Football: Buchanan goal hands Canada slender 1-0 win over Cameroon in women's World Cup

MONTPELLIER, FRANCE (REUTERS) - Defender Kadeisha Buchanan scored on the stroke of halftime to hand Canada a winning start to the women's World Cup as they edged Cameroon 1-0 at a rainy Stade de La Mosson on Monday (June 10).
Buchanan came storming in at a corner and delivered a textbook header to break the deadlock.
Yet it was an unconvincing performance from Canada, who are fifth in the FIFA women's rankings and were quarter-finalists at the last World Cup.
Despite all their possession and passing, Canada managed just three efforts on target as they battled to get the better of the African's defence.
Canada's veteran captain Christine Sinclair could only muster several half chances in her bid to become the first player to score at five different women's World Cups.
Nichelle Prince hit the outside of the post just before Buchanan's goal and then also put a close-in effort wide on the hour mark.
But Canada almost paid a price for failing to add to the goal when Claudine Meffometou went just wide from a 70th minute corner in the only real effort of the night for Cameroon.

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned his under-achieving Manchester United players there is no "hiding place" for them and that they are playing for their futures at the club.
The United manager, whose side exited the Champions League this week in limp fashion against Barcelona, said he is looking to the likes of forward Anthony Martial and midfielder Paul Pogba to rediscover their best form as they battle to qualify for next season's Champions League.
United face three crucial league games with Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea that will have a huge say on whether they finish in the top four.
But, with big-name stars such as Martial and Pogba desperately struggling for form in a run that has seen United lose five of their last seven league and Cup games, Solskjaer has laid out demands to his players.
"Most of them have really impressed me in their attitude and, of course, there are some who need to get a reality check of where they're at," he said at a press conference ahead of tomorrow's away Premier League match at Everton.
"Every day in training, every game when you're playing, there's no hiding place and everyone can see what your level's at.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
Most of them have really impressed me in their attitude and, of course, there are some who need to get a reality check of where they're at.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United manager, on some players who are not performing to expectations.

"I've spoken to individuals and they know, and Anthony is one I've spoken to. Anthony's got a massive talent, signed a new contract and he knows we believe in him, so just keep working."
Solskjaer, who has seen his side's fortunes slide since he was handed the job on a permanent basis last month after a sparkling start as interim manager, said tests such as Barcelona are good indicators of whether players are able to play at such a level.
While the Norwegian has stated that some of his players needed a reality check, he has also come to realise the gulf in quality between his team and the top European sides.
He is, however, confident that United will be successful in the summer transfer window in hopes of bridging the gap.
"I've been speaking to the club. We've got scouts scouring the planet for good footballers and we'll sign players we think are the right fit, personality wise, price wise and quality wise," the 46-year-old added.
"But we know that we have to be realistic and have a job to be done. There's no quick fix, it's not like we buy seven players and we're in the right shape. We have to take it step by step and, of course, there will be signings made in the summer."
Tomorrow's trip to Merseyside represents a match sixth-placed United simply cannot lose if they are to keep up with rivals Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea.
Solskjaer has also called on his players to move on from the quarter-final defeat at Barcelona.
"We spoke about it, you have to get on with it quickly and accept we're out of the Champions League, no shame in going out to Barcelona (at the Nou Camp)," he said.
"We want to be here (in the Champions League next season) again and, to be back at these stadiums, we need to be in the top four.
"Players are in a good state mentally and they're strong mentally and, at Goodison, it's going to be a hard game."

Football: Spurs star Kane out until March with ankle injury

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham striker Harry Kane will be sidelined until March after suffering ankle ligament damage in Sunday's (Jan 13) defeat against Manchester United.
Kane sustained the injury to his left ankle in the closing moments of the 1-0 loss at Wembley and scans have now confirmed the extent of the problem.
It is the third successive season the England captain has missed games due to an ankle injury.
"Following preliminary assessments, we can confirm that Harry Kane has damaged ligaments in his left ankle, sustained during Sunday's match against Manchester United," a statement on Tottenham's website said on Tuesday.
"The striker will continue to be monitored by our medical staff as he commences rehabilitation and is expected to return to training in early March."
Kane was injured after being caught between United defenders Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof while trying to set up a last-minute chance for Tottenham.
He received treatment after the full-time whistle before walking off the pitch clearly in severe discomfort.

