Football: Man United to open 'experience centres' in China

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United announced on Tuesday (Jan 8) they are opening a series of "entertainment and experience centres" in China as they seek to capitalise on a huge fanbase in the world's most populous country.
The first centres, developed in partnership with Chinese property developer Harves, are scheduled to open in Beijing ,Shanghai and Shenyang by the end of 2020.
Arsenal last year opened a club-themed sports bar and restaurant in Shanghai and French side Paris Saint-Germain also have a hub in the same city, equipped with indoor football pitches and a bar.
Each venue at the Manchester United centres will feature "interactive and immersive experiences" and will include restaurants and a club store, the Premier League club said in a statement.
"We first visited China in 1975 and we're proud to have seen our fan base in the region grow and develop their passion for United over the years," said Manchester United's group managing director Richard Arnold.
"This new concept will allow them to get closer to the club they love."
China has become an important pre-season destination for European clubs, competing with the United States to draw top teams.
United said last year they had more than 107 million followers in China, describing the country as one of the club's most important markets.
The 20-time English champions built an enormous global fanbase during the 1990s and 2000s, a period in which they dominated the Premier League.

LONDON â€¢ Maurizio Sarri has tried everything this season in a bid to solve Chelsea's scoring woes from persisting with Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata despite their slump in form to playing Eden Hazard as a "false nine".
But, until last month's arrival of Gonzalo Higuain, on loan from Juventus until the end of the season, the Blues' attack has not quite lived up to the fans' expectations of "Sarri-ball".
While the goals have dried up, they have also been conceding at the other end, with Sarri under pressure following their heaviest Premier League defeat for 23 years in a shock 4-0 loss at Bournemouth last Wednesday.
Having suffered two successive losses in the league and sack rumours swirling, the Italian was indebted to Higuain, who opened his Blues account with a brace, and a double from Hazard as the pair inspired the home team to a 5-0 trouncing of rock-bottom Huddersfield on Saturday.
Although the Argentina striker failed to reproduce his best form while on loan at AC Milan earlier this season - scoring only eight goals in 20 appearances - he came to Stamford Bridge at his manager's behest after their successful spell together at Napoli.
And the 31-year-old, on his home league debut, demonstrated why Sarri was desperate for his signature as his presence up front enabled Hazard to return to his preferred position on the flanks, where he is at his most dangerous.
Not only did Chelsea look a far more vibrant team, it was also their biggest win of the season, with David Luiz adding the fifth.
Afterwards, Sarri told reporters he was encouraged by the link-up play between Higuain and Hazard.
He said: " I'm really very happy because apart from the goals, he (Higuain) is really very suitable to play very close to Eden. On the pitch, they are really very suitable to play one close to the other.
"For us, that is very useful. It will be useful for Higuain - he will be able to score goals for us - and also useful for Eden. I know very well that, when he arrived, he wasn't at the top of his physical condition. Now, he is improving."
While it is still early days with the Belgium forward playing only his second game alongside Higuain, there are signs that the budding partnership can flourish.
According to Sky Sports, Hazard found him seven times during the Terriers game - more passes than he has made to Giroud or Morata in any league game this season.
However, with the stinging defeat by the Cherries fresh in his mind, Sarri warned his side that they still needed "to improve the mentality".
He added: "As I said before, we have to arrive at every match with the same level of determination and motivation, and we don't need to lose a match to have the right motivation.
"So, we need to improve. We need to understand that, in the future, we should not have to lose a game to add motivation."

Zidane also won a Liga title in 2017 among nine trophies before standing down, having taken the club to the European summit, but they have endured a miserable season in his absence, first sacking Julen Lopetegui and then Santiago Solari.
Real president Florentino Perez has turned again to Zidane, who stepped in for Rafael Benitez in 2016 and quickly guided the team to Champions League glory, but this time he will be without the club's all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portugal forward's departure in July to Juventus has had a big impact on Real this season while their other key players, like Marcelo, Isco and Gareth Bale, have struggled and Zidane has a big job on his hands as he prepares to shake things up.
"Things will change, in every way. We have to change things for the years to come," he told a news conference on Monday at the Bernabeu. "Now the important thing is that I am back, and there is time to talk and see what needs to be done."
Perez explained that Zidane's return was to help restore the club's pride after a painful year.
"This season, we have not got the results we wanted and our responsibility is to put into action the reaction the team needs," he said at Zidane's presentation.

