Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives stars 'licence to express', says Dwight Yorke

From the combative Roy Keane to the glamorous David Beckham and the trickery of George Best, Manchester United's heroes have all come with standout traits.
But breaking the mould is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the modest Norwegian who is doing wonders at Old Trafford in an unflashy manner, without donning a cape nor being a force of personality, according to former teammate Dwight Yorke.
"Ole's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet in football. He doesn't give you any drama, he just gets on with his job, he's totally professional in what he does," the 47-year-old ex-Trinidad and Tobago international striker said yesterday in reply to The Straits Times' question on whether Solskjaer's managerial brilliance was evident during his playing days.
"I just didn't see him at this level.
"Like everything else, you need a little luck and fortune and he got that. You got to grasp these opportunities. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him."
Yorke was speaking on the sidelines at the launch of this year's International Champions Cup (ICC) Singapore at the Incubator, near the Padang.
On July 20, the Red Devils will take on Inter Milan and a day later, Juventus will meet Tottenham Hotspur.
British media has reported that Solskjaer is set for a permanent deal at Old Trafford this week and Yorke certainly believes the former striker is the right man to take United forward.

He said: "He has done a remarkable job, there is no question about that. The doubters who think that he wasn't capable of doing a job can pretty much eat their words now.
"May he continue to take the team forward. He's looking good, he's got the players playing with the passion and desire that we expect of a Man United player. That will be the case going forward."
Since Solskjaer took over on Dec 19 after Jose Mourinho's sacking, not only had he restored the team's competitive edge and playing style, he had also done so while smashing records.
He had won 14 out of 19 games, became the first United manager to win his first eight matches, surpassing Matt Busby's five, won a club record of nine consecutive away games and, by dumping Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League last 16, they became the first team in the tournament's history to advance after losing the first leg at home by two goals or more.
The key to the Red Devils' surge in form has been the caretaker's perceptive man-management skills, said Yorke.
He added: "I always think we have exceptional young players but these young players were not given the licence to express themselves, and expression is a word you associate a lot with Man United.
"When you just look at the talent that we have, nothing has changed.
"Our attackers (Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial) are as good as any other in the Premier League.
"It's about expressing themselves and exposing their talent. They have managed to do that under Ole."
Come July 20, Singapore fans will get the chance to watch the Red Devils express themselves, and fittingly, hear the classic chant "ole, ole" reverberate in the National Stadium.

EPL clubs to call for action on City over financial fair play
LONDON â€¢ At least a dozen top-flight clubs are planning to write to the Premier League to ask what action they intend to take over alleged breaches of financial fair play (FFP) by Manchester City.
In an unprecedented move, they intend to call on the league to clarify its position over the accusations.
The Times understands that a majority of clubs are already on board with the proposal and more were being asked to sign up on Thursday night. The development illustrates how scepticism over City's practices permeates beyond their immediate top-six rivals.
The news comes as European football governing body Uefa announced on Thursday a formal investigation into alleged FFP violations by City, stemming from information released in the Football Leaks data cache, but which the club strongly deny.
The Football Leaks website was set up in 2015 to reveal alleged corruption in football and has supplied documents to several European news outlets in the past four years. The latest leaked files suggest that City discussed a plan to pay Jadon Sancho's family Â£225,000 (S$400,200) before recruiting the England forward when he was a 14-year-old at Watford's academy.
The Times has learnt that Uefa has contacted France's financial prosecutor seeking access to millions of Football Leaks documents.
However, the club have dismissed as "entirely false" accusations they may have flouted FFP rules, issuing a statement that read: "Manchester City welcomes a formal Uefa investigation to bring an end to the speculation resulting from the illegal hacking and out-of-context publication of City e-mails.
"The accusation of financial irregularities are entirely false. The club's published accounts are complete, and a matter of legal and regulatory record."
Uefa's club financial control body said its investigation would "focus on alleged violations of FFP that were made public in various media outlets".
However, City cannot allow off-field matters to distract them from their task at hand, which would be to temporarily establish a four-point lead over nearest Premier League challengers Liverpool, who have 70 points and host Burnley a day later.
Today, Pep Guardiola's men are gunning for their fifth straight league victory against Watford, who are also enjoying a decent spell with four wins in five games.
There will be a reunion for the Spaniard with Gerard Deulofeu, his former Barcelona forward.
The Hornets' in-form player, with four assists and five goals since December, remains very grateful for the opportunities that Guardiola gave him.
But he wants to impress against the English champions at their Etihad Stadium so that he can take a step closer towards his "objective, (which) is to play for a top team".

