Football: Manchester United not 'satisfied' despite winning run, says David de Gea

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United's perfect record under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought renewed hope to the club but qualifying for the Champions League will still be 'difficult', goalkeeper David de Gea has said.
Sixth-placed United have won all six league games since the Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea from 11 points to three, but they are still 16 points behind league leaders Liverpool who have 60 points.
"We're happy with the wins but we aren't satisfied with the overall situation. This is a club that should be fighting for the title," de Gea told Sky Sports.
"We want to get back into the Champions League places, which will be a difficult objective, but we have managed to reduce the points deficit quite a bit."
After advancing to the fifth round of the FA Cup at Arsenal's expense, United next host Burnley in the league on Tuesday (Jan 29) and de Gea is wary of their opponents who have won 10 points from their last four games.
"They're on a good run of results but we're playing at home, and we're also on a good run of form, so we're fully confident of winning all three points," the Spaniard added.
"They are dangerous and we know the kind of style they will use against us. They like to put you under pressure with long balls, and they're very dangerous at set-pieces."
United last beat Burnley at home in 2015 with the visitors earning a draw in the last two league matches at Old Trafford.

David de Gea is adamant Manchester United are not "satisfied" with their situation despite winning eight games in a row because the Premier League title is out of reach.

Football: Premier League calls on fans to behave after incidents of abuse

LONDON (AFP) - The Premier League published a message to fans on Friday (Dec 14) calling on them to support their teams in the right way following recent incidents of abuse that have blighted the game.
Raheem Sterling was subjected to alleged racial abuse during Manchester City's defeat at Chelsea last week.
The England forward later issued a statement accusing the British media of fuelling racism in the way it reports certain stories about black players.
Chelsea banned four supporters pending an investigation and were then forced to condemn anti-Semitic chanting during Thursday's Europa League tie with Vidi in Budapest.
A Tottenham fan was also arrested during the recent north London derby at Arsenal after a banana skin was thrown onto the pitch in the direction of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as he celebrated putting the Gunners ahead.
With a packed festive schedule to come, the Premier League has asked for any abuse to be reported.
"Some brilliant football has been played this Premier League season and the vast majority of fans have generated exciting and passionate atmospheres in stadiums," the statement said.

"However, there have been incidents recently where a very small minority have behaved unacceptably.
"As we head into the festive season, with matches coming thick and fast, we ask all supporters to get behind their teams in passionate, positive and respectful ways. Support for a club should never include excessive aggression or discrimination towards the opposition."
Chelsea earlier promised to take the "strongest possible action" against any supporters found to have sung an anti-Semitic chant in Budapest.
Minutes into the match with Vidi, which ended 2-2, a vocal minority of Chelsea fans were heard singing a derogatory chant about Tottenham supporters, featuring anti-Semitic language.
Chelsea in January launched a campaign to raise awareness and educate fans about anti-Semitism in football and the club, including owner Roman Abramovich, who is Jewish, have expressed disgust at the latest incident.
"Anti-Semitism and any other kind of race-related or religious hatred is abhorrent to this club and the overwhelming majority of our fans," said a Chelsea spokesman.
"It has no place at Chelsea or in any of our communities."
Anti-discrimination leaders and Jewish groups condemned the chanting.

