Football: Aston Villa into playoff final after shootout win over West Brom

BRITAIN (REUTERS) - Aston Villa beat Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion 4-3 on penalties to reach the Championship playoff final on Tuesday (May 14) after the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.
Tammy Abraham, on loan from Chelsea, scored the decisive spot kick to send Villa into a Wembley final against either Derby County or Leeds United with a lucrative spot in the Premier League up for grabs.
Villa won the first leg 2-1 at home but Craig Dawson's first-half header levelled it up for West Brom.
The hosts had Chris Brunt sent off with 10 minutes of normal time remaining but they managed to hold out in the face of a Villa siege to get through extra time and into a shootout.
Keeper Jed Steer put Villa in control with great saves from Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi.
Albert Adomah could have sealed it for Villa but lifted his kick over the bar and when James Morrison scored for West Brom it piled the pressure on Abraham, but the young striker found the back of the net to spark celebrations.

Football: Sluggish Italian Serie A leaders Juventus lose unbeaten record after crashing 2-0 at humble Genoa

ROME (DPA, REUTERS) - Italian Serie A dominators Juventus lost 2-0 at Genoa on Sunday (March 17) to suffer a first league defeat this season, as they left ace Cristiano Ronaldo to rest in Turin.
Ex-Juventus midfielder Stefano Sturaro came on to fire home the opener on 72 minutes and Goran Pandev, also a substitute, finished off a counter-attack on 81 minutes.
After Ronaldo inspired them with a hat-trick in Wednesday's stunning 3-0 defeat of Atletico Madrid in the Champions League to go through to the quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate, Juve proved unable to maintain the tempo against brisk Genoa, who in October held the Bianconeri 1-1 in the first of their three stalemates.
Juve remain 18 points clear of Napoli, who play later at home to struggling Udinese. Genoa moved 11 points clear of the drop zone into 12th place with 10 games remaining.
"I expected a different Juventus," coach Massimiliano Allegri told Italian broadcasters. "We did not put in a good performance, we made some mistakes and then this goal came out of nowhere.
"Much like the Coppa Italia defeat to Atalanta, we picked the right game to lose, because it's just before the break for international duty, so we have time to unplug and rest."
"I am actually happy for Stefano, because if anyone had to score against us, I'm glad it was Sturaro. He's a lovely guy and suffered so much, out of action for practically a year with that tendon injury, so he deserves it."
Juve had dropped points just three times this season going into the game, with draws against Genoa, Atalanta and Parma, while they were unbeaten overall in the top flight for the last 31 rounds, since losing 1-0 to Napoli on April 22, 2018.

MADRID (REUTERS) - Sara Carbonero, the wife of Spain's World Cup-winning football captain Iker Casillas, has announced that she has undergone surgery for cancer just three weeks after the goalkeeper suffered a heart attack.
Casillas, who made 167 appearances for Spain and 725 for boyhood club Real Madrid before departing in 2015, fell ill during a training session with his current club, Porto.
Carbonero, 35, with whom Casillas has two children, announced via her Instagram page that she had undergone successful surgery on ovarian cancer.
"We hadn't yet recovered from the scare when life has once again surprised us," she wrote in a post late on Tuesday (May 21).
"This time it was my turn, this six letter word that I still have trouble writing. A few days ago I had a checkup and the doctors saw a malignant tumour in my ovary that has been operated on.
"Everything has gone very well, luckily we got it with plenty of time, but I still have a number of months of fighting ahead as I go through the required treatment.
"I know there's a tough road ahead but I'm sure it will have a happy ending."
Her 38-year-old husband, who was discharged from hospital on May 6, has said he will announce his plans in his own time.