LONDON (AFP) - Fulham's bid to avoid relegation from the English Premier League suffered a fresh setback as Wolves rescued a late 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage on Wednesday (Dec 26).
Ryan Sessegnon came off the bench to put struggling Fulham ahead with just a quarter of an hour left.
But Romain Saiss hit an 85th-minute equaliser to spoil Fulham's hopes of bolstering their survival bid.
Claudio Ranieri's side temporarily climbed off the bottom of the table, one point ahead of Huddersfield before the rest of the Boxing Day schedule.
But Fulham have claimed just six points from seven games since former Leicester boss Ranieri took charge.
That concerning run had left them bottom on Christmas Day - with only three of the previous 26 top-flight teams to have filled that spot going on to avoid relegation.
This was another tale of woe for the Cottagers.
Wolves threatened early on in the form of a spectacular Raul Jimenez bicycle kick that flashed over.
Fulham survived strong penalty appeals from the visitors as Denis Odoi appeared to handle a high ball into the area.
Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has seven Premier League goals this season, was causing constant problems for Wolves but his finishing let him down.
The Serb was on the end of a Cyrus Christie cross but headed straight at Rui Patricio.
Christie then shot low across goal and Mitrovic was agonisingly close to turning the ball in at the far post.
Mitrovic should have scored five minutes before the break.
Taking a touch, he turned his marker and went past another Wolves defender, only to produce a tame effort that Patricio saved with ease.
Fulham snatched the lead in the 74th minute when Patricio made a weak attempt to punch clear from Alfie Mawson's header and the ball dropped to Sessegnon, whose shot crossed the line before Wolves could clear.
That would have taken the Cottagers off the bottom, but Wolves rescued a point.
Ivan Cavaleiro's low cross was not dealt with by Fulham's Joe Bryan and Saiss arrived at the far post to slot home his first Premier League goal.
Mitrovic should have won it in stoppage time, but his effort was cleared off the line by Conor Coady.

For over an hour yesterday, it had looked as though they might blink in their staring contest with Liverpool. Something had to give and Pep Guardiola's players certainly toyed with the emotions of their supporters during those passages of play when they lacked their usual sureness of touch.
Except, this is the team whose fans like to sing how they will "fight to the end" and, lest it be forgotten, once won the league with the final kick of the season back in 2012.
City even have a bar at the Etihad called "The 93:20" to commemorate Sergio Aguero's contribution on that occasion - he scored the winner then - and seven years on, the Argentina striker is still delivering vital goals and showing he remains the man for the big occasion.
His 63rd-minute strike at Turf Moor meant he joins Alan Shearer as the only two players in the Premier League era to score 20 times or more in six different seasons.
City have now won 12 consecutive league games, restoring their one-point lead over Liverpool.

Sergio Aguero is the second player in Premier League history to score more than 20 goals in five straight seasons, after Arsenal's Thierry Henry (2002 to 2006).

