Football: Rangers out of Europa League, Eintracht fans run riot at Lazio

PARIS (AFP) - Rangers crashed out of the Europa League on Thursday (Dec 13) after falling 1-0 at Rapid Vienna, while crowd trouble sparked by Eintracht Frankfurt fans marred the German side's win at Lazio.
Steven Gerrard's Rangers, who had to win in Vienna in their final group game in order to qualify for the last 32, finish third in Group G, two points behind Rapid thanks to Dejan Ljubicic's 84th-minute winner, which sees the Austrians through to the knockout stages, level on 10 points with group winners Villarreal.
The Spaniards ensured top spot by beating bottom club Spartak Moscow 2-0 thanks to goals from Samuel Chukwueze and Karl Toko Ekambi.
Rangers came close to breaking the deadlock in the 21st minute of a match with few shots and little incident when Connor Goldson thudded a header against the bar, but Ljubicic rolled home the winner late on to seal Rangers' fate.
"We were good for 80 minutes and I couldn't ask the players to do anymore," said Gerrard.
"It is very hard for me to criticise the players for what they gave me tonight. The reality is at this level we fell a bit short."
Five Eintracht Frankfurt fans had been arrested in clashes with police in Rome ahead of their dead-rubber Group H match against Lazio as nearly 9,000 Germans swamped the Stadio Olimpico.
Eintracht had already comfortably taken top spot in the group thanks to winning all five of their previous games, while Lazio were also in the last 32 regardless of the result of the match, won 2-1 by the away side as they came back from a goal down thanks to second-half strikes from Mijat Gacinovic and Sebastien Haller.
However, German fans charged the pitch after Joaquin Correa's 56th-minute opener, and subsequently threw smoke bombs and flares at both Lazio fans and the police.
Last year's runners-up Marseille finished bottom of that group after losing 3-1 at home to Apollon Limassol and ending the group stage with just a single point.

GIROUD RESCUES POINT FOR CHELSEA

Chelsea, who had already won Group L, looked to be on their way to a perfect sixth win from six when Willian crashed home a free-kick on the half-hour mark at Vidi, but Ethan Ampadu's own goal just two minutes later gifted the hosts an equaliser.
Vidi then took the lead in the 56th minute after a blistering break, Georgi Milanov charging down the left and picking out Loic Nego, who brilliantly volleyed in the second.
However, substitute Olivier Giroud snatched a point for the Blues with a another free-kick, which the Frenchman curled off the underside of the bar to maintain his side's unbeaten group record.
"We made a lot of mistakes from the tactical point of view," said Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri.
"I am happy with the character and reaction from the second goal. From the tactical point of view we made a lot of mistakes."
BATE Borisov qualified alongside Chelsea after winning 3-1 at rock-bottom PAOK.
Malmo are in the knockout stages after snatching a 1-0 win at Besiktas that saw the Swedes leapfrog their Turkish hosts in the extremely tight Group I.
All four teams in the group were in contention for qualification on Thursday, but Genk managed to hold on to first place after hammering Sarpsborg 4-0.
Sevilla took top spot in Group J from Krasnodar thanks to a 3-0 win, while Rennes pipped Astana to the knockout rounds with a 2-0 win.

Football: Noh Rahman embracing learning curve as Home United interim coach

SINGAPORE - Former national football stalwart Noh Rahman got his Singapore Premier League (SPL) coaching career off to the best possible start on Wednesday (April 24), after he guided Home United to a polished 3-0 win over Geylang International.
But the 38-year-old, who took over the reins of the Protectors on an interim basis from Saswadimata Dasuki last Friday, said he hasn't had much time to bask in the maiden victory.
With a wry smile, Noh told The Straits Times on Friday (April 26): "Being a player and a coach are two very different things. As a player, you just have to focus on what you eat, how you train, and to give your best in games.
"As a coach, the minute one game ends, you're already thinking about the next game."
Noh is expecting a tougher challenge on Saturday against 2018 champions Albirex Niigata at the Jurong East Stadium.
The Japanese team went undefeated last term en route to a third straight league championship, but a new league rule has meant that for this term, Albirex have to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two starting and playing the entire first half.
Albirex are smarting after a 4-2 defeat by Hougang United on Wednesday - their second loss of the season - and are currently fourth in the SPL after seven games with 11 points, one ahead of Home.
Said Noh: "It's a 5.30pm kickoff, on a hard (artificial) ground, and it could be hot. We are expecting a tough game."