Spurs derailed by early penalty

Spurs derailed by early penalty

MADRID • Mauricio Pochettino admitted "it was very tough" on his Tottenham side after a 23-second penalty conceded by Moussa Sissoko meant three weeks of planning effectively went out the window from the kick-off.
Having worked wonders to get Spurs to their first Champions League final, especially after becoming the only club in Premier League history not to sign a player in the last two transfer windows, the club manager was hopeful the footballing gods would smile upon his team in Madrid on Saturday.
But a moment of folly from Sissoko, who was adjudged to have handled in the box, laid waste to his tactical preparations, allowing Liverpool to keep his players in check, with Mohamed Salah converting the spot kick.
Jurgen Klopp's team were far from their free-flowing best, the Reds never really had to get out of second gear as the early goal enabled them to shut up shop, again proving why they had the best defensive record in England this term.
Although Spurs offered more of a threat after the break, they were reduced to speculative strikes from long range and their first shot on target came only in the 74th minute.
Alisson was also a safe pair of hands in goal, comfortably dealing with subsequent shots from Son Heung-min, Christian Eriksen and substitute Lucas Moura.
After the 2-0 defeat - substitute Divock Origi added a second late on - Pochettino insisted he was "so proud of my players" as they "were unlucky" before defending his decision to start Harry Kane and Harry Winks, who were quiet on the night, with the pair missing the league run-in through injury.
He said: "Finals are about winning, not about playing well - it's not tactics. To start 1-0 down from the start was tough, we changed our plans. That was the circumstance we cannot manage or prepare for. You can never believe you will be 1-0 down after a minute.
"To concede a penalty after 20 seconds has a massive impact. It's so painful, but we need to keep going. Of course, it's going to be tough but, after a few hours, we need to change our minds and be positive.
"My decisions were all about analytics and thinking, and all of the information."
While the decision to award the penalty looked slightly harsh, with the ball appearing to hit Sissoko first on the chest before striking his upper arm, it was the correct one.
Uefa's chief refereeing officer Robert Rossetti had told the Times of London in January that with the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Champions League this season, officials "would penalise any unnatural arm movement that makes contact with the ball".
That was why referee Damir Skomina had no hesitation to point to the spot as Sissoko already had his arm up when Sadio Mane crossed the ball - and a quick referral to the VAR corroborated the call.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand also blasted the France midfielder for "making the decision easy".
The pundit told BT Sport: "When it's up in the air in the penalty area, you're asking for trouble. I don't know why his hand is up there - whom is he talking to?"
Pochettino will now have to contend with a summer of speculation over his future, but the Argentinian, who has been linked with a move to Juventus or Bayern Munich, suggested he may stay in north London to try to guide Spurs to another European final.
The 47-year-old, who has yet to lift silverware as a coach, told BT Sport: "When you live this experience, you want to do it again. I hope we can do it again in the future.
"It's about trying, it's about believing, it's about building, and I hope it happens again as soon as possible."

Football: Body found in wreckage of plane carrying soccer player Emiliano Sala, investigators say

LONDON (REUTERS) - Air accident investigators said on Monday (Feb 4) they had found the wreckage of the missing aircraft carrying Premier League soccer player Emiliano Sala on the seabed near Guernsey and that a body was visible inside.
The 28-year-old Argentina-born forward had been en route from Nantes in western France with pilot David Ibbotson to make his debut for Welsh team Cardiff City when the plane is believed to have crashed into the sea on Jan 21.
"The object is wreckage from the missing Piper Malibu aircraft," Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch said in a statement.
"Tragically, in video footage from the ROV, one occupant is visible amidst the wreckage.
"The AAIB is now considering the next steps, in consultation with the families of the pilot and passenger, and the police."
The wreckage was found on Sunday following a privately-funded underwater search which began after two seat cushions were discovered on the French coast that likely belonged to the aircraft.
The AAIB said it had now concluded it was the missing Piper Malibu aircraft, issuing an underwater image of the crashed plane with part of its registration number - N264DB - clearly visible.

"The image shows the rear left side of the fuselage including part of the aircraft registration," the AAIB said.
"We intend to publish an interim report within one month of the accident occurring."

Football: Qatar coach hailed as 'our Guardiola' after stunning Asian Cup win

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Qatar coach Felix Sanchez shrugged off comparisons to Pep Guardiola on Friday (Feb 1) after masterminding a breathtaking Asian Cup victory just three years before the 2022 World Cup on home turf.
Almoez Ali scored a tournament-record nine goals and the Maroons conceded only once as they swept to the first continental title in their history, beating Japan 3-1 in the final.
Ali said he saw shades of Manchester City's Guardiola in Sanchez, who coached Barcelona's youth players before joining Qatar's national academy in 2006 and working his way through the ranks.
"I've been working with him for nine years, he's highly intelligent," said the 21-year-old striker.
"I compare him to Guardiola because he has the same ideas."
But Sanchez told AFP that Ali only made the comment "because I'm there (listening) and he wants to keep playing".
"I've worked with Almoez for a very long time and we have good relationship," the Spaniard said.
"He's very easy to coach because he's a hard worker and he deserves everything that has happened to him in this tournament."

Qatar upset former champions Saudi Arabia, Iraq and South Korea on their march to the final, but those weren't the only challenges they faced.
The Qataris were pelted with shoes and plastic bottles by a hostile home crowd as they beat the United Arab Emirates 4-0 in the semi-finals.
The UAE then lodged a protest over the eligibility of Ali and defender Bassam Al-Rawi which was dismissed just hours before the final.
Sanchez insisted he had "no concerns" about the eligibility row and also dismissed speculation that notoriously trigger-happy Qatar might replace him with a big-name coach before the World Cup.
"I'm very proud to be the Qatar national team coach. Today we made history. I'm only thinking about today. It's a great day for me and the players and the country," Sanchez said.
"There's always news about this person and that person but we're focused on our work and we have the full support of the QFA.
"So no concerns about the World Cup, it's in 2022 and you don't even know what's going to happen in two weeks."