Football: Guardiola places faith in Jesus with Aguero injured

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City will be without injured leading scorer Sergio Aguero as they try to regain the advantage in the Premier League title race against struggling Cardiff on Wednesday (April 3).
A thigh injury means the Premier League's leading marksman - he has 19 goals to his name - will sit it out with Brazil star Gabriel Jesus taking his place.
Victory over a side they thrashed 5-0 in the away fixture earlier this season would see City leapfrog Liverpool to lead the title race by a point, with both having played the same number of games.
City manager Pep Guardiola admitted Aguero faces a race to be fit for the FA Cup semi-final with Brighton on Saturday and the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final away to Tottenham next Tuesday.
"Tomorrow (Wednesday) Sergio is not able to play," said Guardiola. "He didn't train the last two days.
"Hopefully, he can on Saturday or next Tuesday. We will see his evolution in the next few days."
Guardiola, whose side is bidding for a historic quadruple in winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League to add to their League Cup success already this term, has faith in Jesus being able to fill in for Aguero.
"Gabriel is ready," said Guardiola.
"He is having a good season and it is not always easy to play in this club as a striker in the same position as Sergio.
"He is fighting against one legend and an incredible top player in his best season since we have been at the club.
"When Gabriel played, he played well. Tomorrow he is going to help us and fight and score goals and create space for others."
City might still have been top but for a late error by France's World Cup-winning captain Hugo Lloris gifting Liverpool all three points on Sunday in a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
"When you see that, you say 'Ah s**t'," he said.
"But after five or ten minutes, you think it's a nice but terrible challenge.
"Nobody said it would be easy. Nobody. We knew it and I knew it.
"Everybody is excited for what we are going to live in the next weeks.
"Let's beat Cardiff for the main target to go back top of the league with six games left.
"After that we live again, Wembley, to achieve the one final (FA Cup) I never experienced in my life in the oldest trophy, and after that the Champions League."

Tottenham Hotspur's Moussa Sissoko did not realize his side had advanced to the Champions League semi-finals until a member of the coaching staff informed him in the dressing room that Manchester City's last-gasp goal had been disallowed.

ST Young Star Award: Queensway Secondary's history-maker Putri Nur Syaliza keeps feet firmly on ground

SINGAPORE - Along a corridor near the main office at Queensway Secondary School hangs a photograph of Putri Nur Syaliza. It leads to the school field, the arena of choice for the 15-year-old footballer.
But she does not quite like it.
"I'm shy lah," she said, turning her gaze to the ground. "The school puts up pictures of students who have got good achievements... My friends were all shocked when they saw it, and they teased me for having my face on that wall."
To say that Putri has good achievements would be a massive understatement. She scored 19 goals in five games in the Schools National girls' B Division championship - including the third in the 5-2 win over Hong Kah in April's final - to finish as champion and top scorer.
She had a sensational year in the C Division, where she plundered 42 goals in just six games to become the top scorer of the competition and lead her school to the title.
She was also named the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Young Player of the Year after her debut season with champions Warriors FC in the five-team FAS Women's Premier League last year.
She has got a few more feathers in her cap, feathers that will likely ensure her photo stays on that school wall for some time to come.
Even before she lined up in the B Division final for Queensway, Putri was called up to the national women's team, trained twice and, 12 days before her 15th birthday, made her international debut.
That March 5 match against the Maldives saw her make history on two counts for either gender.
She became the youngest Singapore football international, as a 33rd-minute substitute, and the youngest scorer with the opener in the 2-0 win.
The secret to her excellence is simple. "I really, really love football, and I just want to play. I started playing when I was four, with my brother," she said.
In a football-mad family of seven, Putri, the youngest and only daughter, had a lot of help. One brother is Singapore Under-23 international Syahrul Sazali, who plies his trade with the Young Lions in the Singapore Premier League.
"I remember following him to play football in our neighbourhood in Choa Chu Kang, and playing 'monkey' with our neighbours," she said. "I was always in the middle, having to try and win the ball, but even now my defending is really bad," she quipped, before breaking out in laughter.
"Every one of us in the family is involved in football, even my mother who is managing an amateur club called Putra FC," said Putri. "And she's very supportive, taking me to training and matches too."
The support provided by Queensway is another key reason Putri has been able to focus on football. While her school team train thrice a week, she attends only one of those sessions. Instead, she trains three times with the national team, and twice with Warriors FC.
She said: "I really appreciate my school because I have friends who struggle to balance school football with national team (commitments). This way it's not tiring for me, so when I can, I go for both national team and school sessions."
Queensway's commitment to her sporting pursuits has gone even further. She was with the Under-16 team in Indonesia for May's AFF U-16 Girls' Championship and the school let her miss the mid-year exams.
"I'm really happy the school has been so supportive," she said.
Putri hopes to don national colours for next year's SEA Games, and has an eye on playing abroad, professionally but, for now, the aim is to improve.
"I just want to play football," she said. "And get better at defending - I'm really bad at it."