During a 20-year playing career which he called time on at the end of 2016, Noh earned 79 international caps as well as a reputation as being one of the most professional local footballers.
Widely respected by his peers, he won two S.League (SPL's predecessor) titles (2001, 2002), two Singapore Cups (2012, 2013) and two AFF Suzuki Cups (2004, 2007).
The former defender told ST that one of the first things he did after being appointed Home's interim coach, was to consult a group of six senior players.
"It was quite a lengthy meeting where we shared quite a lot of things, and I appreciate the players being honest," said the rookie coach.
Veteran fullback Juma'at Jantan, 35, was one of the players involved in the meeting.
Said Juma'at: "In football, one of the most important things is communication. If we have that, things will fall in place.
"Noh is a no-nonsense type on and off the field, and the players - even myself now - look up to him. And he is open (to feedback) as well, so I think he is the best choice to lead the team for now."
Juma'at is one of four players in the current Home squad - the others are Izzdin Shafiq, Abdil Qaiyyim and South Korean midfielder Song Ui-Yong - who were teammates with Noh when he played for the Protectors from 2013 to 2015.
When asked if he felt weird coaching players he once shared a pitch and changing room with, Noh said: "Yes, a little bit!
"But these players are great, they know where the line between a coach and the players is. And I appreciate the fact they understand their roles in the team well."
Protectors youngster Adam Swandi recalled that Noh was one of the established senior national players when he received his first Lions call-up in 2013.
The 23-year-old, who scored against Geylang on Wednesday, said: "Coach Noh has a lot of experience, and he is a role model for players like me.
"He has so much to offer our team and Singapore football, and I think him being in charge of the team now is a good thing."
Noh said he has been told by the club it would appoint the new head coach within six weeks, and is looking forward to returning his role at the start of the season, which he said was "to assist and learn".
"I'm not shy in saying I feel I am not ready for a head coach job like this," said Noh. "But it's a challenge I am ready to take on."

Hazard leads tributes for departing Fabregas
LONDON • Chelsea forward Eden Hazard has paid tribute to Cesc Fabregas, saying that he was "lucky" to have played with the Spaniard ahead of the midfielder's move to French Ligue 1 side Monaco.
Fabregas shared an emotional moment with the Stamford Bridge faithful after Saturday's 2-0 FA Cup third-round win over Nottingham Forest, applauding all sides of the crowd while he was also in tears.
The 31-year-old, who joined Chelsea in 2014, will reunite with former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry, who is now the Monaco coach.
"In five years, I can say that I was lucky to play with him," Hazard said.
"Since the beginning when he came, we saw with the first year we won the double together.
"Top guy on the pitch, off the pitch, a great friend of mine.

  • Major trophies Cesc Fabregas won as a Chelsea player.

"Just admiration about this guy. I hope he will have a good future. It's a bit hard now, but he's still very good and he will enjoy."
When asked what Fabregas had given Chelsea, Hazard added: "Everything."
Fabregas moved to the Blues from Barcelona two years after Hazard arrived from Lille. The duo have won two Premier League titles, one League Cup and one FA Cup during their time together.
Chelsea assistant coach Carlo Cudicini also hailed Fabregas as "one of a kind".
"What can I say about Cesc? He is a player who is unique, he has an unbelievable awareness and vision of where his teammates are on the pitch," the former goalkeeper said.
"I think he is one of the few who have the ability to give balls behind the defensive line that are so precise.
"He is a one-of-a-kind player. He has been fantastic for the teams he played for before us and the contribution he has given this club and to this team has been amazing. Cesc is a top, top player."
Cudicini added that Alvaro Morata's two goals in the win over Nottingham Forest would "free his mind" after a lean spell for the Spanish striker.
Morata struck twice in the second half, his first goals in domestic competition for two months.
"It was very important for him to score two goals which can only be good for his confidence. Hopefully, it will be good for his morale that he scored and, hopefully, he will be more free in his mind," Cudicini said.
"For a striker, it's difficult when you go through a spell when you don't score many goals, so his body language was a bit down but, in training, he's working very hard.
"We all knew that sooner or later, he would be able to turn the corner and start scoring goals."