Barcelona have to learn to hit the target: Valverde

Barcelona have to learn to hit the target: Valverde
LYON • Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde let his players know in no uncertain terms their struggles in front of goal could cost them dear, admitting their 0-0 draw at Lyon in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie was a "dangerous result".
While the Spanish champions had the lion's share of possession on Tuesday, they were profligate with only five of 25 shots on target.
The home team, who were missing suspended captain Nabil Fekir, almost made them pay when Martin Terrier hit the bar early on.
Lionel Messi and his teammates were once again left frustrated on their travels and have now gone six away matches without winning in the knockout stages, scoring just a single goal in three years.
Luis Suarez's European form is of particular concern to Barcelona fans - he has yet to open his account this season and again failed to net away from the Nou Camp - a drought that dates back to Sept 16, 2015.
But Valverde dismissed Suarez's critics, insisting he was not worried as the Uruguay international was still "generating scoring chances, which is what is asked of a striker".
He said: "Even if he doesn't have chances, he creates them for his teammates. Opponents are frightened of him.

 • 24

 • Hours Luis Suarez played without scoring an away goal for Barcelona in the Champions League, since he netted against Roma in 2015

"Football is like that and strikers will have these streaks. The important thing is to have chances."
Defender Gerard Pique also backed his teammate to rediscover his touch in front of goal, claiming if "Suarez has shown one thing, it is that he has a lot of goals in him".
However, with Barcelona not at their flowing best after a run of four draws in their past five matches, Valverde conceded "the tie is in the air" when Lyon arrive in Spain for the second leg on March 13.
The Spaniard added: "I don't think it's very easy to win away from home in the Champions League. We have absolutely dominated and they have not lost in this competition this season.
"We played good football, but you have to hit the target as well, and we didn't. We deserved a better result and did enough to win. It just wasn't our night. We are on the right road, though and... we will try to win it in front of our fans."

MANCHESTER (AFP) – Sergio Aguero grabbed a hat-trick as Manchester City scored four times inside 25 minutes to thrash Chelsea 6-0 and leapfrog Liverpool again to top spot in the Premier League on goal difference on Sunday (Feb 10).
Aguero should have had even more than three as the Argentine missed a glorious early chance and hit the bar in the second-half in a humiliating afternoon for Maurizio Sarri’s men.
Raheem Sterling started and ended the scoring and Ilkay Gundogan also netted in the first quarter of the game as City ended what could have been a testing week with a trip to Everton in between the visits of Arsenal and Chelsea with maximum points.
Jurgen Klopp’s men maintain the advantage of a game in hand, but handed a reprieve by Liverpool’s draws against Leicester and West Ham in recent weeks, City look determined to become the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League. Chelsea on the other hand slip to sixth with the scale of the defeat sure to raise further doubts over Sarri’s future.
A 4-0 defeat to Bournemouth in their last away game was Chelsea’s heaviest league defeat since 1996. And this was their worst loss in any competition since 1991 after failing to recover from Sterling’s fourth-minute opener.
Eden Hazard went to sleep from Kevin de Bruyne’s quickly taken free-kick and Bernardo Silva had acres of space to cross for the England international to fire home. Pep Guardiola had described this match as a “final” for his side given that Chelsea had a week to prepare, while City ground out a 2-0 win at Everton on Wednesday.
Guardiola fell to the floor in exasperation when Aguero somehow side-footed wide with his easiest chance of the game moments later.

But the Catalan coach need not have worried that would prove a costly miss as Aguero made amends in stunning fashion by blasting into the top corner from 25 yards to double City’s after just 13 minutes. Aguero had a simple task to make it 3-0 six minutes later when he pounced on Ross Barkley’s slack header towards his own goal.
And Gundogan’s shot from the edge of the area then had too much power for the world’s most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to compound Chelsea’s woes.
Such was the defensive collapse at the other end, Gonzalo Higuain had little chance to shine but the Argentine striker was unfortunate not to score his third goal in as many league starts for Chelsea when Ederson turned over his dipping volley five minutes before the break.
That was as much of a response as Chelsea mustered, though, and it only got worse for Sarri’s chances of keeping his job in the second period. Aguero missed his first chance to seal a second hat-trick in two games when he headed against the crossbar.
But when Sterling was too quick for Cesar Azpilicueta and chopped down by the Spaniard inside the area, Aguero coolly slotted home from the penalty spot to move level with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah as the Premier League’s top scorer on 17 for the season.
Even after Aguero went off to a standing ovation, City’s strength in depth shone through as Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and David Silva came off the bench.
And Silva’s pass opened the visitors up again for the sixth as he picked out Oleksandr Zinchenko who crossed for Sterling to tap home.