Kane's absence is a major blow for Tottenham as they chase the first trophy of manager Mauricio Pochettino's five-year reign.
The 25-year-old is Tottenham's top scorer this season with 20 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions.
He had scored seven times in his last seven matches to keep third-placed Tottenham in with an outside chance in the Premier League title hunt, the north Londoners sitting nine points behind leaders Liverpool.
Kane, who won the Golden Boot as the World Cup's leading marksman last year, also scored the penalty winner against Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final first leg.
Now he will miss the second leg at Chelsea next week, as well as the FA Cup fourth-round trip to Crystal Palace and at least six crucial league games.
The first leg of Tottenham's Champions League last-16 tie at home to Borussia Dortmund will also come too soon for Kane.
He faces a race to be fit for the north London derby against Arsenal on March 2 and the second leg at Dortmund three days later.
England boss Gareth Southgate will hope Kane is back in contention for England's opening Euro 2020 qualifier against the Czech Republic on March 22.
More immediately, with South Korea forward Son Heung-min away on international duty and Brazil winger Lucas Moura also injured, Pochettino is left with Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen as his only fit senior forwards.
Speaking before tests confirmed Kane's ligament damage, Pochettino had already admitted he was "worried" about the situation.
Midfielder Moussa Sissoko was also injured against United to further deplete Pochettino's options.
Janssen has endured a wretched time with Tottenham, while Llorente has hardly played either, although he did score a hat-trick in the recent FA Cup third-round win at fourth-tier Tranmere.

Football: Valencia knock Barcelona off Copa del Rey throne

SEVILLA (REUTERS) - Valencia beat Barcelona 2-1 to win the Copa del Rey on Saturday (May 25), ending the Spanish champions' four-year winning streak in the competition and denying them a domestic double.
Kevin Gameiro and Rodrigo Moreno struck first-half goals to give Marcelino's dominant Valencia control of the final in Seville's sweltering Benito Villamarin stadium.
Record 30-times Cup winners Barcelona struggled without injured duo Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele but Lionel Messi pulled the Catalans back into the game with a finish from close range.
Goncalo Guedes missed a gilt-edged chance in stoppage-time for Valencia but they held on to win their first major trophy since last lifting the Cup in 2008.

Football: Albirex Niigata still aim to win trophies despite squad overhaul

SINGAPORE - Keiji Shigetomi knows the magnitude of his task in his first senior appointment as head coach of reigning Singapore Premier League (SPL) champions Albirex Niigata.
After two seasons of sweeping all competitive silverware, anything less than complete dominance this term might be considered a failure.
But the White Swans coach, 39, is unfazed.
"Of course, I'm excited for the upcoming season," Shigetomi told The Straits Times. "I'm a little bit nervous too, because last year we were champions for everything.
"But I'm enjoying myself and I'm having fun. I feel fantastic."
He is not one to shy away from challenges. He had no qualms speaking to ST without a translator - which was not often practised by his predecessors - even if he admits his command of English is "not so great".
Just one match into the new season, he is already feeling the heat.

Shigetomi's introduction to Singapore football ended in defeat as Albirex failed in their bid to lift a fourth successive Community Shield - a non-competitive trophy - after losing on penalties to Home United last Saturday.
The loss has raised questions whether the new-look squad, with only four players retained from last season, can match up to their predecessors.
One of them is attacking midfielder Hiroyoshi Kamata, who said: "We could not win the Community Shield, but we are still aiming for success in the SPL and Singapore Cup.
"It has been said that we are weaker this year than last year, but I think this target can certainly be realised."
Skipper Kyoga Nakamura, a new arrival from Japanese third-tier side Yokohama Sports & Culture Club, added: "Now that we have played our first official game, we understand our places in the team better. We are working seriously to correct and modify what we have to."
Shigetomi, who arrived in Singapore in 2014 to lead Albirex's soccer school and stepped up to assistant coach for the SPL team last season, is keen to continue with the slick football of predecessor Kazuaki Yoshinaga's team.
The new man in the hot seat, however, realises that this is not a straightforward task.
Other than having to integrate a new-look side, Shigetomi also has to contend with new SPL rules which require Albirex to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two playing the entire first half.
The club missed out on several targets in the close season, but still managed to sign six local players.
"Six local players joined, but three are students, so they can join our (usual) morning training sessions only one or two times every week. So it is a bit of headache for me," said Shigetomi, with a wry smile.
The difference in culture will also take time to bridge.
The coach cited how his local players would arrive less than 30 minutes before training sessions.
In contrast, the Japanese players would report for training more than 90 minutes earlier to do proper stretching.
"But I have seen improvement and these days it is OK," said Shigetomi.
The former head coach of the Sanfreece Hiroshima Soccer School in Japan is optimistic his side will gel and grow as the season progresses and can challenge on all fronts.
"Yes, it is so difficult to do," said Shigetomi. "We need to have more quality in our passing and our defending.
"But I think over time, the players will understand each other more and we will get better.
"So our target is still to win all (the competitive) trophies."