Football: Tampines Rovers sneak past Yangon United 4-3 to top AFC Cup Group F

SINGAPORE - Tampines Rovers needed a three-goal salvo in the dying minutes in their last AFC Cup Group F match against Cambodia's Nagaworld FC to secure a 4-2 victory.
On Wednesday night (May 1), the Singapore Premier League side endured another "crazy" AFC Cup game as they lost the lead twice but still ended up beating Yangon United 4-3 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Stags striker Khairul Amri missed a host of chances but went home with the match ball after notching a hat-trick in the second, 43rd and 77th minute.
But even his hat-trick was not enough to seal the win as Yangon capitalised on sloppy defending to come back from 2-0 and 3-2 down in an end-to-end second half with goals from Soe Min Naing (58th), Maung Maung Lwin (71st) and Kyaw Zin Oo (85th).
The visitors, clearly fired up by a sizeable Myanmarese contingent among the 1,827 fans, could have even snuck ahead in the 87th minute, but Tampines goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari did well to deny Kosuke Yamazaki.
That allowed Tampines full-back Irwan Shah to steal the show and three points in the 91st minute as he latched onto Madhu Mohana's flick-on to lash past Wai Lin Aung for his fourth goal of the season.
With four wins and a draw, Tampines lead Group F with 13 points and need a draw at Ha Noi on May 15 to be sure of making the Asean Zonal semi-finals.
They may also qualify as the best runners-up from the three Asean groups, but Tampines coach Kadir Yahaya wants his team to improve on their defending if they are to go far in the competition.
He said: "Like the last game against Nagaworld, after we scored the first goal, we dropped a gear.
"Maybe that was due to confidence, but we kept trying and had chances to kill off the game which we didn't make full use of.
"We entertained the fans but, from a coach's perspective, we made individual errors that we need to correct in order to go further.
"We have been conceding in the last five to 10 minutes, which is quite worrying. If we played a stronger team today, they would have killed us."
Amri also felt the need to improve at the other end, saying added: "It was a crazy game. i missed a lot of chances and let my team down and they had to fight until the final whistle.
"I'm happy to contribute three goals, but it was almost not enough and I should have scored four or five. We will need to be sharper in the upcoming games."

Football: Brunei DPMM coach hails team's 'big hearts' as they hold Albirex 0-0 to extend unbeaten run

SINGAPORE - Singapore Premier League (SPL) leaders Brunei DPMM extended their unbeaten start to the season to 11 games after they held defending champions Albirex Niigata to a goal-less draw on Friday night (May 24).
With most of his players observing the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, DPMM coach Adrian Pennock was happy with the point at the White Swans' Jurong East Stadium home.
"It's a great point," said the former Stoke City assistant manager.
"To come here, fasting or not, is always difficult and we had to dig in. We didn't come here to draw but the (fatigue) caught up with us a bit. Our players showed they had big hearts."
The match pitted the two most in-form players against each other in midfield.
Albirex had skipper Kyoga Nakamura, the SPL's best young player last month, while DPMM boasted Australian midfielder Blake Ricciuto, who won the goal and player of the month awards.
But Ricciuto was unable to assert himself on the game because he had his hands full in midfield combating the pass-and-move style of the Japanese side.

As a result, DPMM's Belarusian striker Andrey Varankow - the SPL's leading scorer with 14 goals from 10 games - cut an isolated figure up front.
Nakamura, however, was able to show glimpses of his quality, and was involved in two of the game's brightest moments.
In the 29th minute, the 23-year-old shimmied past two players, before letting rip a fierce shot from outside the box which was tipped over the bar by DPMM goalkeeper Wardun Yussof.
Then, just seconds into the second half, the former Japan Under-17 player intercepted a loose pass in midfield, bore down on goal, and then set up teammate Hiroyoshi Kamata with a golden opportunity.
But Kamata inexplicably slid the ball into the side netting after rounding Wardun.
Albirex stayed in third place on 18 points from 10 games, nine points behind DPMM, who have played one game more.
Albirex coach Keiji Shigetomi rued the missed opportunity, saying: "Our players worked very hard, but we dropped two points tonight. Our accuracy was not good enough, and we need to do better."