Football: Man City back on top, Huddersfield go down

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester City returned with a swagger from the international break on Saturday (March 30), resuming their quest for four trophies with another dominant 2-0 win at Fulham that thrust them back to the top of the Premier League.
On the afternoon that Huddersfield Town were relegated and Manchester United celebrated the full-time managerial appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 2-1 win over Watford, City again demonstrated why they remain the league's benchmark.
Bernardo Silva scored for the third game in a row and Sergio Aguero extended his league-leading tally to 19 in a dazzling early spell, allowing the champions to ease to a seventh straight league victory while never having to hit the heights.
It restored City's advantage at the top, one point ahead of Liverpool on 77 points with both sides having played 31 games, though Juergen Klopp's men could return to the summit with a win over third-placed Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Still, City, who have won the League Cup and are in the FA Cup semi-finals and Champions League quarter-finals, moved closer to an unprecedented, if still unlikely, 'quadruple' with 14 matches left.
Without seemingly having broken stride, their cosmopolitan crew reconvened after the international break and looked as if they had never been apart as soon as Bernardo Silva arrowed in a left-footed strike within five minutes.
For manager Pep Guardiola, the lunchtime stroll at Craven Cottage, featuring the return of key players like Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho after injury, felt like the most perfect resumption with the pressure immediately restored on Liverpool.
"The first 15, 20 minutes was incredible with the way we played," he told the BBC.
"After the international break, you usually miss a bit with your rhythm. This game was tricky - 12.30 on a Saturday, a sunny day. That is unusual, and that is why I am so satisfied.
"We don't think too much about what people say about the quadruple. What Liverpool and Manchester City have done in the Premier League both deserve credit. That's why we are (both) here."

WINNING START

Manchester United moved into fourth place, level with Tottenham Hotspur on 61 points having played a game more, as Solskjaer got his permanent reign off to a winning start with victory over unfortunate Watford.
Goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial secured United's win, even though this was far from their most convincing performance under the Norwegian as Watford deserved more for their enterprise than a late Abdoulaye Doucoure consolation.

Still, the win lifted United above Arsenal, who host Newcastle United on Monday.
At the other end of the table, as 19th-placed Fulham's defeat left them a step closer to what looks certain relegation, Huddersfield's even more inevitable demotion to the Championship was confirmed with a 2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
The Terriers became only the second team in the Premier League era to be relegated before the end of March as they lost to goals from Luka Milivojevic and Patrick van Aanholt.
Wins for 17th-placed Burnley, 2-0 at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers, and 16th-placed Southampton, 1-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion, ensured their fate was sealed as they matched Derby County's record, set in 2008, for the earliest relegation from the Premier League after 32 games.
Leicester City marked an emotional day for the club on what would have been the 61st birthday of their late owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who died in a helicopter accident in October, by beating Bournemouth 2-0 at the King Power Stadium.
His image was flashed up on the big screen along with the words "Always in our hearts" before the match and, in the 61st minute, the fans rose to applaud his memory.
In the day's late game, West Ham United, after six unbeaten matches at the London Stadium, came unstuck with a lacklustre 2-0 home defeat by Everton Goals from Kurt Zouma and Bernard moved Everton above the Hammers into ninth, one point behind Wolves and Leicester.

Football: Manchester City stop the rot against Southampton

SOUTHAMPTON (AFP) - Manchester City showed they are willing to accept the challenge of Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title with a 3-1 win away to Southampton on Sunday (Dec 30).
Following shock defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester, reigning champions City cut the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Liverpool to seven points ahead of their meeting with the Merseysiders at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.
But they allowed a limited Southampton side back into the game after a dominating start, which suggests there are still frailties for Liverpool to exploit.
David Silva put City ahead after 10 minutes but they passed up a number of chances to add to the lead and gifted Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg an equaliser in the 37th minute.
For a period, Pep Guardiola's side looked fragile, but a James Ward-Prowse own-goal and a header by Sergio Aguero just before half-time restored their confidence.
Saints' frustrations boiled over with a red card for Hojbjerg after a wild challenge on Fernandinho late in the game.
Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl sprang a surprise in his team selection by giving a debut to 18-year-old former Chelsea starlet Kayne Ramsay at right-back.

