Football: Manchester City will not rest amid packed schedule

LONDON • Newcastle may be only two points above the relegation zone and are fighting for their Premier League survival, but Pep Guardiola has no intention of rotating his squad despite harder tests to come.
His Manchester City side, who are aiming to temporarily close the gap to leaders Liverpool to just one point, will have to deal with fixture congestion after their league trip to Everton was rescheduled to Feb 6.
The decision was taken following their progression to the League Cup final on Feb 24.
That visit to Goodison Park will be sandwiched between two home games in the league - against Arsenal on Feb 3 and Chelsea on Feb 10.
However, Guardiola claimed ahead of today's game at Newcastle that it was "a privilege" that City were still in the hunt for an unprecedented quadruple - the only English club capable of achieving the fabled feat this season.
The Spaniard said: "We have a lot of games, so no way (we will be resting). It is what it is. If you believe it's a handicap, that's a big mistake.
"When you are 35 years old, you can have long holidays. No problem, you will be retired. But for now, take it, enjoy it. Next one, win again. Play good, prepare well.
"That's the only way. After, you work for next season."
Guardiola also warned his side any complacency at St James' Park would be punished by Rafa Benitez's men as "no team is safe going there". He added: "We will go (to Tyneside) first and then, it's time to think about Arsenal. Next game is the important one."
Separately, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea also urged caution over growing optimism that the club are in the driver's seat to clinch a top-four place this term.
Their perfect record - eight wins in eight games - under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought renewed hope to the Old Trafford faithful, but de Gea felt the team, who are three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, still had a "difficult" task.
Speaking ahead of their home game against Burnley, he told Sky Sports: "We're happy with the wins, but aren't satisfied with the overall situation. This is a club that should be fighting for the title."

Glowing start for Stags' import

In the short span of 2 1/2 months and two games, Zehrudin Mehmedovic has proved that he could turn out to be an astute signing and key player for Tampines Rovers in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) this season.
Despite the language barrier, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder has settled down well with the Stags, scoring two goals in their last two games against Yangon United (3-1 win in the AFC Cup Group F opener) and Hougang United (5-1 win in SPL opener) last week.
"I'm very pleased that I played a part in helping the team win. We played two strong teams so I feel proud that I played a part in the two victories," said the Serb, who can speak only basic English.
He was brought in by Tampines' assistant coach Fahrudin Mustafic, who said: "He's a young player, but he's very creative. These days, there aren't many No. 10 players who can give you quality final passes and can receive the ball around the box and score.
"So he adds that extra quality and he's doing well so far.
"It's a huge step for him to come to a foreign country, but he has been training hard and showing signs of improvement."
While he acknowledged that the young player still has a long way to go, he believes that if Mehmedovic continues to work hard, he can stamp his mark on the SPL.

MULTI-SKILLED
These days, there aren't many No. 10 players who can give you quality final passes and can receive the ball around the box and score. So he adds that extra quality and he's doing well so far.

PARIS • Paris Saint-Germain may have clinched their long-expected sixth Ligue 1 title in the past seven seasons, but that triumph cannot mask the French club's shortcomings on the European stage where results have failed to match their huge investments.
Thomas Tuchel's side claimed the title without kicking a ball yesterday after second-placed Lille were held to a goal-less draw at Toulouse. PSG have 81 points after 32 games and cannot be caught as they lead Lille, who have played one more game, by 16 points with five games remaining. PSG hosted Monaco this morning (Singapore time).
Even the prospect of another domestic double - PSG play Stade Rennes in the French Cup final on Saturday - cannot soothe the pain felt by fans at seeing their galacticos team fall again at the last-16 hurdle in the Champions League.
Having spent over €1 billion (S$1.52 billion) on players since Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) took over the club in 2011, including the likes of Thiago Silva, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, PSG have not got past the quarter-finals of Europe's elite club competition since 1995.
In the past three seasons, they have gone out in the last 16 after squandering a four-goal lead against Barcelona in 2017 and a two-goal away advantage against Manchester United this year.
Tuchel, who replaced Unai Emery this season, also could not manage a domestic treble which the Spaniard and France World Cup-winner Laurent Blanc achieved.
PSG can argue that bad luck struck as Neymar suffered a foot injury before the Champions League knockout phase but, like last year, they have not addressed several weaknesses including the need to develop a winning mentality. Just ask Dani Alves.

Tuchel and the PSG management also failed to resolve Adrien Rabiot's situation, with the gifted midfielder being left out of the squad for most of the season over a contractual dispute.
With Blaise Matuidi having departed for Juventus in 2017, Tuchel has often had to play Marquinhos alongside Marco Verratti in midfield, although the Brazilian is probably his best central defender and PSG have suffered by conceding some soft goals.
Tuchel also failed to appoint a clear No. 1 goalkeeper, with France international Alphonse Areola and Italian great Gianluigi Buffon swopping roles throughout the season.
Buffon made a rookie mistake that led to Romelu Lukaku's goal when United won their last-16 second leg 3-1 in Paris, a damaging result that left PSG's expensive squad still chasing their elusive Champions League dream.