Thousands of families were relocated from the inner-city to new suburban housing estates, based on the belief that this would improve their standard of living, though this is largely subjective.

Football: Cardiff 'shocked' by report that pilot in crash that killed Sala not qualified for night flights

LONDON (AFP) - Cardiff claim they are stunned by a report that the pilot in the plane crash that killed Emiliano Sala was not qualified to fly at night.
The English Premier League football club said they remain "deeply concerned" that the pilot David Ibbotson and those who arranged the flight "seemingly completely disregarded the rules of flying and put Mr Sala's life in such danger".
Sala died when the Piper Malibu aircraft they were travelling in came down in the English Channel on Jan 21, two days after Cardiff had signed the Argentinian striker from French club Nantes.
The BBC on Saturday reported that Ibbotson was thought to have been colour-blind and that his licence restricted him to flying in daytime hours only.
Cardiff said in a statement: "Cardiff City is shocked to hear the pilot, David Ibbotson, may not have been permitted to fly at night.
"The club remains deeply concerned that the pilot, and those who arranged the flight, seemingly completely disregarded the rules of flying and put Mr Sala's life in such danger.
"We believe those who are responsible should be held fully accountable for their actions.

"We reiterate our support for the Air Charter Association's call for more awareness of and better enforcement against illegal flights."

Football: Wilson scores wonder volley as Bournemouth beat West Ham

BOURNEMOUTH, England (REUTERS) - Bournemouth's Callum Wilson smashed home a wonderful second-half volley and his strike partner Joshua King added a second to give their side a much-needed 2-0 home win over West Ham United in their Premier League clash on Saturday (Jan 19).
With Bournemouth desperate to secure their first league victory in almost a month, Artur Boruc started in goal ahead of Asmir Begovic while West Ham left unsettled striker Marko Arnautovic, who has been linked with a big-money move to China, out of their squad.
Both sides struggled to hit the target in the first half, but West Ham's Lukasz Fabianski made two superb saves early in the second and moments later striker Andy Carroll, in for Arnautovic, blazed over from close range as the game opened up.
Wilson gave the home side the lead with a thunderous volley in the 54th minute, catching the ball perfectly and leaving Fabianski rooted to the spot as it flew into the top right-hand corner for his 10th league goal of the season.
With West Ham attacking and Bournemouth content to play on the counter, Wilson almost got a second in the 71st minute but this time his first-time shot came off the foot of the far post and rolled to safety.
The visitors continued to leave space at the back as they desperately chased an equaliser, and King was able to slot the ball into an empty net after a superb counter-attack to secure all three points for Bournemouth.
"I think the big thing for us today was that we got the breaks - Carroll didn't take his chance and Callum scored a goal out of nothing really for us at the other end, and then we defended very well to win," Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe said.
West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini told reporters he was disappointed with the result and that he preferred not to talk about the absent Arnautovic.
"We don't need to talk about a player that was not in the squad. I never complain about players who are not here. We have nine players injured, let's talk about the ones here that we brought to play this game," he told reporters.
"We didn't win, Marko Arnautovic didn't play so we must have other players to step up."

Var-y 'cruel': Guardiola laments overrule of Raheem Sterling's goal

LONDON • There are great goals, lucky goals, own goals, winning goals and now, in the era of the video assistant referee (VAR), the "provisional goal".
No game highlighted the new normal more than Wednesday's extraordinary Champions League quarter-final second leg between Manchester City and Tottenham, which ended 4-3 on the night and Spurs progressing 4-4 on away goals.
Raheem Sterling thought he had the winner and his hat-trick in added time, with his manager Pep Guardiola punching the air maniacally and the Etihad Stadium erupting in delirium.
However, referee Cuneyt Cakir had other ideas, signalling the goal had been overruled after a video review and leaving Guardiola on his knees as their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple died.
"I watched the action and the people from above decided it (City's disallowed goal) was offside," said the Spaniard. "In the moment, we celebrated and we were so close to the semi-finals. It is cruel, but it is what it is and we have to accept it.
The Spurs players, who moments before looked utterly distraught, revelled in the knowledge that they, and not City, were going through.
Son Heung-min, their match-winner in the first leg and the hero on the night after twice capitalising on poor giveaways by City defender Aymeric Laporte in the first half, declared their progression to a last-four clash with Ajax as "madness".
The South Korea forward, who now has 11 goals in 11 games with England striker Harry Kane absent, said: "I have never seen something like this, it was a very tough game, a very crazy game.