City should have gone ahead in the fifth minute when Jack Stephens allowed Raheem Sterling to steal possession and set up David Silva.
But the City man tried to be too deliberate, with his shot blocked by goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
But Saints could also have taken a more surprising lead after eight minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi's clever flick over the City defence sent Charlie Austin clear.
Austin's first touch, however, was dreadful and sent the ball into Ederson's grateful arms.
Instead of being a goal up, the home side were behind within a minute.
The left side of their defence was opened up with ease by a simple one-two, leaving Bernardo Silva clear of full-back Matt Targett and free to advance down the right. He had all the time he wanted to pick out the unmarked David Silva, who hit the ball first-time past McCarthy.
Riyad Mahrez then shot wide after a move that began with City playing a series of passes inside their own penalty area.
And Aguero squandered an excellent chance in the 25th minute, hitting his shot against McCarthy after Sterling had accelerated past the hapless Targett.
But overplaying at the other end almost proved City's undoing.
Ederson was nearly caught by Austin before dribbling round the striker. But he showed a mastery of the more conventional goalkeeping arts on the half-hour with a diving save to keep out Austin's glancing header from a corner by Ward-Prowse.
City did not heed the warning and Saints were level after 36 minutes.
Oleksandr Zinchenko was slow to see Hojbjerg closing in on him and the Southampton captain robbed the Ukraine defender and strode forward before lashing the ball in from 15 yards.

City double stuns Saints

Zinchenko could count himself lucky that referee Paul Tierney did not see his barge on Ward-Prowse after 44 minutes as a penalty.
And the home crowd were still complaining about that decision when City retook the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Sterling forced his way down the left and fired in a low cross that hit the foot of Ward-Prowse and zipped between the surprised McCarthy and his near post.
And the crowd's disbelief was complete three minutes into first-half stoppage time when Aguero rose unchallenged by Jan Bednarek to nod Zinchenko's cross under McCarthy.
In the second half both sides went through the motions. City had the points they needed and Southampton were happy to avoid further damage to their confidence and goal difference. But even then City could have had three or four more goals.
Sterling shot straight at McCarthy, Aguero hit the angle of the post and crossbar, and Mahrez blasted straight at the goalkeeper.
Frustration got the better of Hojbjerg, who launched into a scissors-style challenge on Fernandinho and was rightly sent off.

Belgium coach hails Courtois for calm reaction to error

BRUSSELS • Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has defended Thibaut Courtois following his error on Thursday, which led to an equaliser during the 3-1 win over Russia in their Euro 2020 Group I qualifier at Brussels' King Baudouin Stadium.
Captain Eden Hazard scored twice for Belgium to spare the blushes of his goalkeeper, who gifted Russia's Denis Cheryshev a soft goal when he failed to clear the ball in time.
"After that incident, you could see why Thibaut is the No. 1 in the world," Martinez said in a press conference after the match.
"He played as if nothing had happened and remained icy calm.
"Impressive, the way he reacted after his mistake. Credit to Russia for that counter goal. At times they put a lot of pressure, so we made the wrong decision at the time."
Youri Tielemans opened the scoring with his first international goal before Hazard netted his brace to clinch the three points for Belgium.
Martinez's men led as early as the 15th minute when Timothy Castagne's pass fed Tielemans on the edge of the box and, as Russia's defensive line opened up, the Leicester midfielder fired a low shot past goalkeeper Guilherme Marinato.
But their lead lasted barely a minute before Courtois made his error.
The Real Madrid custodian dallied in possession following a back-pass and, when pressed into action, he gave the ball straight to Cheryshev on the edge of the box and the winger, who scored four goals at last year's World Cup, finished into an empty net.
He was, however, unfazed and insisted after the match that such instances do not happen often for him.
"I don't think I've made many mistakes in my career, so if you make one, you're obviously not happy," said the 26-year-old .
"I am satisfied with the victory and also with the game I played after my foul. I remained calm, I am happy with that. There is no problem."
Striker Michy Batshuayi was asked by Martinez to lead the line in the absence of the injured Romelu Lukaku, while the Hazard brothers, Eden and Thorgan, played together for only the third time in a national team shirt.
"I enjoyed myself tonight. I take a lot of pleasure from this victory, in which I scored two goals," said skipper Hazard.
"After our last game against Switzerland (a 5-2 Nations League defeat), we had to respond in front of our own fans."

