep Guardiola's revitalised Manchester City face a potentially tricky challenge at home to Wolves today (tomorrow morning Singapore time) as they attempt to cut the deficit to Premier League leaders Liverpool to four points.
However, City have shown enough just two weeks into the new year to suggest that their uncharacteristic collapse in form last month is firmly behind them.
The English champions' slump was triggered after Chelsea ended their unbeaten streak in the league and they subsequently lost successive league games, against relatively modest opposition in both Crystal Palace and Leicester.
But a victory over the Reds to kick off the second half of the term has completely rejuvenated the mood at the Etihad Stadium.
Since then, two Cup routs in the space of four days - albeit against lower league clubs Rotherham and Burton - have indicated the return of the clinical edge that characterised their play during last season's record-breaking campaign.
It was a mood reflected by Kevin de Bruyne, who has been injured for most of the first half of their campaign, against Rotherham when he showed visible dissatisfaction at being brought off after an hour, even though City were already leading by five goals.
While media reports have hinted at his anger, with de Bruyne reportedly refusing to return to the bench to watch the remainder of their FA Cup third-round 7-0 win, instead opting to head straight down the tunnel, Guardiola refused to address the speculation, claiming he "did not speak with him" over the Belgium forward's reaction.
Despite his petulance, de Bruyne remains in line to start just his second league game of the term when City take on Wolves.
Sergio Aguero and captain Vincent Kompany, who have not played since the Liverpool match, look set to return to the first XI, and Guardiola confirmed his team had a clean bill of health as "the rest (except for Benjamin Mendy) are fit".
The Spaniard also felt City could maintain their chase for honours on four fronts even though they are unlikely to reinforce by dipping into the January transfer market.
He said: "Sometimes, we have done it but, normally, when you want to buy one player, it is for the next five or six years and, normally, it doesn't happen in this window.
"The big clubs don't buy important players for six months. If you don't have injuries and are satisfied with the squad, you go with them."
Despite declaring his happiness with his players, he warned that Wolves would be no pushovers and they had no margin for error.
Recalling how Nuno Espirito Santo's men held City to a creditable 1-1 league draw earlier in the season at Molineux, he added: "They are strong physically, (at) counter-attack, set-pieces. They defend well, deep, they control many areas (through Joao) Moutinho.
"(Ruben) Neves, he can shoot from a long way. They are newly promoted and doing incredibly well."