Football: Arnautovic brace rescues West Ham in 2-2 draw with Brighton

LONDON (REUTERS) - Marko Arnautovic scored twice in the space of two minutes as West Ham United salvaged a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion after conceding two second half goals at the London Stadium on Wednesday (Jan 2).
After a dull first half, with striker Andy Carroll making his first Premier League start in a year as the lone target man before being replaced at the interval, the game between the two mid-table sides burst into life.
Brighton took the lead in the 57th against the run of play when goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski punched out a corner shot as far as Dale Stephens, who volleyed the ball home from the edge of the area.
The visitors went 2-0 up in the 59th through Shane Duffy, again off a corner kick, who flicked the ball in from a tight angle at the back post.
If West Ham looked to have crumbled, Arnautovic had other thoughts.
The Austrian pulled one back from close range in the 66th and equalised in the 68th when substitute Michail Antonio crossed from the right - with the ball almost over the byline - for him to fire home.

Even if Guardiola expects more twists in the title race, City are exactly where they want to be for at least a few days - and having worked their way back from at least two worrying positions.

Home snap Albirex's title-winning streak The long trophy streak has, at long last, been broken. Guardiola laments de Jong's move to Barcelona
LONDON • While Pep Guardiola was left purring with delight at his side's "desire to play good and always improve" as Manchester City romped to a 5-0 hammering of Burnley in the fourth round of the FA Cup, he also had a tinge of regret.
Not at his side's display at the Etihad on Saturday as the Premier League champions remain on course for an unprecedented quadruple, but rather at being beaten to the punch by Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong's signature.
The 21-year-old Dutch international, arguably the hottest midfield prospect around, agreed to join the Spanish champions from Ajax in the summer for a fee of €75 million (S$115.8 million) on Wednesday.
However, de Jong, who also turned down Paris Saint-Germain, had been in discussions with City regarding a potential move, telling Dutch broadcaster NOS over the weekend that he "spoke with Guardiola".
Having missed out on his services, the Spaniard felt the club had to be "quicker and smarter" in the transfer market if they were to land targets in the future.
Urging City's Abu Dhabi owners to try and sign players earlier in their careers so that they are more affordable, he said: "The transfer market, the salaries, increase a lot. After Neymar went to PSG (for €222 million), prices have increased to incredible levels.
"We have to adapt. It's difficult to buy top, top players at a good price.

SKY-HIGH PRICES
The transfer market, the salaries, increase a lot. After Neymar went to PSG (for €222 million), prices have increased to incredible levels. We have to adapt.
PEP GUARDIOLA , Manchester City manager, urging City's Abu Dhabi owners to try and sign players earlier in their careers so that they are more affordable.

"It's almost impossible. Maybe we have to trust in the young players (in the academy) and help them develop their own personality here.
"I said many times, Barcelona and (Real) Madrid, it's impossible to fight against them, for the prestige, the incredible league, the incredible clubs they are.
"The players have to take their own decisions. When they don't want to come, it's because they want another place. There are other options, but we are going to try if we believe we need players in that position."
He was also adamant that having the correct pay structure was vital to maintaining team spirit.
The 48-year-old, who splashed out a club-record fee of £60 million (S$107.1 million) for Riyad Mahrez last summer, added: "We try to keep the harmony in the locker room with the wages. When you have no balance with that, then there is always a problem with the mood in the locker room.
"One of the good things that City have done is keeping that balance.
"The reality is that it's not just one or two teams paying a lot on wages. There are many and sometimes, we can't compete with that. At the end of the day, we want players who want to come here."

