Football: European leagues wrestle with racism after French Ligue 1 abuse adds to litany of woes

PARIS (AFP) - The interruption of the Dijon-Amiens Ligue 1 match on Friday (April 12) after visiting captain Prince Gouano was the target of monkey chants adds to a string of recent racist incidents across Europe.
It comes after rising Italy star Moise Kean was targeted by racist abuse in Cagliari in Serie A earlier in the month.
Monkey chants were aimed at England players during a Euro 2020 qualifier in Montenegro and there has been a series of episodes involving London clubs.
"Racism exists in the stadiums in France, but we cannot put the situation on the same level as in Eastern European countries or Italy," football sociologist Nicolas Hourcade, a professor at the Central School of Lyon, told AFP.
The goal-less draw in Dijon was halted in the 78th minute as players from both sides stopped playing and headed towards the touchline after Gouano said he heard insults.
"It's over," he said. "We're not playing on. I'm taking off my team-mates."
Players including Gouano went to remonstrate with fans.
Referee Karim Abed also asked the stadium announcer to "get the message across, if it happens again, we stop"
Following discussions between players, coaches and officials, play then resumed.
"In Dijon, we saw that it was an isolated supporter who could be identified and arrested," Hourcade said.
"In other countries, there are collective demonstrations where a whole section of the ground, or a good part of one, can shout monkey chants or racist slogans."
After the game, the French league (LFP) said it would investigate and also announced that Dijon had identified the culprit. The club said it intended to press charges.
"These disgusting shouts are contrary to the values conveyed by sport, they insult our Republic, and I welcome the rapid reaction of the LFP: racism will never have a place in France," responded Interior Minister Christophe Castaner.
Anti-racism campaigners urge abandoning matches.
"We do not tackle the subject of racism as we should," former France captain Lilian Thuram told AFP in 2018, after Blaise Matuidi suffered abuse when Juventus played at Cagliari.
"Why didn't the referee stop the match, why didn't the white players leave the field?"
"If there is no deal with the problem, it will be the same thing in 20 years," he said.
Yet the same thing did happen when Juventus played at Cagliari on April 2. Kean, along with Matuidi and Brazilian Alex Sandro, were targeted by monkey noises and jeers throughout the match.

'Openly fascist'

Instead of denouncing their fans, Cagliari's leadership blamed Kean for celebrating his late winner by standing motionless and silent with arms spread in front of the hostile stand.
"Italy is a case apart for two reasons," Hourcade said. "The historical strength of the extreme right, and the presence of openly fascist fan organisations."
But in England too, there have been numerous recent incidents at all levels of football.
On Thursday, half a dozen Chelsea fans posted a video on social media in which they sang that Liverpool's Egyptian star, Mohamed Salah, was a "bomber". Chelsea identified and barred three of the fans.
Arsenal are attempting to identify a fan who was caught on video shouting racist abuse at Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli in a Europa League game on Thursday.
In December, Manchester City's Raheem Sterling was the target of insults at Chelsea and a Tottenham fan threw a banana in the direction of Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
One of the major issues is "to identify the perpetrators of these acts to punish them", said Hourcade.

LONDON (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp has condemned "disgusting" racist abuse aimed at Mohamed Salah and called for lifetime bans for the Chelsea fans accused of taunting the Liverpool star.
A video circulated on social media ahead of Chelsea's Europa League match at Slavia Prague this week showed a group of six supporters chanting "Salah is a bomber" repeatedly.
Egypt forward Salah, who played for Chelsea before joining Roma in 2016, is a practising Muslim and has previously faced abuse about his religion.
Chelsea's security staff identified three people in the widely shared video and denied that trio entry to Thursday's clash in Prague.
It is understood that the remaining three people in the video did not attempt to enter Slavia's Sinobo Stadium for Chelsea's 1-0 quarter-final first-leg victory.
Liverpool said the video showed "vile discriminatory chants" and was "dangerous and disturbing", while Chelsea issued a statement pledging to use all available punishments against those involved.
The incident is especially sensitive as Liverpool host Chelsea on Sunday in a match with huge implications in the Premier League title race and the battle to finish in the top four.
Asked about the latest incident of racism in football this season, Klopp made it clear the behaviour should not be tolerated.
"It's disgusting. Another example of something which should not happen. We should not see it as a Chelsea or Liverpool thing," Klopp told reporters on Friday (April 12).
"If you do something like that you should not be able to enter a stadium again, from my point of view, for life," he added.
Four Chelsea supporters were suspended by the club for allegedly abusing Raheem Sterling during Manchester City's defeat at Stamford Bridge on Dec 8.
Chelsea also criticised anti-Semitic chanting by Blues fans during the club's 2-2 Europa League draw at Hungarian side MOL Vidi on Dec 13.
Klopp believes life bans from stadiums are the only appropriate punishment for anyone found guilty of racism.
"The stronger the reaction from all of us, the more it will help to avoid things like this in the future," he said.
The German manager believes football authorities, clubs and players must unite with one voice to condemn such actions and make a stand together.
"It is a complete misunderstanding of how life should be - all parts of racism are that some people think they are more worthy or valuable than others and that's the biggest misunderstanding in the world out there," he said.
"Football is the best example of how people from different races can work together brilliantly.
"Go into any dressing room in the world and you see players sitting next to each other, and nobody cares where you come from or who your parents are.
"Because football is very public we talk a lot about this so I think we pretty much have a strong voice and we have to use that strong voice and say altogether things like this are not allowed to happen again."