FAIR DECISION
I didn't see the ball because I had other players in front of me, then the ball came to me on the hand... but I think it was a goal.
FERNANDO LLORENTE, Tottenham striker, saying that Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir was right to allow his controversial goal to stand.
RIGHT CALL
Replays clearly showed that Sergio Aguero was offside when the ball deflected off Bernardo Silva and into the striker's path.
MARK CLATTENBURG, former Premier League referee, on the officials making the right call to disallow Raheem Sterling's stoppage-time goal.

"Sometimes you are annoyed with VAR but, today, it is 'thank you and good decision'. We fought together for 90 minutes."
The crazy game started with a breathless 21 minutes, which went 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-2, before Kevin de Bruyne dished out his third assist to tee up Sergio Aguero to make it 4-2 just before the hour.
City thought they had reached only their second semi-final of Europe's elite competition, the first time since 2016 - only to be foiled by Fernando Llorente's "one of the best moments in my career".
The substitute's decisive goal 17 minutes from time was allowed to stand after a VAR review to check for a handball.
The Spain striker insisted Spurs could go all the way after reaching the European Cup semi-final for the first time since 1962.
He said: "To do this with an unbelievable team and be for the first time in the semi-finals of the Champions League with these teammates is crazy."
Despite the controversy over the ball brushing Llorente's arm before going in off his thigh, former Spurs great Glenn Hoddle said it was the correct decision. Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand disagreed; he felt Spurs had made their own luck.
Even Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, one of the more vociferous critics of VAR, accepted that on this occasion, his side had benefited from the technology.
Declaring "that is why we love football", the Argentinian said: "It was unbelievable, the way it finished. My players are heroes to be here. I'm so happy for them, for the fans. Today, we showed great character and great personality."
His players now have the opportunity to write themselves into folklore, with the first leg against Ajax on April 30 at their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where they are unbeaten in three games.
The clubs' first clash in the competition also holds a special meaning for defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.
The May 8 reverse fixture marks the first time the Belgian pair will return to Amsterdam since leaving Ajax in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

Albirex Niigata 0
Brunei DPMM 0
Singapore Premier League (SPL) leaders Brunei DPMM extended their unbeaten start to the season to 11 games after they held defending champions Albirex Niigata to a goal-less draw last night.
We didn't come here to draw, but the (fatigue) caught up with us a bit.
"Our players showed they had big hearts."
Last night's match pitted the two most in-form players against each other in midfield.
Albirex had skipper Kyoga Nakamura, the SPL's best young player last month, while DPMM boasted Australian midfielder Blake Ricciuto, who won the goal and player of the month awards.
But Ricciuto, 26, was unable to assert himself on the game because he had his hands full in midfield combating the pass-and-move style of the Japanese side.
As a result, DPMM's Belarusian striker Andrey Varankow, the league's leading scorer with 14 goals from 10 games, cut an isolated figure up front.
The 23-year-old Nakamura, however, was able to show glimpses of his quality and was involved in two of the game's brightest moments.
In the 29th minute, he shimmied past two men before letting rip a fierce shot from outside the box that DPMM goalkeeper Wardun Yussof tipped over the bar.
Then, just seconds into the second half, the former Japan Under-17 player intercepted a loose pass in midfield, bore down on goal and then set up Hiroyoshi Kamata with a golden opportunity.
But Kamata inexplicably slid the ball into the side netting after rounding Wardun.
Albirex stayed in third place on 18 points from 10 games, one point behind Hougang United - and nine behind DPMM, who have played one game more.
Albirex coach Keiji Shigetomi rued the missed opportunity, saying: "Our players worked very hard, but we dropped two points tonight.
"Our accuracy was not good enough, and we need to do better."