The Frenchman must oversee a regeneration by using the young players Solari brought through, including 18-year-old forward Vinicius Junior, left-back Sergio Reguilon and midfielder Marcos Llorente, as well as welcoming major new signings.
Chelsea's Eden Hazard is likely to be a prime target, with the Belgium forward having previously spoken of his admiration for Zidane, who won the World Cup as a player with France.

But Madrid have also struggled in midfield this season, with German international Toni Kroos and Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric, a World Cup runner-up with Croatia, not at their best.
Zidane must now evaluate his squad before deciding if Madrid need to reinforce the midfield as well as which of the players frozen out by Solari can be brought back into the fold.
Spanish international midfielder Isco was a key player for Zidane, especially in 2017 playing in the hole behind Ronaldo and Karim Benzema as Madrid charged to a La Liga and Champions League double, but fell out of favour the next season.

SOUTHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Southampton secured their Premier League status for another year after a thrilling 3-3 home draw with Bournemouth on Saturday (April 27) as Cardiff City slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Fulham.
The draw put Southampton in 16th place on 38 points, seven ahead of Cardiff and four clear of Brighton & Hove Albion with two games left to play.
"It was a crazy game, we are very happy now. It was a tremendous match," a relieved Ralph Hasenhuettl told reporters after steering his club to safety.
Fresh from scoring the fastest goal in Premier League history against Watford, Irish striker Shane Long again got Southampton off to a flying start with a goal in the 12th minute, but Dan Gosling equalised eight minutes later.
Long missed a sitter in the 24th minute, stabbing the ball against the post with the keeper stranded and the goal at his mercy, and it was to prove costly as Callum Wilson pounced to rattle home a rebound in the 32nd minute.
James Ward-Prowse put the Saints level with a skimming shot that flew in at the foot of the post 10 minutes into the second half.
Matt Targett thought he had put the icing on the cake for Southampton when he leapt to meet Yann Valery's cross, sending his header into the net to spark scenes of wild celebration.
They were interrupted when Wilson scuffed home his second goal, but news that Cardiff had gone behind to Fulham had filtered through to the ground and Southampton were able to enjoy confirmation of their survival in the top flight.
Southampton had nine points after winning just one of their opening 15 games when Austrian coach Hasenhuettl took over from Mark Hughes in December, and the 51-year-old went on to guide them to eight wins and five draws in 21 league games at the helm.
"We deserve this, we invested a lot in this time and learned a lot. We showed how beautiful we can play," he told reporters, adding that he would be aiming to rebuild his squad during the summer.
"The next step must be to get more clinical in some situations. Two games before the end, to be clear (of relegation) is fantastic for us," he said.

BARCELONA â€¢ After their remote hopes of another improbable Champions League revival were stopped dead by Lionel Messi and a rampant Barcelona, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United side have to undergo a huge overhaul to return to Europe's elite.
United tried in vain to summon up the spirit of 1999 at the same Nou Camp where they stunned Bayern Munich with a 2-1 comeback win in the Champions League final.

Solskjaer said he knew all along "there is work to be done and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level that Barcelona and other teams are at".
The Norwegian added: "We were fighting against a great team... but I've said all along this isn't going to change overnight.

Meanwhile, United said yesterday they are investigating racist abuse directed at defender Young on social media after the loss to Barcelona.
The England international was targeted on Twitter after the 33-year-old full-back endured a disappointing night at the Nou Camp.
"Manchester United utterly condemns racist social media comments posted around yesterday's Champions League fixture," the club said in a statement.
"We are working to identify individuals involved and we will take the strongest possible action we can against them."

