Strong support for 48 teams in Qatar but issues remain
DOHA • A "majority" of football federations support increasing the number of teams playing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from 32 to 48, Fifa president Gianni Infantino said in Doha on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference after a three-day Fifa summit, which was attended by more than 70 federations, he revealed that the plan enjoyed widespread backing from different associations, but admitted there were doubts about its "feasibility".
"We will see," Infantino said. "So far, of course the majority is in favour because 16 more teams can participate, not only means 16 more countries with World Cup fever, but also 50 or 60 more countries being able to dream."
A decision will be made in March at Fifa's next council meeting, after a feasibility study is completed.
The world football governing body has backed a 48-team tournament to become the norm from 2026, when the World Cup takes place in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
But, with the 2022 host "open" to the idea of a 48-team tournament, Infantino is considering implementing the changes earlier.
He said: "Of course, the first partner with whom we are speaking to is the Qataris, the Qatar federation, the Qatari authorities."
However, any decision to extend the showpiece event would be beset by logistical and political problems.
The first World Cup to be held in the Middle East will take place over 28 days, not the usual 32 and, according to Infantino, the length of the tournament is set in stone.
Since the number of days cannot be changed, one option would be to host games across the region.
Yet that possibility seems remote as Qatar is at the centre of the worst diplomatic crisis to hit the Persian Gulf in years.
Since June last year, the country has been politically and economically isolated by its neighbours, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
They have accused Qatar of supporting terrorism and being too close to Iran.
Doha has denied the charges, claiming its former allies are seeking to instigate a regime change and Infantino is well aware the embargo could prove problematic.
"Of course I am not that naive, not to know, not to read the news about what is going on. But we are in football, we are not in politics," he added.

Football: Blackpool fan protests on roof of Arsenal team bus

BLACKPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Arsenal's team bus was briefly delayed on the way to their 3-0 FA Cup third round win at Blackpool on Saturday (Jan 5) after a home fan climbed onto its roof in protest at the Lancashire seaside club's owners.
The fan was photographed sitting on top of the coach at Arsenal's team hotel shortly before the London side were to depart for the 1730 GMT kickoff (3.30am on Sunday, Singapore time) at Bloomfield Road.
Supporters of third-tier Blackpool have regularly protested against club owner Owen Oyston and many are boycotting home games with gates averaging only 4,129 at their 17,000-seater ground which hosted Premier League football in 2010-11.
The protest did not last long, according to the BBC, and the Arsenal team arrived in good time for kickoff.
Despite fears of more protests, the tie was incident-free as Arsenal cruised to victory with teenager Joe Willock scoring twice and Alex Iwobi once.
What could have been a tough assignment for Arsenal against a side who caused a scare in their League Cup clash earlier this season ended up being a comfortable outing with a sparse home crowd outsung by the Arsenal following.
The 19-year-old Willock became the youngest Arsenal player to score in an FA Cup tie since Aaron Ramsey in 2010.
His day could have been even better but a linesman's flag ruled out a hat-trick goal.
"It's a brilliant day for me on a personal note but I'm proud of how we did as a team as well. I don't think the scoreline reflects how well we played," he said.
"The linesman crushed my dreams with the hat-trick but that's football and hopefully I can get another opportunity soon. Hopefully the boss keeps believing in me."