Klopp wants 'no regrets'

LONDON • Liverpool will look to finish the season as strongly as possible so that there will be no blame attached to their players even if they do lose out on the Premier League title to Manchester City.
The Reds (88 points) trail City by one point with three games to go and manager Jurgen Klopp has every intention to take the title race right down to the wire.
At a press conference ahead of today's clash at home to relegated Huddersfield, he said: "There are three games left, we want to win them. Huddersfield, Newcastle and Wolves. That's the situation.
"If we win it, we win it. If we don't, there are no regrets as long as we give our best.
"If we win our next two games, then the title will be decided on the final match day and that would be pretty special."
His men are looking to win their first league title since 1990 but, regardless of how they finish, he insisted his players would continue to grow and improve as they were far from "the finished article".
The German said: "The club and the people are waiting for a long time for it (the title).
"It's rather surprising because last season, we were 25 points behind (City).
"We have to carry on, but only one team will be champions. However the season ends up, it is only the first step. We will carry on and we will see.
"We don't only play for being champions at the end of the season. Yes, it's a big target and we are pretty close and have a chance, but it's the first time, not the last time."
While his team have to travel to Barcelona for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final next Wednesday, Klopp confirmed he would not be tinkering with his first XI against Huddersfield.

The 51-year-old said: "This will be the last game I overthink anything. I will not push that preparation with a fresh line-up. We have enough time to recover for the next game. Barcelona have nothing to do with Friday night."
He also touched on the Professional Footballers' Association's Team of the Year that was revealed yesterday, claiming more should have been included as "his team are (the) team of the season anyway".
Four of his players - Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane - made the list.
Klopp added: "From my point of view, there could have been four, five, six, maybe seven more players involved.
"The players in the league make the decision so it's the most honest competition of the year.
"Mo (Salah) deserved to be in there, Gini (Wijnaldum) plays an incredible season, Hendo (Jordan Henderson), if it was today, he would probably be in. All the players deserve to be in."

Football: Napoli stumble at Fiorentina and trail Juventus by 8pts, Martinez gets Inter back to winning ways

MILAN (AFP) - Napoli could finish the weekend trailing Italian Serie A leaders Juventus by 11 points, after Carlo Ancelotti's wasteful side stuttered to a 0-0 draw at Fiorentina on Saturday (Feb 9).
Fiorentina goalkeeper Alban Lafont produced a string of saves to deny Piotr Zielinski and Dries Mertens as Napoli failed to score away from home for the third game running.
"We dropped two points that we would've deserved for attacking from start to finish," Ancelotti told Sky Sport Italia.
"In some ways, it was an impeccable performance, but we weren't clinical enough in front of goal and were forced to make do with a point."
Hosts Fiorentina drew for the 11th time in 23 matches this season. Their best chance came just after half-time when French midfielder Jordan Veretout was denied by an excellent stop from Alex Meret.
Inter Milan, in third, got back to winning ways with Argentine Lautaro Martinez coming off the bench late and scoring the only goal after 79 minutes in a 1-0 victory at Parma.
Radja Nainggolan set up the Argentinian to give Luciano Spalletti's side their first goal and league win of 2019.
Inter are now nine points behind Napoli (52 points), with Roma in fourth and Lazio fifth (both have 38 points) after their wins over Chievo and Empoli earlier this week.
Unbeaten Juventus could stretch their advantage to double digits on Sunday when they travel to mid-table Sassuolo.

Inter Milan, in third, got back to winning ways with Argentine Lautaro Martinez coming off the bench late and scoring the only goal after 79 minutes in a 1-0 victory at Parma. Radja Nainggolan set up the Argentine to give Luciano Spalletti's side their first goal and league win of 2019.

VAR drama mars Juve's historic win

TURIN • Juventus set a new points record in Serie A on Saturday with 53 from 19 games, but the seven-time defending Italian champions signed off for the winter break with the controversy surrounding the role of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ringing in their ears.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Juventus, undefeated in the league this season, closed out the year with a 2-1 win over Sampdoria to go nine clear of second-placed Napoli.
But VAR played a key role at the Allianz Stadium as two debatable penalties were awarded - one for Massimiliano Allegri's men and one for Sampdoria - while the opposition also had an added-time equaliser controversially ruled out by the technology.
Ronaldo curled in the opener after just two minutes in Turin, adding a second from the spot on 65 minutes to go top of the league's scoring charts on 14 goals and Allegri was delighted with the hard-fought victory.
The Bianconeri have dropped points just twice, against Genoa in October and Atalanta in midweek, and are firmly on track for an eighth consecutive Scudetto.
The Juventus coach told reporters: "It was important to end the year on a high and it wasn't at all easy.
"Records are meaningless, if not to improve and raise the bar. We do have the perception that with Ronaldo, there's a better chance of winning the Champions League. However, we're not even in January yet and there's a long way to go."
However, his counterpart Marco Giampaolo slammed Ronaldo's penalty as "a gift", before adding that (Riccardo) Saponara's goal should never have been cancelled".
He blasted: "For me, morally, the game was 2-2."
According to the BBC, the VAR was right to award Sampdoria's penalty as well as rule out Saponara's strike for offside, but Ronaldo's spot-kick should not have been given as Alex Ferrari's handball was not deliberate.

