Football: Three men selling illegal Premier League streams jailed in England for fraud

(REUTERS) - Three operators of a pirate streaming organisation - which provided illegal access to English Premier League soccer games to more than 1,000 pubs, clubs and homes in England and Wales over the last decade - have been jailed for a total of 17 years.
Steven King, who masterminded the fraud while trading under the names Dreambox, Dreambox TV Limited, and Digital Switchover Limited, was handed the biggest sentence of seven years and four months in jail.
Paul Rolston was sentenced to six years and four months while Daniel Malone was given three years and three months by Warwick Crown Court in central England after a four-week trial.
"The fraudulent companies earned in excess of Â£5 million pounds (S$8.9 million) through their illegal activity," the Premier League said in a statement.
The Premier League is eager to prevent illegal streaming to help protect the value of broadcast rights for media companies such as Sky and BT.
Premier League director of legal services Kevin Plumb said that the sentences reflected the seriousness of the crime.
"Using these services is unlawful and fans should be aware that when they do so they enter into agreements with illegal businesses," he added.
"They also risk being victims of fraud or identity theft by handing over personal data and financial details."

MADRID â€¢ French striker Antoine Griezmann has told Atletico Madrid he will leave them in the close season, the Spanish club said on Twitter on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old has a contract until 2023 with Atletico, but has a buy-out clause of â‚¬120 million (S$183.9 million) and has been the target of several approaches from LaLiga rivals Barcelona.
"Antoine Griezmann has told the club he will not continue as a Rojiblanco (red and white, the club's colours) next season," the club said.
Within a few moments, the 2018 World Cup winner then posted a video explaining himself.
"After speaking with Cholo (club coach Diego Simeone), then with (chief executive) Miguel Angel and the people in the hierarchy I wanted to speak with you, the fans, who have always given me a lot of love," said Griezmann.
"I wanted to tell you I have taken the decision to leave. I have had five wonderful seasons here and you will always be in my heart.
"The truth is, it has been difficult to take this route but it is what I feel I need and I would like to thank all of you for the love you have shown me during these five years."

He rejected an offer from Barca last June, documenting his internal struggles about whether to make the move in a documentary called The Decision, produced by Barcelona defender Gerard Pique's Kosmos production company.
The last contract he signed initially raised his release clause to â‚¬200 million but that figure will drop to â‚¬120 million on July 1.
Griezmann's departure may signal an exodus at Atletico. France defender Lucas Hernandez agreed to join Bayern Munich when they paid his â‚¬80 million release clause and long-serving captain Diego Godin's contract is coming to an end.

LONDON â€¢ Burton Albion will need a "miracle" to overcome the might of English Premier League champions Manchester City over two legs in the League Cup semi-finals, said manager Nigel Clough.
The son of legendary manager Brian Clough, who led Nottingham Forest to two European Cups triumphs in 1979 and 1980, is also no stranger to producing Cup upsets.
Clough was in his first spell in charge when Burton, then in English football's fifth tier, held a Manchester United side boasting Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney 0-0 in the FA Cup in 2006.
Burton have since progressed to the third tier and are lying ninth in League One, but Clough believes stopping Pep Guardiola's City, particularly when they travel to the Etihad today, is an even tougher task.
"I think this one over two legs," said Clough, when asked to compare which was the tougher challenge.
"When Rooney and Ronaldo came on after 59 minutes here for Manchester United, it's a similar sort of prospect with the likes of the quality that Manchester City have.
"But, away from home, it's a different thing. When they are on their own patch, as you saw against Liverpool (City won 2-1), they're as good and as confident as anything."

"We do what we have to do to become a great, great club," said the Spaniard.
"The great clubs don't choose competitions, don't choose games, you have to do your job.
"I would like to have two months' holiday right now, definitely - this month is really tough, but it is what it is.
"We want to become a top club and you cannot deny any game, we cannot drop any competition. We are going to play the next game like a final."

The German is facing a touchline ban or a fine after being charged by the Football Association (FA) for comments he made about referee Kevin Friend after his side's league match at West Ham on Feb 4.
Klopp intimated after the 1-1 draw that Friend's second-half performance had been affected by an assistant referee's mistake for Sadio Mane's opening goal.
Mane's goal stood at the London Stadium despite James Milner being clearly offside in the build-up before Michail Antonio's equaliser cost Liverpool two points in the title race.
Klopp said after the game: "As a human being, if I know I have made a big mistake in the first half, I don't want to open the gap any more.
"Referees are obviously human beings, and I understand that, but I didn't during the game because I had no clue that our goal was offside."
The FA confirmed in a statement that Klopp had been charged for "questioning the integrity" of the match official and he has until 6pm on Monday to respond.
It said: "It is alleged that comments he made in a post-match interview following Liverpool's league game against West Ham United on Feb 4, 2019, breached Rule E3(1) as they questioned the integrity of the match referee and/or implied bias."
Liverpool are second in the Premier League behind Manchester City on goal difference, and with a game in hand.

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona held off Atletico Madrid to ensure they will be three points clear at the top of La liga going into the winter break after beating a spirited Espanyol 2-0 at the Camp Nou on Saturday (Dec 22).
First-half goals from Ousmane Dembele and Lionel Messi were enough to move Ernesto Valverde's side up to 37 points and keep them one step ahead of Atletico, who earlier drew level with Barca with a 1-0 win over Espanyol thanks to an Antoine Griezmann penalty.
Dembele put the hosts into the lead after just nine minutes when he lashed home on the rebound after Messi's first-time shot was pushed into his path by Celta keeper Ruben Blanco.
Messi doubled his side's advantage just before half-time, bursting through competely unmarked to meet the excellent Jordi Alba's through ball and wrong-foot Blanco as he slotted in his 15th league goal of the season.
Luis Suarez missed a great opportunity to put the result beyond any doubt on the hour mark when he flashed wide after being found by Alba with another fine pass, but despite frequently testing Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Celta couldn't find the goal that would have put the Catalans under real pressure.

GRIEZMANN ON TARGET

Earlier, Griezmann smashed home from the spot 10 minutes after the break to give Diego Simeone's side three points from a hard-fought match with mid-table Espanyol that extended Atletico's unbeaten league run to 14 matches.
"It was important to win regardless of how we did it," said Atletico captain Diego Godin.
"We go into the (two-week) winter break happy with the three points."
The 27-year-old Griezmann, who missed out on a Ballon d'Or despite winning the Europa League with Atletico last season and the World Cup with France in the summer, is on a fine run of form after having saved his side with a late winner at Real Valladolid last week.
His winner on Saturday was his fourth in three games after bagging a brace last week and scoring in Atletico's 3-0 hammering of Alaves a fortnight ago.
"Antoine is an excellent goalscorer," added Godin. "He works for the team brilliantly and helps with his his goals."
Sevilla can join Atletico on 34 points with a win at struggling Leganes on Sunday.