MADRID • There was little sign of Barcelona's swashbuckling attacking play in their 1-0 LaLiga win at Real Madrid on Saturday as the team renowned for goalscoring produced a rare masterclass in defending, led by Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique.
Ivan Rakitic scored the decisive goal in a cagey Clasico that lacked the drama associated with the fixture, sending the table-toppers 12 points clear of third-placed Real.
The victory, coming hot on the heels of last week's 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu in the second leg of their King's Cup semi-final, was mostly down to the steeliness of their central defensive pair, who blocked seven shots between them, forming a human shield in front of goal.
"Every time Madrid attacked us, Pique or Lenglet cleared the danger, I had very little work to do because of them," said Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
"We fought and suffered in the last half-hour, (but) we defended as a team. You always suffer a bit at the Bernabeu, but we know we have a great team and we fought hard for the victory.
"The last few years have been very good here, we've had a lot of success here and I hope it stays that way."
Rakitic added: "We worked very hard for this victory and we deserve it. Sometimes, you have to fight, you have to stick your leg in and we are very happy."
Pique led jubilant celebrations in the middle of the pitch after the full-time whistle, but later warned that the league title was not in the bag despite "having made a real statement".
The former Spain international told reporters: "We knew how to suffer. We weren't celebrating the league title because Atletico (Madrid) are still there.
"It's been a perfect week and we should celebrate it, but we haven't won the league yet, not at all, it's not definitive."
However, his manager Ernesto Valverde all but wrote off Real's title ambitions after Barcelona overtook them in their head-to-head record for the first time in 87 years, with 96 victories to 95.
The Spaniard claimed his side had "delivered our best and inflicted damage on our rival".
Real No. 1 Thibaut Courtois also conceded they "lacked accuracy" in the two games against the Spanish champions.
The Belgium goalkeeper said: "To win games, you need to score goals and we didn't do that. We couldn't play the final pass and they saved themselves a couple of times, the ball just didn't want to go in."
His coach Santiago Solari was equally despondent after Real slumped to their third straight home loss for the first time since 2004, admitting "sometimes, everything doesn't go for you".
And former Real manager Jose Mourinho predicted things would get worse for the European champions as they "are (now) on a low".
He told beIN Sports: "It was not a happy performance. It was not the performance of a happy team. It was not the performance of a team with great belief and self-esteem.
"It's just a soft performance... against the top teams, you have to do much more than this if you want to win."

Football: Paul Scholes charged by FA for alleged betting breaches

LONDON (REUTERS) - Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the Football Association's betting rules, the English governing body said on Tuesday (April 16).
It is alleged that the 44-year-old former England international placed 140 bets on football matches between August 2015 and January 2019, the FA said in a statement.
The period covers when Scholes was a part-owner of non-league side Salford City, but before his appointment as Oldham manager in February 2019.
"Paul Scholes has been charged with misconduct in relation to The FA's Betting Rules," the FA statement read.
Scholes' spell in charge of Oldham started brightly with a win, but he failed to pick up another victory in his next six games and left with the side languishing in 14th place in the fourth tier.
Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies during a glittering playing career with United, resigned as a club director at Salford, while retaining his 10 per cent stake, before taking the Oldham job.
He recently left his role as manager of League Two outfit Oldham Athletic after only 31 days in charge.
He has until April 26 to respond to the FA charge.

Representatives of Scholes could not immediately be reached for comment.

Football: One year on, Coutinho struggling to justify record move to Barca

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Barcelona shelled out a club record €160 million (S$250 million) to prise Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, yet one year on from his signing, the Brazilian is struggling to get a game while his former side are thriving in his absence.
Coutinho, the third most expensive player in the world behind Paris St Germain's Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, made a flying start to his Barcelona career with 10 goals in his first five months, giving the team a more direct outlet in midfield and an extra threat with his impressive long-range shooting.
But his impact has waned. He has failed to start any of the La Liga leaders' last three league games, falling behind Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal and French forward Ousmane Dembele in the pecking order.
Coach Ernesto Valverde has stopped short of publicly criticising the player, and neglected to say whether he had a preference for Coutinho or Dembele, the club's second most expensive acquisition at 105 million euros.
"It's a long way from being a problem having them both. It's an advantage," Valverde said last month.
"The coach is pro-Barca, he wants the team to win."
Valverde's recent team selections, however, may offer a clue to his thinking.
Â
Â
There was no place for Coutinho when Valverde fielded an unorthodox 3-5-2 formation in the recent 5-0 hammering of Levante, while he also left the Brazilian out when playing his usual 4-3-3 shape in victories over Espanyol and Celta Vigo.
The coach did pick Coutinho for a visit to Rayo Vallecano in November, but when he saw his side losing 2-1 at one of the weakest teams in the top flight, he hauled off the Brazilian and later brought on Dembele, who scored as Barca pulled off a dramatic 3-2 victory.
In the last three league outings, Valverde has continued to show faith in Dembele, despite the French youngster running into trouble for turning up late to training.
With the lightning quick forward forming a blistering attacking trident with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, and the highly-experienced Vidal slotting comfortably into the midfield three, Coutinho has been forced to make do with cameo appearances from the bench.
It is quite the fall from grace for a player many believed was signed as the long-term successor to Andres Iniesta, who ended 16 trophy-laden seasons with Barca last May to see out his career in Japan.
With Liverpool sitting four points clear at the top of the Premier League, Coutinho may be wondering on Sunday's anniversary of his transfer from Anfield to the Nou Camp whether it was quite the dream move he had imagined at the time.