Football: Jorginho fires Chelsea as recalled Kepa shines

Football: Jorginho fires Chelsea as recalled Kepa shines

LONDON (AFP) – Maurizio Sarri declared the Kepa Arrizabalaga controversy was over after the Chelsea goalkeeper began to make amends for his Wembley mutiny with an impressive display in Sunday’s (March 3) 2-1 win at Fulham.
Sarri’s side took the lead through Gonzalo Higuain before Calum Chambers equalised at Craven Cottage.  In an incident-packed first half, the much-maligned Jorginho restored Chelsea’s lead with his first goal since the opening weekend of the season.
Chelsea were indebted to Kepa for a series of superb saves that preserved their lead after the break, lifting the sixth-placed Blues within two points of fourth-placed Manchester United, with a game in hand.
Sarri had dropped Kepa for Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday as punishment for the Spaniard’s refusal to be substituted during last weekend’s League Cup final defeat against Manchester City.  But Sarri had insisted Kepa remained his “first choice” and the world’s most expensive keeper returned in place of Willy Caballero after his one-game demotion.
Revealing he didn’t tell Kepa he had been recalled until a team meeting on the day of the game, Sarri said: “He played very well. It was a normal decision. He made a big mistake, he paid for it. Now the situation is closed.
“I can kill him, but I don’t think it is right. With another man I could have done it in another way, but I know him well.
“He has a good mentality. His behaviour during the week was very good.
“Kepa is a man. He was able to react very well, as we have seen today.”
Sarri believes Chelsea’s revival this week, coupled with Tottenham’s poor form, has made the top-four chase even tighter.  “We had a great opportunity today. Now we are only two points from the top four. We have to fight to the last minute of the last match,” he said.
“We are fighting. In the last four matches I think we did well.”
Despite an improved display in caretaker manager Scott Parker’s first game following the midweek sacking of Claudio Ranieri, second-bottom Fulham have lost eight of their past nine league games and sit 10 points from safety.
Kepa’s return almost started in embarrassing fashion when he made a complete hash of catching Kevin McDonald’s cross in a swirling wind, the ball slipping through his grasp as he was challenged by Ryan Babel.
It would have been an open goal for Babel, but the Fulham winger was slow to react and Kepa scrambled back to dive on the ball.  Chelsea made the most of their escape to take the lead in the 20th minute.  Willian’s pass picked out Cesar Azpilicueta’s run down the right and Chelsea’s captain whipped over a cross that Higuain met with an instinctive volleyed finish.

Kepa to the rescue

It was Higuain’s third goal in eight games since the Argentine striker joined on loan from Juventus in January.  Kepa redeemed himself with an acrobatic save to keep out Aleksandar Mitrovic’s volley from Ryan Sessegnon’s cross.
But from the resulting corner, Chelsea were punished for an awful piece of defending as Fulham grabbed a 28th-minute equaliser.
Chambers was left totally unmarked when Fulham took the corner quickly, Babel picking out his team-mate at the far post for a well-taken finish.  Three minutes later, Eden Hazard was the catalyst for Chelsea’s second goal with an incisive run into the Fulham area, the Belgian laying the ball back to the Jorginho, who guided a superb strike into the top corner from 18 yards.
Fulham were finding it impossible to stifle Willian and Azpilicueta down the right and the pair combined to tee up Higuain, whose powerful strike drew a brilliant one-handed save from Sergio Rico.  Exploiting the space left by Fulham’s creaky defence, Hazard and Willian both tested Rico with low drives soon after the restart.
Even with the perennially inconsistent David Luiz left on the bench, there were still moments of uncertainty from Chelsea at back.  Mitrovic blasted just over from 20 yards and Tom Cairney’s long-range effort forced a good stop from Kepa.
Joe Bryan forced Kepa to make another solid save and the Spaniard was firmly back in Sarri’s good graces by the time he repelled Mitrovic’s late header.  Sessegnon thought he had equalised in stoppage-time, but the winger’s goal was ruled out for offside.

Football: Juventus lose their stripes as new kit unveiled

MILAN (AFP) - Serie A champions Juventus on Sunday (May 12) unveiled their new home kit for the 2019-20 season, which for the first time in over a century removes the iconic black-and-white stripes traditionally worn by players.
The club were founded in 1897, but players have worn black and white stripes of various types since 1903.
Next season Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates will wear a half-and-half jersey with white on the right and black on the left.
The team will debut the new jersey against Roma in Serie A later on Sunday in Rome's Stadio Olimpico.
"The daring new design evokes the past, whilst igniting the future of the club through the evolution of the iconic black and white stripes," the team said.
"An unexpected flash of pink sits at the heart of the design and honours the first colour the club ever played in."
Juventus are the record Serie A winners with 35 titles, including the last eight in a row.