It's only pain: Reds' motto

It's only pain: Reds' motto

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has vowed Liverpool's injury-hit squad will fight to the last to land the club's first English Premier League title in 29 years tomorrow and will go to Wolves with the motto that defines their season: "It's only pain."
The Reds picked up several problems in securing a remarkable second successive Champions League final on Tuesday, with Andy Robertson and Jordan Henderson hurt in the 4-0 win against Barcelona.
But, with the EPL title at stake - they need to beat Wolves at home to capitalise on any slip by Manchester City at Brighton - Klopp revealed his walking wounded were determined to play on.
Only Roberto Firmino and Naby Keita are confirmed absentees, while Mohamed Salah, the league's top scorer on 22 goals, should be available after missing their Champions League semi-final triumph through concussion.
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, Klopp said: "The famous three words of this week in the dressing room. Very important for all the young lads to learn.
"Hendo said, 'It's only pain', Robbo said, 'It's only pain', but it was real pain. Wow. Robbo could deal with the pain but couldn't activate the muscle. They should be fine. Mo looked good around the celebrations... Today, he will join in training."
The German also felt such defiance had characterised their entire campaign and that his bond with the club's fans, one that underpinned incredible victory over the Spanish champions, would be non-existent without it.
He explained: "In Liverpool, it's mainly about the supporters and not me. If I want to love Liverpool fans, I have a bigger choice because there are so many. They have to deal with me and my character.

REDS' WAR CRY
The famous three words of this week in the dressing room. Very important for all the young lads to learn. Hendo said, 'It's only pain'.
JURGEN KLOPP , Liverpool manager, on his team's motto for the match against Wolves.

BLUES' WAR CRY
It's a privilege. We are in this position because we won a lot of games, 13 in a row, we have to win one more and that is what we have to do.
PEP GUARDIOLA, manager of Manchester City, on his team's target against Brighton.

"It's a proper fit, but it's about the performance. I could be the most funny guy in the world but, if the boys would not play good football, nobody would laugh at my jokes.
"It's all about the boys, always. They have to deliver. If they don't, no chance. The group of players we have here is so special. Since Tuesday, if I had to find a very short description for the group, I would say, 'It's only pain'. That's how they went through the season. It was always hard, always difficult, but it was only pain. So let's carry on."
Klopp also touched on the June 1 Champions League final with Tottenham as a meeting of the "two teams who showed the biggest heart in the whole competition", but was critical of the exorbitant prices fans were being charged and of Uefa's "irresponsible" choice of venues for the two European finals.
He added: "With Madrid, it's unbelievably expensive, but it's not another part of the world at least. Going to Baku (in Azerbaijan) for a Europa League final is really funny.
"The guys who make the decisions, I don't know what they have for breakfast.
"Baku, I don't even know how to go there or if there is any regular flight (from England). These decisions, they must be more sensible and reasonable."
However, destiny remains in the hands of Pep Guardiola's team, who will be the first to retain the title since Manchester United in 2009 with a win over Brighton.
While he admitted there were so many variables that could cause the title to swing towards the Reds, including "one mistake of our side, one incredible performance from the opponent, or one mistake from the referee", the Spaniard urged his team to "be more precise in all the aspects and try to win the game".
Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference yesterday: "It's a privilege. We are in this position because we won a lot of games, 13 in a row, we have to win one more and that is what we have to do."

Fandi rues missed chances in 1-1 draw

Fandi rues missed chances in 1-1 draw
It was encouraging that his team struck back immediately after falling behind, but Singapore's 1-1 draw with Hong Kong in the Asian Football Confederation Under-23 Championship qualifier yesterday still left a sour taste in coach Fandi Ahmad's mouth.
The national Under-22 side carved out chances but were not clinical enough to make them count in their opening Group G game at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
"We are quite disappointed with the result," Fandi, 56, lamented.
"I thought we could have won the game because we had more chances. We had good shots at goal, but the goalkeeper saved or we hit the post."
The Singaporeans dominated most of the game, creating a host of chances from their passing moves but were unable to find the net.
In the 29th minute, captain Joshua Pereira arrived at the far post to meet midfielder Hami Syahin's cross from the right, but he blasted over the bar.
Then in the 42nd minute, striker Ikhsan Fandi broke clear of the defence - only for the goalkeeper to deny him.
Against the run of play, Hong Kong defender Tsui Wang Kit scored in the 52nd minute.
But, within a minute, Fandi's men equalised through centre-back Lionel Tan, who netted from close range after fellow defender Irfan Fandi had headed on Hami's 53rd-minute free kick.
Hami also saw one of his crosses rebound off the post in the second half.
On the wasted opportunities, Fandi added: "In the first half alone, we created three chances. In terms of chances, we created more than them. They had one or two, but we had a mistake amongst our defenders and they scored a goal.
"But we kept going at them. It's a very, very tough game, trying to adapt to the situation here. We are still quite happy with a point, but we could have done better than this."
Singapore will meet North Korea, who defeated hosts Mongolia 1-0 in the other Group G game yesterday, in their second match tomorrow.
The 11 group winners and four best runners-up will qualify for the Finals in Thailand in January. The top-three finishers will qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Fandi concedes that he has little knowledge of the North Koreans, but he wants his players to go all out to get a result.
He said: "We don't know much about DPR Korea. They are very aggressive, very fit. What we can do is to watch them, but I hope we can find more videos of them.
"I know they have been training very hard for three weeks, that's what their coach said.
"We must be prepared; whatever comes, we have to face it. They are a very strong team.
"We are going into this game as underdogs but, hopefully, we can do better and get the three points."