Barca stroll to their 26th LaLiga title

MADRID • Barcelona may yet prove that they are the best team in Europe this season, but they are indisputably the best in Spain after wrapping up their fourth LaLiga title in five years and 26th overall on Saturday.
After beating Levante 1-0 at home, thanks to substitute Lionel Messi's 34th league goal of the term to take an unassailable nine-point lead over Atletico Madrid at the top of the table with three games to spare, the title race, in truth, has been a procession for the Catalan giants in recent history.
To put things into perspective, Real Madrid, who look set to finish a second consecutive season trailing the champions by double figures in terms of points, have now won the league only once in seven years.
But the faults of the Madrid clubs are not of Barca's doing, whose dominance of Spanish football was started by Pep Guardiola, consolidated under the late Tito Vilanova and Luis Enrique, and now cemented by Ernesto Valverde.
And, at the heart of their hegemony - having been crowned kings of Spain eight times in 11 years - lies one seminal figure: Messi.
Valverde's men, who celebrated their triumph with a lap of honour while wearing T-shirts bearing the slogan "Eight out of 11, the extraordinary seems normal", know that with their talismanic captain, anything is possible.
Hailing him as "the centre of all our successes", the Barca coach said: "It's obvious that while he has been at Barca, the club have won a glut of trophies and league titles.
"If I had to give a name above anyone else, it has to be his. He marks our style and his competitive drive pushes everyone else forward.
"He has to stay active and he scores goals everywhere he goes and he has won us this title."
Sergio Busquets, who along with Gerard Pique and Messi are the only surviving members of Guardiola's historic treble-winning team of 2009, also hailed the Argentina forward as the "best player in the world".
The Spain midfielder, who picked up his eighth league title at the Nou Camp, said: "Barcelona are a great club, but we have made Barca even greater. What we have done over the last years will go down in history."
Barcelona have taken the first step in their bid to win a third treble in a decade - Enrique's team swept all domestic honours in 2016.
After their Champions League semi-final against Liverpool - the first leg in Spain will take place on Wednesday - when they will be bidding to reach the final of Europe's premier club competition for the first time since 2015, Valencia stand between them and the King's Cup, with the final on May 25.
Having achieved their "main objective", Valverde now wants to close out their season with another historic treble.
The Spaniard said: "In the Champions League, we will face a really strong rival and, in the King's Cup, our opponent is improving."
Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic agreed, joking that while he "had a beer", the celebrations will "not go over the top" as there was more silverware on the line.
He added: "When we wake up tomorrow, we have to think about Liverpool, who have an incredible team and a brilliant coach."