Stags, Protectors and Cheetahs aim to dethrone Albirex

Stags, Protectors and Cheetahs aim to dethrone Albirex
Since 2015, no local team have won the Singapore Premier League (previously known as the S-League), and no team have broken the Albirex Niigata monopoly since 2016.
But a trio of regular contenders and dark horses have emerged in a bid to end the Japanese team's dominance this season.
Five-time champions Tampines Rovers and two-time winners Home United have already beaten the White Swans this year, and kept the bulk of their respective squads.
With chairman Desmond Ong handing out multi-year contracts since coming on board in 2017, the Stags are benefiting from stability and continuity as their players show understanding of their roles and responsibilities on the pitch.
The young and talented - such as 19-year-old Singaporean Joel Chew and 20-year-old Serb Zehrudin Mehmedovic - are complemented by seasoned campaigners such as Canadian Jordan Webb, 30, and 41-year-old centre-back Daniel Bennett, into his 21st season.
"Having kept the bulk of players from last season definitely helps in terms of chemistry," said Webb, who has 79 goals in 208 league games over nine seasons. "I would be selling us short if I say we are not going for all the trophies. We have good atmosphere, good ideas and the energy levels are high."
His coach Gavin Lee added: "We want to be effective in and out of pre-season. If we can win and entertain with attractive football, that would be the ideal scenario."
The Protectors were the best local side last season, finishing as SPL runners-up and winning the AFC Cup Asean zonal final.
Like Tampines, they have retained 17 of 24 players, including South Korean linchpin Song Ui-young and the evergreen Shahril Ishak, who combined for 40 goals in all competitions last term.
They boast the impressive Under-23 trio of forward Adam Swandi, central midfielder Hami Syahin and central defender Taufiq Muqminin.
With their last major trophy coming in the Singapore Cup in 2013 and their last league title in 2003, Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki said it is time to end the drought.
"We want to build on our successes last season and go one better," said Saswadimata, whose side beat Albirex on penalties in the season-opening Community Shield last Saturday.
"It should be one of the most open seasons in recent years, but we won't write them off. They can only get better training full-time, without national service or school commitments (like local clubs).
Meanwhile, the dark horses in the nine-team SPL appear to be Hougang United, who added considerable firepower to a team who scored a league-low of just 22 goals in 24 games last season.
While they have never finished in the top half or won any major titles, the Cheetahs are gunning for history, with coach Clement Teo declaring that "third would be an underachievement".
Retaining forwards Iqbal Hussain, Shahfiq Ghani and Fazrul Nawaz, they signed Faris Ramli and welcomed back Croat Stipe Plazibat and captain Zulfahmi Arifin.
They initially secured the services of 2015 and 2016 top scorer Rafael Ramazotti, only for the Brazilian to go missing and sign for Mexican club FC Juarez. Instead, they have shored up their defence with South Korean centre-back Kong Ho-won.
Teo said: "Afiq Yunos was our only natural centre-back... The Ramazotti incident allowed us to sign Kong and it was a bonus we picked up Faris. He will give us a different dimension with his ability to take on players.
"With the team we assembled, we feel we need to be in the title race. Among our players, the mindset is, even a draw is underachieving."
Zulfahmi, who has returned after one season with Thailand's Chonburi, added: "Any team can win the league this season and Albirex are beatable. It depends on who are the most consistent across 24 games.
"We now have quality attackers and a great team, so we got to be more adventurous and clinical than before to fight for our targets."

Football: Kean winner puts Juventus on brink of Serie A title

MILAN (AFP) - Teenage sensation Moise Kean scored the winner to put Juventus one step away from an eighth consecutive Serie A title on Saturday (April 6) as a 2-1 comeback win over AC Milan pushed the champions 21 points clear at the top.
Kean - the victim of racist abuse earlier this week in Cagliari - came on as a substitute and fired in the winner on 84 minutes for his fifth goal in as many league games.
The Turin giants will seal a 35th Scudetto on Sunday with seven matches to spare - the earliest any team has won Serie A - if second-placed Napoli lose at home against Genoa.
Juventus were playing without injured striker Cristiano Ronaldo, recovering from a thigh injury, as they prepare for their Champions League quarter-final, first leg against Ajax.
But 19-year-old Kean has stepped up in the absence of the Portuguese superstar who is battling to be fit for Wednesday's game in Amsterdam.
"Even today Kean came on and scored, he is very good at that," said Allegri of the youngster who also scored twice in two Euro 2020 qualifiers for Italy.
"He's a young man who is doing very well, but let's leave him to be calm.
"Will he play on Wednesday (against Ajax)? We'll see, the substitutes are important as we saw today."
Krzysztof Piatek had put visiting AC Milan ahead five minutes before the break with his 21st goal of the season. Paulo Dybala pulled the hosts level from the spot on the hour mark.