SINGAPORE - After barely a quarter of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, Home United are the first team to wield the axe as they announced the mutual termination of head coach Saswadimata Dasuki's contract on Friday (April 19).
In a media statement, the Protectors revealed that assistant coach Noh Rahman will take over on an interim basis as the club are in the process of appointing a new head coach.
They added: "Home United Football Club and head coach Saswadimata Dasuki have come to a mutual agreement to part ways with immediate effect.
"HUFC would like to thank Saswa for his contributions, having joined the club as assistant coach in 2017, and being appointed head coach for the 2019 season.
"During his stint at HUFC, Saswa brought honours to the club, including the recent Community Shield. We thank Saswa for his work at HUFC and wish him the best for his future endeavours."
It is understood that one of the contributing factors behind this decision is the club's poor results as Home languish in seventh position in the nine-team SPL.
Despite being touted as one of the title contenders, they have won just two out of six league games and lost 5-1 to Tampines Rovers, and 1-0 to Brunei DPMM and Hougang United as they struggled with injuries and poor form.

 
In the AFC Cup, they are currently second in Group H with seven points after four games, one point behind Indonesia's PSM Makassar, but with a poor goal difference of minus-three.
It was in this second-tier regional competition last year that Saswadimata enjoyed his greatest coaching success when he was assistant to Aidil Sharin as the Protectors emerged Asean Zonal winners.
The 49-year-old former Singapore international declined comment.
Noh Rahman, who was a strength and conditioning coach with the Football Association of Singapore before he joined Home this year, will face fourth-placed Geylang International on April 24 in his first test since taking over the reins.
The 38-year-old former Lion said: "It is never a nice feeling, standing in a position of a colleague whom you have worked with since the start of the season.
"As for my plans and goals, just like the rest of the technical staff, we and the players have an obligation and responsibility to continue where Saswa left off. And that is to improve the individual performance and subsequently the team performance, at least until the new coach comes in.
"We have got some days to prepare for the next game and then it will be one game every three to four days. It is a big challenge, but we need to approach this positively."

LONDON • Manchester City are set to be banned by Fifa from making signings in the next two transfer windows after they broke rules related to the protection of youth players and third-party ownership, according to a report in The Sun.
The club are already being investigated by the Football Association and the Premier League over allegations related to youth transfers and Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
Uefa is also looking into potential breaches of FFP, an investigation that could result in City being banned from playing in the Champions League.
A transfer ban for the English champions would come less than a month after Chelsea were hit with the same sanction for 29 breaches of Article 19 of Fifa's regulations on the transfer and status of players.
Fifa has been investigating City's international transfers for several years. According to The Sun, Fifa believes City have crossed the line with regard to their relationship with Nordsjaelland and the Right To Dream football academy in Ghana that is also owned by the Danish club's president, Tom Vernon.
Last year, two players from the academy, Sierra Leone's George Davies and Ghanaian Dominic Oduro, told Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten that they signed for City and played in youth matches before they turned 18. Both have since left the Etihad.
That investigation was broadened later last year when another Danish newspaper, Politiken, published a story that said City had a secret deal with Vernon to have first refusal on the best prospects from Right to Dream.
If true, that would be a breach of the rules preventing the third-party ownership of players.
Neither Fifa nor City were available for comment on Thursday.

If Getafe win, they will also move five points ahead of Valencia, whose chances of snatching fourth place and Champions League qualification would now appear remote.
But there will be some satisfaction at least for Atletico in making Barcelona win it on their own terms while also avoiding the embarrassment of conceding the title with a loss in front of their home fans.
Angel Correa's stunning strike in the 81st minute proved the winner after Valencia had fought back, Kevin Gameiro and a Dani Parejo penalty twice pulling them level after goals from Morata and Griezmann.
Morata's early strike continued his excellent form since his move to Atletico in January, his finish at the back post taking his tally to six goals in 13 games for the club.
Griezmann, meanwhile, back from suspension, now has 25 goals in all competitions this season, an impressive return, particularly in a side not renowned for its creativity.
Atletico were ahead inside 10 minutes as Juanfran's cross met the outstretched foot of Morata at the back post.
It was no less than they deserved for an aggressive opening but Valencia grew into the half and equalised shortly before half-time.
Francis Coquelin's crossfield pass picked out Carlos Soler, who cushioned inside to Santi Mina. Mina flicked the ball brilliantly between Diego Godin and Stefan Savic before squaring to Gameiro, who had time to pick his spot.
Atletico regrouped during the interval and were back in front four minutes after, Griezmann jumping ahead of Jose Gaya to nod in Thomas Lemar's cross.
But Valencia came again and a chaotic contest took another twist when Gameiro's shot was shown by VAR to have been blocked by the arm of Saul Niguez. Parejo powered into the corner.
The game was in the balance as Griezmann glanced a header wide before Correa, on as a substitute, provided the winning touch. Thomas Partey played into his feet but Correa did the rest, turning, twisting and then bending the ball inside Neto's left-hand post. Barca will have to wait.