Messi's first Barca title came in 2005 when he was 17 years old and he was also a fringe player when he collected his second La Liga medal a year later. Football: Jota treble fires Wolves to leave Puel under fire

LONDON (AFP) - Diogo Jota's hat-trick piled pressure on Leicester manager Claude Puel as the Wolves midfielder's last-gasp strike secured a thrilling 4-3 win on Saturday (Jan 19).
Nuno Espirito Santo's side blew a two-goal lead and then wasted a 3-2 advantage, but still finished with all three points in one of the Premier League's games of the season at Molineux.
Jota was Wolves' hero with his winner deep into stoppage-time, capping a dramatic finale that left Puel holding his head in disbelief at the final whistle.
This was a third successive defeat for Leicester, including an embarrassing FA Cup exit at minnows Newport, leaving Puel facing a fight to hold onto his job.
The Frenchman had already endured numerous reports that he was on borrowed time at the King Power Stadium amid reports of player and fan unrest.
Wolves were quickly into their stride and took the lead in the fourth minute when Joao Moutinho's cross picked out Jota and the Portugese midfielder guided a close-range volley past Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Jamie Vardy almost snatched an equaliser when Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio got his feet in a tangle, gifting possession to the Leicester forward before scrambling back to save at the last moment.
Ryan Bennett doubled Wolves' lead in the 12th minute, the defender rising above Harry Maguire to met Moutinho's corner with a bullet header for his first goal of the season.
Leicester pulled a goal back two minutes after the break as Vardy found Demarai Gray, who skipped past a challenge and fired home with a blistering strike.
Harvey Barnes, on his first Premier League start for Leicester, played the crucial role in the 52nd minute equaliser when the young midfielder's shot deflected in off Wolves defender Conor Coady for an own goal.
Wolves regained the lead in the 64th minute when Ruben Neves' pass sent Jota clear on goal and he chested down before drilling a shot that Schmeichel could only push into the net.
In the 87th minute, Wes Morgan charged onto James Maddison's free-kick and climbed above three Wolves defenders to thump a close-range header past Patricio.
But Jota had the last word in the third minute of stoppage-time as he raced onto Raul Jimenez's pass and slotted home with the Leicester defence completely out of position.
Jota's winner sparked wild celebrations from Santo, who ran onto the pitch to join his jubilant players, earning a dismissal in the process.

Football: Chelsea cruise past Dynamo Kiev, towards Europa League quarters

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea dominated Dynamo Kiev to take control of their Europa League last-16 tie as goals from Pedro Rodriguez, Willian and Callum Hudson-Odoi earned the hosts a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Thursday (March 7).
The Londoners may well need to win the competition to ensure a return to the Champions League next season as they sit sixth in the Premier League, and justified their tag as tournament favourites against the Ukrainians.
Pedro turned home an intricate backheel from Olivier Giroud to open the scoring on 17 minutes and only some wayward finishing and fine goalkeeping from Denys Boyko kept Kiev in the game before the break.
However, Willian's sweet free-kick and substitute Hudson-Odoi's late third gave the scoreline a fairer reflection of the 90 minutes.
A third straight victory maintains Chelsea's momentum and a much-needed turnaround from Maurizio Sarri, who seemed on the verge of the sack just a few weeks ago.
The Italian left Eden Hazard, N'Golo Kante and Gonzalo Higuain on the bench among six changes, but Chelsea still had far too much quality for the visitors to handle early on.
Pedro took his first clear chance by prodding through Boyko's legs, however the Spaniard should have had plenty more to show for his night's performance.
The former Barcelona winger side-footed a gilt-edged chance straight into Boyko's arms moments later before the Kiev 'keeper flew to his right to deny Pedro once more after he was picked out perfectly by a raking David Luiz pass.
Mykyta Burda then deflected Marcos Alonso's goalbound strike inches wide as Chelsea somehow had to settle for a single-goal lead at half-time.
Sarri's side finally had the breathing space they craved 25 minutes from time when Willian curled a wonderful free-kick into the top corner.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek should have killed the tie off completely when the England international blazed over from point-blank range eight minutes from time.
Kiev had barely threatened until the final five minutes and Brazilian Sidcley missed their best chance for an away goal by miscuing a header at the near post.
But just when the visitors thought they might find a route back into the tie, Chelsea hit them on the counter-attack when Loftus-Cheek teed up Hudson-Odoi for a third that should see the 2013 winners of this competition comfortably through.