Pochettino frustrated with new stadium's delay

LONDON â€¢ Tottenham's bid to gazump Manchester City and Liverpool to the Premier League title suffered a blow, after manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted it would be "tough" for the club to move into their new stadium this season.
Spurs are committed to playing at Wembley until March 2, when they host Arsenal in the north London derby, after which they have five league games left in the campaign.
While Spurs had hoped to open their 62,062-capacity ground on Sept 15 against Liverpool, they were forced to delay its opening after issues with the critical safety systems. The delays have helped to push up the cost of the facility to more than Â£850 million (S$1.4 billion).
At his press conference ahead of their home league game against Leicester today, he said: "My gut feeling (is that it is not ready), but I hope and I wish to be in the new stadium playing.
"My wish, my hope and my dream is to finish this season playing in the new stadium. We'll see if you can trust more in my gut or the capacity to finish the stadium before the end of the season."
Although Spurs have a deal to use Wembley for the rest of the term, fans have increasingly shown their reluctance to attend the venue.
The 29,164 attendance in the 2-1 win over Watford on Jan 30 was their lowest of the season.
Pochettino said that he understood their frustration, revealing he also wanted to leave Wembley as soon as possible.
The Argentinian said: "The people are going to be disappointed to play at Wembley, not because they don't like Wembley - we all love Wembley - but because we expect to already play in our new stadium.
"Did you see the last few games how many people were there? 30,000. I want to play in front of 60,000 - not 30,000.
"The 60,000 people in the stadium always help you to achieve three points and, for the fans, it's going to be a massive boost. That's going to translate to the team."
The 46-year-old also voiced his unhappiness at the league for not being more accommodating ahead of the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at home to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.
The German Bundesliga leaders have an extra day of rest as they played their league game against Hoffenheim yesterday, which Pochettino called "a massive disadvantage".
He told the BBC: "We are not receiving help. The Premier League must care about teams involved in the competition.
"In another country like Spain, Germany, France, clubs involved (in the Champions League) can be helped - the league is going to help you arrive in the best condition."

LONDON â€¢ Anfield is made for special European nights like this and Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson is confident his team will rise to the occasion when they host Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash tomorrow.
After returning to form with a 3-0 Premier League win against Bournemouth on Feb 9, the Reds jetted off to Marbella, Spain, for a four-day warm-weather training camp.
Left-back Robertson is adamant that the squad are now rejuvenated and ready for a crucial run of matches. After the Bayern game, the Reds travel to Old Trafford to tackle Manchester United in a crucial league fixture.
"Two massive games. When we landed in Marbella on Monday, our full focus was on the Bayern Munich game," Robertson told the club's official website.
"We need to be at full throttle for that game. They are such a good team and they have been the last six or seven years so we know what a tough task it will be.
"But we believe we can cause any teams problems and we have to be at our best."
Liverpool are undefeated at Anfield in European competitions since 2014, and Robertson believes the home support will be decisive.
"Everyone knows how special nights here are in the Champions League," said the 24-year-old Scotland international.
"We feed off each other. Players feed off the fans and the fans feed off the players because it's up to us to get them to have something to shout about.
"But it also helps when they're getting behind us and it can maybe give you that extra percentage in the game. That's what home fans are for."
Influential centre-back Virgil van Dijk is suspended for the first leg and the Reds' defensive situation is further complicated by injuries to Joe Gomez (fractured leg) and Dejan Lovren (hamstring).
This means that manager Jurgen Klopp could deploy Brazilian midfielder Fabinho alongside Joel Matip against the Bundesliga champions.
Former Liverpool centre-back Sami Hyypia is confident that the Reds can cope without van Dijk and expects other players to fill the void.
"It is very difficult to find a weakness. He is an ultimate centre-back and it would be a pleasure to play alongside him. He is so good," Hyypia said of the Â£75 million (S$131 million) arrival in January last year.
"These kinds of things (his suspension) give other players an opportunity to shine and take responsibility, and I hope the ones who play step up and do their job properly."
After an indifferent start to the Bundesliga season, Bayern are now just two points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund after a 3-2 win over Augsburg on Saturday but they have played a game more.
Hyypia warned the Reds that it would be wrong to discount the five-time European champions who last won the Champions League in 2013.
"When the draw was made, everyone was saying that Bayern were not the Bayern of old, but they are a very dangerous team," said the Finn. "Liverpool can't underestimate them. They need to respect them, analyse their weaknesses and then strike.
"I think one of their weaknesses is defending against the counter-attack, and Liverpool are not bad in that area. I think that can cause problems for them."