Millwall goalkeeper David Martin fluffing a free kick from Brighton's Solly March in the fifth minute of stoppage time, which earned the English south coast side a 2-2 draw in their FA Cup quarter-final and forced extra time at the Den in London yesterday. The extra period failed to produce a winner as the Premier League club went on to win 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out. It was heartbreak for the Championship side, as they were leading 2-0 after 79 minutes before Brighton mounted their comeback. Brighton join fellow EPL teams Manchester City, Watford and Wolves in the semi-finals, which will take place at Wembley on April 6 and 7. The final is on May 18.

Football: Guardiola hopes Champions League pain spurs on Manchester City

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola wants the pain of Manchester City's gut-wrenching Champions League elimination at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur to inspire a charge for an unprecedented domestic treble.
Guardiola's side take on Spurs at the Etihad Stadium again on Saturday (April 20) after VAR ruled out what would have been a stoppage-time winner for City and denied them a place in the last four as they went out on away goals after having already celebrated victory.
Now City, who lifted the League Cup in February, will focus on trying to hold off Liverpool and retain their Premier League title in their final five league games, before taking on Watford in the FA Cup final.
"I don't want the players to forget what they lived through on Wednesday. It will take time, we have to live with that feeling," he said.
"More than 55,000 people happy then devastated in a second. There is not an activity in this world you can put in these limits."
While City now only have domestic matters to concentrate on, leaders Liverpool - who have played a game more - have a Champions League semi-final on the horizon.
But Guardiola was adamant City would gain no advantage from being absent from midweek European action for the remainder of the season.

"I would prefer to be in the semi-finals and the quadruple closer," he said.
"There is no advantage at this stage. In November and December, when you have more games, maybe.
"Like Liverpool went out of both cups early, we played nine or 10 more games. But now at this stage of the season, it isn't any influence on the rest."
Meanwhile former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager Guardiola believes his star-studded City side will be a better team for their Champions League exit.
We have to live with these situations, accept them. It will be on our minds but looking back it will help us to move forward," he added.
"A tough night but the day after we move forward. These players have the opportunity to show they can do that.
"They can get back what they deserve, this season or the next or three or four years. They will be in the same position and they'll be luckier and go to the next stages."

Football: Nine-man Spurs slump at Bournemouth; Cardiff relegated

LONDON (REUTERS) - The race to secure the final two Champions League qualification places from the Premier League looks likely to go to the final weekend after Tottenham Hotspur again slipped up, losing to a last-minute goal while having two men sent off at Bournemouth.
On an eventful final Saturday (May 4) of the season, Cardiff City's 3-2 defeat at home to Crystal Palace ensured they were relegated along with Huddersfield Town and Fulham, who lost 1-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, while West Ham United brushed aside Southampton 3-0.
A win for Spurs at the Vitality Stadium would have secured a top-four slot ahead of next week's Champions League semi-final second leg against Ajax Amsterdam.
But, after losing at home to West Ham United last week and then going down to the Dutch side in midweek, Mauricio Pochettino's side failed to fire again and went down 1-0 after Nathan Ake struck in injury time.
Son Heung-min was first to be sent off for pushing Jefferson Lerma just before halftime with Juan Foyth shown a straight red card for a studs-up tackle on Jack Simpson two minutes after coming on at the interval.
Spurs stay third on 70 points, four points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, who have two games remaining. But Pochettino's side know victory in their final game against Everton will see them qualify, with Chelsea and Manchester United also capable of securing a top-four slot.
"It is very painful to play with two players less than the opponent," Pochettino said.
"We need to move on. We cannot change the decisions. We have ahead two finals against Ajax and Everton. It is in our hands. If it does not happen we will be proud because nobody expected Tottenham to be in the position they are today.
"We are fighting (five) teams, it is impossible for all six to get the top four, whatever happens I will feel proud and whatever happens in the (Champions League) semi-final I will be proud."