Football: We might need 105 points to win EPL title, says Liverpool boss Klopp

WOLVERHAMPTON (REUTERS) - Jurgen Klopp said his Liverpool side may need to surpass Manchester City's record points total to win the Premier League after a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday (Dec 21) guaranteed them top spot at Christmas.
Goals by Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were enough to take Liverpool four points clear of champions Manchester City who face Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Liverpool, who have topped the Premier League table on three previous occasions without winning the title, have 48 points from 18 games and only two teams - Chelsea in 2005-06 and City last season - have had more points at that stage.
City won the title last season with a record 100 points but such has been the pace at the top this season that Klopp believes even more might be needed this time.
"Everybody asks me about the situation, first in the table and all that stuff and that the last four times a team was first in the table at Christmas they won the league, but was it ever such a tight race?" Klopp said.
"So far it looks like a really special season, 48 points before Christmas is crazy.
"But there are other teams. Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, they will probably win, then they will have 40-something points, nobody is dropping points from one down to five.
"You will probably need 105 to be champions, you don't know!" he added.
Tottenham Hotspur, in third place, have 39 points ahead of this weekend's clash with Everton, while fourth-placed Chelsea are on 37 before their home clash with Leicester City.
Liverpool's title challenge has been built on a rock-solid defence which has been breached only seven times in the League so far this season with Van Dijk outstanding.
The Dutchman even proved effective at the other end of the pitch on a rainy night in the Midlands as he scored his first Premier League goal to double Liverpool's lead.
"I'm more happy that I'm keeping clean sheets with my team and winning games," Van Dijk said.
"Obviously scoring a goal is a bonus and obviously a very proud moment and hopefully there's more to come, but I'm more focused on winning games."

MADRID (AFP) - Karim Benzema shot Real Madrid to within two points of La Liga leaders Barcelona with the winner in a scrappy 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano, while countryman Antoine Griezmann fired a brace in a 3-2 win over Real Valladolid to take Atletico Madrid level with Barca.
Benzema's 13th-minute strike was enough for Real to move up to third on 29 points, two behind Barca, who travel to Levante on Sunday evening (Dec 16), and second-placed Atleti. Sevilla have the chance to move back above Real and level with the leading pair when they host mid-table Girona early on Sunday.
However, they were made to sweat for the three points by plucky Rayo, who are second-from-bottom but would have snatched a point in stoppage time had Sergio Ramos not cleared the second of Thibaut Courtois' double saves, from Alex Alegria and Emiliano Velazquez, off the line.
Little was seen from Real stars like Luka Modric, who was presented with his Ballon d'Or ahead of the match at the Santiago Bernabeu, and fans showed their displeasure at the end of an uninspiring contest.
Earlier, Griezmann struck the winner for Diego Simeone's Atleti 10 minutes from the end after Valladolid had fought back from a two goal half-time deficit.
The Frenchman had played a key role in building the early lead. The World Cup winner laid on Nikola Kalinic's second goal of the season in the 26th minute with a superb through ball, then put his side two up on the stroke of half-time.
After Kiko Olivas handled Griezmann's long-range shot, and referee Undiano Mallenco pointed to the spot after a video review, the Frenchman slotted home a neat penalty .
The hosts came roaring back in the second half, twice forcing fine saves from Jan Oblak before Fernando Calero scored for the hosts from a 56th-minute corner.
Saul Niguez then inadvertently pushed Enes Unal's header into his own net nine minutes later, and Valladolid pushed for victory.
However Griezmann stole the three points in a frantic finale, cooly steering home the winner after a scramble in the box following a corner.