If they can extend that sequence to 14 in their last two games by beating Leicester at home and then Brighton away, there will be nothing Jurgen Klopp and his players can do about it.
Aguero's winner against Burnley was not without drama. He had held off James Tarkowski in the box before striking at goal.
Fellow defender Matthew Lowton blocked the ball on the line and, briefly, play carried on.
But there was a reason why referee Paul Tierney felt a buzz on his wristband. It was the goal-line technology letting him know that the momentum of the ball had taken it over the line. Twenty-nine millimetres, to be precise.
Afterwards, Aguero cheekily referenced how "today I was happy about the technology" in contrast to how the Video Assistant Referee had denied them passage to the Champions League semi-finals almost two weeks ago. He added: "I am very happy with the goal because in the first half, we had a lot of chances and now we have a week to prepare for the next games."
For the first time in months, City's elimination from the Champions League means they will crucially have a free midweek to prepare for those key matches.
By contrast, Liverpool must travel to Newcastle next weekend, either side of the two legs of their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, before hosting Wolves on May 12.
Sean Dyche's side knew before kick-off they were mathematically certain of Premier League survival, yet played as if they, too, were fighting for the title.

SINGAPORE - It may be still early days in the 2019 Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, but a marker could be laid down in the clash of title contenders Tampines Rovers and last year's unbeaten champions Albirex Niigata at Our Tampines Hub on Friday (March 29).
In a reversal of roles, it is the Stags who are marching relentlessly while the White Swans are struggling for rhythm.
League leaders Tampines, on a maximum nine points after three games, can open up an 11-point gap over Albirex, who have one point from two games.
Second-placed Brunei DPMM FC, on seven points from three games, are not in action until they play the Stags on April 7.
But Tampines' head coach-in-waiting Gavin Lee does not think this Irrepressibles versus Invincibles fixture will have a huge bearing on the title race.
He said: "This is just the fourth game for us and the third for Albirex. There are 20 more games to go and anything can happen. This season is going to be a close race."
Under the former Warriors FC assistant coach, the Stags have won their first three games through their brand of high pressing and passing football, scoring a league high 11 goals and conceding twice.

In stark contrast, Albirex, champions for the past three seasons, have yet to bulge the net in the SPL this year.
The Japanese club's coach Keiji Shigetomi feels that "every game is important", but his focus is on drilling his players to find the target.
He said: "We didn't have the ability to score. That is why we did more attack training last week."
Lee is not taking anything for granted and he believes the White Swans are more dangerous when wounded.
He said: "Knowing the Japanese, they will work extremely hard to correct something if they didn't get it right the first time."
The Stags' early-season form had also earned left-back Irwan Shah and centre-back Amirul Adli national recalls six and four years respectively after their last international appearances.
The duo started in Singapore's two matches against Malaysia and Oman in the AirMarine Cup last week and Lee is looking for more from the rejuvenated duo.
He said: "I'm very happy and proud of them (Irwan and Amirul)... and there's going to a lot more coming from them as they will be motivated to get called up more often."

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - The Asian Football Confederation announced Tuesday (May 14) that for the first time an all-female referee team will take charge of a men's continental club cup clash.
Japanese referee Yoshimi Yamashita and assistants Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi will officiate the AFC Cup match between Myanmar's Yangon United and Cambodia's Naga World at the Thuwunna Stadium on Wednesday.
"This will be the first time three female referees preside in the Asian Football Confederation's club competitions, marking a new milestone in Asian refereeing," the AFC said in a statement.
The AFC Cup is the second-string Asian club competition, a rung below the AFC Champions League.
Women officials have only previously been employed as assistant referees in AFC Cup matches, with Australians Sarah Ho and Alysson Flynn becoming the first in 2014.
"This is one of my dreams," said the experienced Yamashita, who officiated in the 2016 and 2018 Fifa U-17 Women's World Cup and 2018 Women's Asian Cup.
"We've worked very hard and this is the result."

Assistant referee Teshirogi said her appointment will inspire female referees in Asia while Bozono said the experience will help in her preparations for the FIFA Women's World Cup in June, where the trio will be among 12 officials from the AFC.
"It is exciting to work with Yoshimi and Naomi. They are very experienced and have been very supportive. I will learn a lot from them," Bozono said.