Spurs also had to contest with a fine Premier League debut from 19-year-old goalkeeper Mark Travers, who was in inspired form for the hosts with a string of fine saves.
Cardiff never seriously looked like securing the win they needed to stand any chance of staying up, with Wilfried Zaha, Michy Batshuayi and Andros Townsend scoring the goals for Palace, who won for the fifth time in six away league games.
The result confirmed Cardiff's relegation after one season for the second time in five years. It was also manager Neil Warnock's third top-flight relegation after also going down with Notts County in 1992 and Sheffield United in 2007.
At Molineux, Leander Dendoncker's 75th-minute volley against Fulham moved Wolves a step closer to possible European football next season.
The Midlanders will be guaranteed to finish seventh in their first season after promotion if Leicester fail to beat Manchester City on Monday. Wolves would then need City to beat Watford in the FA Cup final to secure a place in Europe for the first time in 39 years.
The one bright spot for Fulham was Harvey Elliott, who became Premier League's youngest ever player at the age of 16 years and 30 days when he came on after 88 minutes.
Marko Arnautovic scored twice for West Ham - his first goals for four months - as the home side completed a routine 3-0 win over Southampton. Ryan Fredericks rounded off the scoring with his first-ever Premier League strike.
Liverpool went into Saturday's evening kickoff knowing they almost certainly needed to beat Newcastle United to stand any chance of pipping Manchester City to the title.

Ronaldo upbeat about erasing 2-0 deficit
TURIN • Cristiano Ronaldo has urged his teammates "to give a great response in our home" with Juventus' hopes of a first Champions League trophy since 1996 hanging by a thread.
The seven-time defending Italian champions trail 2-0 to Spanish side Atletico Madrid going into the second leg of their last-16 tie at the Allianz Stadium in Turin today.
The Portugal forward told Juventus TV: "We didn't expect to lose the first leg 2-0, but anything can happen, and we want to give a great response... in front of our fans.
"The team is confident of playing a great game and I am, too. To the fans, I say, 'Think positive, let's believe, get ready to come back'."
Expectations are high that he can reproduce his improbable hat-trick, which lifted Real Madrid past Wolfsburg in April 2016 with the Spanish giants 2-0 down to the German side after the first leg.
Juventus also have a history of bouncing back in European football's top-tier competition, having overcome a deficit eight times, including the 1996 quarter-finals against Real on their way to winning their second European Cup.
However, Ronaldo, the top scorer in the Champions League for the last six seasons, has scored just once in this year's competition and his task will not get any easier with Atletico's miserly backline yet to concede in their past five games.
Diego Simeone's men have also let in only 17 goals this season - the fewest of any team in LaLiga.
Meanwhile, Schalke will travel to Manchester City for the second leg of their last-16 tie with the axe hanging over coach Domenico Tedesco and confidence at rock bottom.
While the German Bundesliga side put up a creditable showing in the first leg, with City needing two late goals to win 3-2, their fortunes have since nosedived, leaking 11 goals in three league defeats to leave them four points above the relegation places.
Tedesco has already been given an ultimatum by new sporting director Jochen Schneider, with his future resting on the results of the Etihad meeting and a home game with Leipzig on Saturday.
But the German-Italian is unlikely to get much respite against Pep Guardiola's men, who have won their last nine games at home.
Schalke's Austria striker Guido Burgstaller insisted that the squad are still behind Tedesco, although he admitted "hard times are waiting for us" given the team's abysmal form this season.
He said: "No points, no big improvement.
"Things won't get easier, we have to be prepared for that."