Football: Liverpool back on top as Shaqiri sinks United, Arsenals unbeaten run ends

LONDON (AFP) – Liverpool powered back to the top of the Premier League as Xherdan Shaqiri inspired a 3-1 win over bitter rivals Manchester United, while Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten run was shattered by a shock 3-2 defeat at Southampton on Sunday (Dec 16).Â
Jurgen Klopp’s side made it six successive league victories thanks to Shaqiri’s late double after United’s Jesse Lingard had cancelled out Sadio Mane’s opener at Anfield.Â
Shaqiri’s superb substitute cameo allowed Liverpool to reopen a one point lead over second placed Manchester City after the champions had knocked the Reds out of first place with their win against Everton on Saturday.Â
Liverpool’s first win in their last six meetings with United ended a frustrating streak against the Old Trafford outfit that dated back to March 2016, while also extending their unbeaten start to the league season to 17 matches.Â
While that was cause for pre-Christmas revelry on the Kop, more significantly, Liverpool’s refusal to be subdued by a United team set up by Jose Mourinho with five defenders was another statement of intent as they chase a first English league title since 1990.Â
Senegal winger Mane put Liverpool ahead in the 24th minute when he broke away from Ashley Young to meet Fabinho’s sublime pass with a nimble piece of chest control before shooting past David De Gea.Â
United equalised against the run of play in the 33rd minute as Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker made a hash of catching Romelu Lukaku’s low cross and Lingard finished off the rebound.Â
Â
Â
Alisson’s error didn’t prove costly as Switzerland midfielder Shaqiri struck within three minutes of coming off the bench, his shot flicking off the hapless Young into the roof of the net in the 73rd minute.Â
Shaqiri ensured Liverpool would return to the top in the 80th minute with a stinging strike that clipped the foot of United defender Eric Bailly on its way past De Gea.Â
United are now 19 points behind Liverpool in sixth place as the pressure mounts on Mourinho following another wretched display. Meanwhile, Unai Emery admitted Arsenal need to fix their leaky defence after Southampton’s Charlie Austin punished a howler from Bernd Leno to stun the Gunners.Â
Austin settled a thrilling clash at St Mary’s when he headed home with just five minutes left after Arsenal goalkeeper Leno misjudged Shane Long’s cross. Southampton had twice taken the lead through Danny Ings, only for Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s brace to draw Arsenal level on each occasion.Â
Leno’s mistake handed Arsenal their first defeat in 15 league games and brought a stunning halt to their longest unbeaten run in all competitions since 2007.Â
Emery’s fifth-placed team had not lost since a 3-2 defeat at Chelsea in August and the north Londoners’ first setback since the close-season leaves them three points behind the fourth-placed Blues, who won 2-1 at Brighton on Sunday.Â
Conceding Arsenal need to tighten up at the back, Emery said: “We haven’t conceded a lot of chances but today they scored three goals. That is a lot so we need to improve with this.Â
“We need to do some analysis on how we can improve and do better.â€
Chelsea put a week of negative headlines for the behaviour of their fans behind them on the field thanks to an inspired Eden Hazard at Brighton.Â
The Belgian provided his ninth assist of the season for Pedro to open the scoring and then chalked up his ninth goal of the campaign, but first in 13 games for club and country.Â
Solly March pulled one back with his first goal of the campaign, but Chelsea held on to restore some positivity after Blues fans were involved in alleged racist abuse of Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and anti-semitic chants during a midweek Europa League tie.Â
“He’s very able to come out and play with his team-mates, very able to create spaces. Now, in that position, he has to improve in attacking the box,†Sarri said of Hazard’s display as the spearhead of Chelsea’s attack.Â