LONDON â€¢ Former Liverpool manager-turned-pundit Graeme Souness has blasted Maurizio Sarri's decision to recall Kepa Arrizabalaga but, as far as the Chelsea manager is concerned, the Spaniard has "paid the price" for his insubordination.
Kepa returned to Sarri's starting XI after being dropped for the previous game against Tottenham following his infamous refusal to be substituted in the League Cup final defeat by Manchester City.
While the Spain goalkeeper produced a fine display in the Blues' 2-1 Premier League win at Fulham on Sunday, Souness felt the Italian had sent out the wrong message to his squad by reinstating Kepa, insisting he should have "left him out of this game and beyond".
He told Sky Sports: "It was a sad reflection on where we are with the modern player. He's 24, done nothing in the game and feels he can challenge the manager like that."
However, Sarri insisted that Kepa had justified his selection by helping the team move to 56 points and within two of fourth spot in the race for Champions League football and the "situation was closed".
He told Sky: "We were trying to involve Tottenham in the (top-four) fight and now they are involved. Better two teams for four places than three for one place. He played very well, it was a normal decision (to bring him back). There wasn't another way, but Kepa is a man. He understood and reacted really very well. He made a mistake, but now that is enough."
Kepa played his part at Craven Cottage, keeping out efforts from Aleksandar Mitrovic, Tom Cairney and Joe Bryan as his side recorded a second straight league win courtesy of goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Jorginho.
Sarri was especially delighted for the latter, who has borne the brunt of criticism from Chelsea fans for being an underwhelming presence in midfield and having not previously found the net from open play.
He added: "My opinion about Jorginho is the same. He is a great player, one of the most important in Europe in that position.
"He is not at his top level physically, but could have scored three times today. In a couple of weeks, he will be at his top."

Not only are Qatar enjoying their highest position in 26 years, they are now ahead of Mohamed Salah's Egypt and Africa Cup of Nations champions Cameroon.
The team returned home to a rapturous welcome from tens of thousands of ecstatic fans, including Qatar's ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who has reportedly rewarded the footballers handsomely for bringing joy to the people at a time of simmering political tension in the Gulf.
Qataris did not travel to the United Arab Emirates, which hosted the Cup, as the country is currently under a blockade led by its neighbours, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, who have accused Doha of supporting terrorism - a charge it has denied.
According to an article published on Fox Sports Asia's website, which cited Iranian media reports and a now-deleted tweet by Iranian football writer Sina Saemian, Al Thani has lavished gifts on every player.
They reportedly included a London apartment, a Â£2 million (S$3.5 million) cash reward, a monthly salary for the rest of their lives, a Lexus car and a luncheon hosted at his royal residence.
While some have questioned the country's recent triumph, claiming it has come out of the blue, former Barcelona great Xavi Hernandez believes the Cup win was deserved as the Qatar Football Association (QFA) had kept the 2022 World Cup hosts "on the right track".
The former Spain midfielder, who now plies his trade in Qatar as Al Sadd's captain, told TV channel Al Kass Sport: "Now you see the results produced by the Qatari team. It is a great team now. I am proud to work with these young players.
"We must remember that the QFA has been preparing this team for years to win this title.
"The Aspire Academy project is the idea of Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and the idea is now achieving great success. What Aspire has done is to prepare a platform for the emergence of players that we currently see on the pitch."
Thirteen out of Qatar's 22-strong Cup squad had links with Aspire, and Xavi has been frequently seen helping out at the academy when he is not tied up with his club commitments.