ROMA BACK WINNING

For Milan, the defeat further damages their Champions League ambitions with just one point from their last four Serie A games.
Gennaro Gattuso's side are fourth but can be overtaken by Atalanta, who are one point behind and travel to third-placed Inter Milan on Sunday.
Roma, also targeting a Champions League berth, got back winning with captain Daniele De Rossi scoring the only goal against Sampdoria, to sit sixth, equal on points with Atalanta.
"We still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League if we beat Lazio next Saturday," said Gattuso, as they target a first Champions League campaign since 2013-14.
The visitors had come out firing.
Piatek missed a chance after two minutes, heading wide from Suso's cross. Franck Kessie was also off target early.
Sami Khedira came on for the first time since heart surgery a month ago, replacing fellow German Emre Can who went off early with an ankle sprain.
Milan were denied a penalty when Alex Sandro handled Hakan Calhanoglu's cross. The referee decided it was unintentional after a VAR review.
Minutes later, Piatek broke through to beat fellow Pole Wojciech Szczesny following a blunder from former Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci, who had been widely criticised for comments he made over the racist abuse Kean suffered in Cagliari.
Tiemoue Bakayoko pounced on his sloppy pass to burst through for Piatek to score.
Mario Mandzukic almost grabbed the equaliser before the break but Pepe Reina, at full stretch, tipped clear the Croat's acrobatic effort.
A reckless Mateo Musacchio foul on fellow Argentine Dybala allowed the hosts to pull level.
Kean came on for Dybala and 20 minutes later delivered the winner as Bonucci rushed to celebrate with the striker he had blamed for partly inciting a barrage of racist abuse in Sardinia.
In Genoa, De Rossi gave new coach Claudio Ranieri's just his second win in five games since taking over.
The captain finished off a rebound on 75 minutes after a Patrik Schick header was cleared.
Torino dropped out of the Europa League places with a goalless draw at Parma, as Lazio, with a game in hand, look to keep in the Champions League chase at home against Sassuolo on Sunday.

Sheikh Khaled sees Newcastle buy as an 'honour'

Sheikh Khaled sees Newcastle buy as an 'honour'
LONDON • Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is negotiating the £350 million (S$612 million) sale of the Premier League club to Abu Dhabi billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The news has produced much excitement on Tyneside but, despite reports in the Gulf it is a "done deal", there could still be a considerable distance to be covered.
While Newcastle have privately confirmed talks are continuing, Midhat Kidwai, the managing director of the Bin Zayed Group, which Khaled founded, said on Monday night "terms have been agreed".
He added: "We can confirm that representatives of Sheikh Khaled are in discussions with Mike Ashley and his team about the proposed acquisition of Newcastle.
"We view it as an honour to have the opportunity to build on the strong support, history and tradition of the club.
"We have agreed terms and are working hard to complete the transaction at the earliest opportunity."
A spokesman for the club declined to comment but it appears several hurdles remain and there are also caveats.
Despite living in Dubai, Khaled is a member of Abu Dhabi's royal family, and a cousin of Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour.
It had previously been regarded as unlikely that members of the same ruling family would buy rival football clubs.
Mansour's buyout of City was conducted amid the utmost secrecy and, as a rule of thumb, the takeovers that actually happen tend to be conducted in a similarly clandestine manner, so the leaking of details rings alarm bells.
Moreover any new owner would have to pass the league's owners' and directors' test.
Negotiations may or may not have reached that stage, but the league have adopted Newcastle's public "no comment" stance.
The Magpies' possible switch to Middle Eastern control perhaps explains the impasse over Rafael Benitez's contract extension.
His deal runs on June 30, but he has been in negotiations with Ashley over a new agreement and Khaled is thought to be keen to retain the Spanish manager.
Previous takeover bids by British businesswoman Amanda Staveley and former Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon evaporated after entering the due diligence stage.
But regardless of some nagging doubts, Khaled, who is said to have always been a fan of English football and has long harboured ambitions to buy a top-flight club, seems to be being taken much more seriously than most.