We don't want to kill sorry Kepa: Sarri
We don't want to kill sorry Kepa: Sarri

LONDON • Maurizio Sarri has yet to decide if Kepa Arrizabalaga will start today's Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur, with the beleaguered Chelsea head coach to make his decision for the collective good of his group.
Arrizabalaga apologised to Sarri, the technical staff, teammates and supporters on Monday for refusing to be substituted in the final minute of extra time in the League Cup final defeat by Manchester City on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Spaniard, who saved one penalty and might have denied Sergio Aguero in the shoot-out, was fined a week's wages around £190,000 (S$337,700) for an act of petulance which had very publicly undermined Sarri's authority.
Chelsea had been keen to draw a line under the incident, issuing statements on Monday from the head coach and player while confirming the sanction.
Yet Sarri, who goes into the Spurs fixture fighting to retain his position after recent damaging results, offered the world's most expensive goalkeeper no guarantees that he would retain his place.
Asked whether Arrizabalaga would start, the Italian said: "I don't know. I have to decide. Maybe yes. Maybe no. I think he is fit. I have to decide what is better for my group.
"He made a mistake. A big mistake. There are some consequences. If the consequence is to play, he has to be ready to play. If the consequence is the bench, he has to be ready to go to the bench."
Sarri, who tends to reveal his selections to his team close to kick-off, rejected the notion that Arrizabalaga's dissent had exposed a lack of respect in which the head coach is held by the senior squad, and insisted he remained in control.
"It was a very unusual situation so the players were very shocked. It was impossible to react immediately," said the 60-year-old.
"I spoke to Kepa, I spoke to everyone. He said sorry to the technical staff, but it wasn't enough.
"He said sorry to the players and the club. We don't want to kill him."
The League Cup final loss to City and Chelsea's poor league form, with three losses in the last four matches, has heaped pressure on Sarri, but the former Napoli boss is not worried about his future.
"I'm not under pressure, you have to ask the club. I don't know why you ask me. I want to win every match," he said.
Defender David Luiz insisted that the players are still on Sarri's side.
"The coach has the power over the group. He has our respect," the Brazilian said.
"For me, there is not a problem here for that. We all believe in his philosophy, we all believe in the way he wants us to play."
A defeat by Spurs could leave the Blues six points adrift of the top four. They are sixth on 50 points, 10 behind third-placed Tottenham and they trail Arsenal, in fourth, by three.
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, meanwhile, has accepted an Football Association (FA) charge of improper conduct for confronting referee Mike Dean after last Saturday's shock 2-1 Premier League defeat, ostensibly over the corner that led to Burnley's opening goal.
The Argentinian was charged over two breaches of the FA's Rule E3, which concerns general behaviour and faces the prospect of a fine or a touchline ban.
He has publicly apologised to Dean.

Sarri, who tends to reveal his selections to his team close to kick-off, rejected the notion that Arrizabalaga's dissent had exposed a lack of respect in which the head coach is held by the senior squad, and insisted he remained in control.
PRICE TO PAY
He made a mistake. A big mistake. There are some consequences. If the consequence is to play, he has to be ready to play. If the consequence is the bench, he has to be ready to go to the bench.
MAURIZIO SARRI, Chelsea manager, on Kepa disobeying a substitution order during the League Cup final defeat.

Football: Salah and Mane send Liverpool top for now

LIVERPOOL (REUTERS) - Winter returned to Anfield on Friday (April 26) but while the temperature dropped, the standards of Juergen Klopp's side certainly did not as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both struck twice in a 5-0 thrashing of relegated Huddersfield Town.
Liverpool kept the pressure up on Premier League title rivals Manchester City, moving to the summit on 91 points, two more than City, but Pep Guardiola's side will regain top spot with a win at Burnley on Sunday.
Despite the wind, rain and freezing temperature, Liverpool had little trouble collecting their seventh league win in a row and with a trip to Newcastle United and home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers to come, Juergen Klopp's side could well keep that streak going until the end of the season.
Ninety one points was enough to win 20 of the 27 Premier League titles and Klopp's side could end the campaign with just a solitary league defeat to go with several other records - but none of that will count for much if Pep Guardiola's side do not drop points in their three remaining matches.
"Ninety one points. Wow, that's crazy. It's only possible because the boys play like they do, the attitude they have," Klopp said.
"You cannot ask for luck or destiny, you have to work for it. We said we want to write our own history, that's what we're doing. The boys are outstanding," he added.
Liverpool, who face Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday, were without forward Roberto Firmino who was rested due to a slight muscle strain.
Â
But Klopp's side do not lack for firepower even without their Brazilian striker.
Salah and Mane now have 21 and 20 goals each this season - making them the top two scorers in the Premier League.
It took 14 seconds for Liverpool to go in front with Huddersfield defender Jon Gorenc Stankovic giving the ball away to Salah just outside the box and the Egyptian fed Naby Keita who slotted home off the inside of the post.
Mane headed in the second in the 23rd minute, meeting a trademark Andy Robertson cross from the left after Virgil Van Dijk had started the move with a surge out from the back.
On the stroke of halftime, Salah put the game beyond Huddersfield when he latched on to a long pass forward from Trent Alexander-Arnold and knocked the ball past the advancing Jonas Lossl.
Huddersfield, who opted against massed defence and tried to be positive, started the second half in determined fashion, creating three promising openings, but Liverpool soon took back control.
Mane scored his second and Liverpool's fourth in the 66th minute, heading in a deep cross from Jordan Henderson and he went close to a hat-trick in the 78th minute when he headed a Xherdan Shaqiri cross against the post.
Salah made it 5-0 with a simple close-range tap-in from a low Robertson cross.
"All in all it was great, a really brilliant performance," said Klopp.
"Composure and everything that you need was there. So really happy.
"It's obviously an outstanding group of players, who did well against a Huddersfield side who are much better than this result shows. They had proper counter-attacks so we needed to be patient and we scored wonderful goals."
To add to a very positive evening, midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain returned to action as a substitute, his first appearance since suffering a knee injury a year ago.