SINGAPORE - He was unveiled as Singapore football's new national coach on Thursday (May 30) but Tatsuma Yoshida wasted little time in stressing that teamwork within the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) will be crucial to leading the Lions to success.
The 44-year-old is the first Japanese as well as the youngest coach in this millennium to lead the Republic. He has been appointed on a two-year deal and replaces V. Sundram Moorthy, who was the last permanent Singapore coach before he vacated the post in April 2018.
Since then, former national captains Fandi Ahmad and Nazri Nasir have both served on an interim and caretaker basis.
Yoshida's first assignments will be the upcoming international home friendlies against Solomon Islands (June 8) and Myanmar (June 11).
Speaking at a press conference at the Jalan Besar Stadium, where the FAS is based, Yoshida said: "I am honoured to be appointed Singapore's national team coach and thankful for the trust that FAS has placed in me. This position bears heavy responsibilities which I will undertake with commitment and pride.
"While I am aware that this is no easy task, I believe in the potential that Singapore football has to reach greater heights and success on the international stage and look forward to embarking on this journey with the players and fans.
"Teamwork is crucial in order for us to succeed which is why I am pleased to have local legends like (national Under-22 coach) Fandi and Nazri on board this journey. The synergy in my partnership with Fandi will be of utmost importance as the Under-22 team is critical to the long-term objectives of the national team."

The FAS earlier in May appointed 53-year-old Australian Joseph Palatsides as its new technical director after BelgianÂ Michel Sablon stepped down in December 2018.
FAS president Lim Kia Tong said Yoshida will be assisted by Nazri, who served as caretaker coach for two games earlier this year.
Lim said: "We decided to shift our search within Asia. I spoke to the Japan FA president and sought his help in recommendation. Tatsuma comes highly recommended by their technical department.

Born in Chiba prefecture, Yoshida was a central midfielder and started his playing career with hometown club Kashiwa Reysol before turning out for Kyoto Sanga and Montedio Yamagata.
In 2002, he signed for Jurong FC and played under Sundram, then player-coach for the Cobras.
After hanging up his boots that year, Yoshida returned to Reysol, where he rose through the ranks from youth-team coach to technical director and then the head coach. While at Reysol, he helped to produce some national players like Marseille right-back Hiroki Sakai.
However, he then lasted just one season each as head coach of Reysol (2015) and Albirex Niigata (2016). His last head coach assignment was at Ventforet Kofu from 2017 to last year, and has no previous experience helming a national team.

LONDON â€¢ The family of Emiliano Sala are in danger of missing out on up to Â£600,000 (S$1 million) in compensation for his death because Cardiff made an error in registering his contract with the English Premier League.
The league returned the paperwork to the club asking for corrections, and for the Argentinian striker to sign the forms again.
But, before he was able to do so, the 28-year-old died when the light aircraft carrying him from France crashed into the English Channel on Jan 21, three days after he had become their club-record Â£15 million signing from Nantes.
The error could be significant because players automatically become part of the Professional Footballers' Association's (PFA) pension scheme as soon as they are registered with the league, and that provides a Â£600,000 death-in-service payment to their families.
But the PFA is expected to press for the pension fund to honour the payment as Sala had signed a contract with Cardiff on Jan 18. Union officials hope that will be enough to secure a payment to his family.
PFA deputy chief executive John Bramhall said: "It will be for the trustees to see whether they are able to make the payment from there. Normally, it would be a simple process, but we will be speaking with them on this. Usually, as soon as a contract is registered with the Premier League, the player is enrolled on the pension scheme."
The PFA had been unaware of any issues over the paperwork, but it is understood that the registration documents were returned to Cardiff by the league asking for corrections to be made.
The league registration is separate to the International Transfer Certificate, which was completed after Sala's move. That was registered with the Football Association of Wales and confirmed him as a Cardiff player, leaving the club liable to pay Nantes the transfer fee.

CONTRACT COMPLICATIONS
Usually, as soon as a contract is registered with the Premier League, the player is enrolled on the pension scheme.
JOHN BRAMHALL, Professional Footballers' Association deputy chief executive, on the contract Emiliano Sala signed with Cardiff.

There is hope that Sala's family will receive the Â£600,000 as the league's rules state that "immediately on signing this contract, the player shall be enrolled as... a member of the 2011 Section of the Professional Footballers' Pension Scheme and shall remain so during his employment".
This suggests that as Sala had signed his contract with Cardiff, his membership could be said to have started then rather than at the point the contract would have been registered with the league.
Cardiff did not respond when asked to comment, but they have frozen any payments to Nantes on the grounds that they want the outcome of the investigation into the crash to be completed first.