Football: Arsenal bounce back to rout feeble Fulham 4-1

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal responded to their thrashing by Liverpool in the best possible manner reeling off a routine 4-1 humbling of struggling Fulham in their Premier League clash on Tuesday (Jan 1).
Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka had set Arsenal on their way with his fourth goal of the season. Alexandre Lacazette added the second after 55 minutes with their momentum temporarily halted as Aboubakar Kamara pulled one back after 69 minutes.
However, Welshman Aaron Ramsey came off the bench to make it 3-1 eleven minutes from time and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added a fourth.
Arsenal have yet to keep a clean sheet since beating Huddersfield Town on December 8, but a second win in six matches saw them move on to 41 points two points off the Champions League places.
Fulham have shown little sign of a recovery under Claudio Ranieri since he took over from the sacked Slavisa Jokanovic and are second from bottom.
The visitors did have their chances early on to break the deadlock.
First Fulham captain Tom Cairney sent Ryan Sessegnon clear of defenders with the simplest of passes only for the England under-21 star to sidefoot his shot wide of Bernd Leno's goal.
Then Andre Schurrle hit a dangerous low cross from the left and Sessegnon ran in behind Sead Kolasinac only to miskick with the goal at his mercy.
Fulham paid dearly for that miss in the 25th minute as Arsenal exposed the defensive frailties that have blighted their season.
Alex Iwobi spotted Xhaka advancing unmarked into the penalty area and flighted the ball into his path.
The midfielder had all the time he needed to control the ball and poke it past Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico.
Arsenal relaxed and created a series of chances, Xhaka and Sokratis having shots blocked, Aubameyang heading wide and Lacazette seeing a shot hit Rico's trailing leg.
A second goal arrived ten minutes into the second half.
It was Arsenal at their intricate, quick-passing best.
Iwobi, on the left, touched the ball forward to Aubameyang, who saw Kolasinac advancing inside him and rolled it into his path. The defender unselfishly squared for Lacazette to hit the ball past Rico from ten yards.
Kamara briefly gave Fulham hope when he made amends for Saturday's controversial penalty miss at home to Huddersfield - he had insisted on taking the spot kick himself - by arriving at the far post to convert Sessegnon's low cross.
The Gunners, though, put the game to bed 11 minutes from time.
Matteo Guendouzi and Kolasinac opened Fulham up down the left, Aubameyang smacked Kolasinac's low cross against the post and the rebound fell to Ramsey, who shot high past Rico's left hand.
Aubameyang made it 4-1 after 83 minutes when Fulham failed dismally to clear a corner and the Gabon striker's shot was deflected over Rico by Tim Ream's attempt to block.