Football: Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo could face former team Manchester United at ICC Singapore in July

SINGAPORE - In the space of nine months, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo could be set for his third reunion with his former club Manchester United.
After their Champions League meetings last October and November, the latest encounter could take place when the International Champions Cup (ICC) swings by Singapore in July.
This year's ICC in Singapore is set to take place at the National Stadium over the July 19-21 weekend and will feature four teams - one more than in the last two years - and two games instead of three like in previous years.
Sources tell The Straits Times that English giants Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are all but confirmed to visit the Republic.
United will play two games in Perth on July 13 and 17 first, while Spurs will announce their tour of Asia next week.
When ST was at White Hart Lane last month, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said: "We are looking to try... It is an option we like a lot and we would love to go. I think the percentage is high to be (in Asia) and meet you there."
It is understood that negotiations are ongoing to add Italy's Juventus and Inter Milan to the line-up.
The first edition in 2017 saw Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Inter grace the pitch of the National Stadium. Last year, it was Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid.
Although the fixtures will only be confirmed on March 27, the new arrangement means that the four teams do not need to take a break between matches and the weekend scheduling should attract more fans to the stadium here.
With the absence of a World Cup or European Championship this summer, it is hoped that top stars such as United's David de Gea, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford, Tottenham's Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, Inter's Ivan Perisic and Juventus' Ronaldo will join their teams here.
Alan Chua, a 35-year-old businessman who supports United and idolises Ronaldo, said: "I went to watch United beat a Singapore selection side 8-1 at the old National Stadium as a teenager in 2001. It would be a dream come true if both the Red Devils and Ronaldo come back this year."
While Ronaldo has never played in Singapore, he is no stranger to the Republic, having visited in 2013 and 2017.
Tottenham were last here in 1995, when they beat Singapore 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while Juventus beat a Singapore selection side 5-0 in the first football match held at the new National Stadium in 2014.
James Walton, sports business group leader at Deloitte Singapore and South-east Asia, said: "Realistically, the two EPL clubs that can really sell out the National Stadium are Manchester United and Liverpool.
"United would be far and away the biggest draw and a real coup for the ICC if they can get them here.
"Pre-season tours are often determined by factors like where the clubs' marketing emphasis is. In recent years, United, Spurs and Manchester City spent most of their pre-season in the United States, while Arsenal and Chelsea have been more willing to go to Asia.
"The ICC format varies from location to location. In the US, for example, it is a league format and, in Singapore, it was a mini league before. In some cases, it is one-off games. It varies depending on the availability of the stadium, the travel plans and requirements of the teams and what they are willing and available to do.
"Having four teams instead of three, with some of the names on the table, is quite interesting. In previous years, there is always one game with a slightly weaker attendance, and it is usually the one without an EPL team,
"Hopefully, if we can have an exciting EPL team in each game, like United and Tottenham with their well-known players who will attract a fan base, combined with big European teams like Inter or Juventus or PSG, I believe both games will see significant attendances.
"From that point of view and in terms of experience, one fewer game need not be a bad thing."
A spokesman for organisers Relevent could only confirm that the ICC matches here will take place in July and more information will be announced in March.
She added: "We are excited about the progress we are making in the planning of 2019 ICC Singapore, which will feature some of biggest and most successful clubs in the world."

Football: Makeshift Barca side beaten at Celta and lose Dembele to injury

VIGO (REUTERS) - Barcelona fell to their first La Liga defeat since November as the champions were beaten 2-0 at struggling Celta Vigo after making 11 changes but forward Ousmane Dembele suffered an injury setback ahead of Tuesday's Champions League game at Liverpool.
Dembele, who came off the bench in Barca's 3-0 win over Liverpool in last week's semi-final first leg, was one of few regular starters to face Celta as coach Ernesto Valverde made sweeping changes after clinching the title last Saturday.
The win took Celta on to 40 points and a step closer towards guaranteeing survival but it meant 19th-placed Rayo Vallecano became the first team to be relegated, after a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Levante left them on 31 points from 36 games.
Uruguay forward Maxi Gomez gave Celta a deserved lead in the 67th minute, sliding to the floor to divert a low pass beyond Barca's reserve goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen, after the home side saw a goal ruled out for a marginal offside after a VAR review.
Celta's captain and talisman Iago Aspas then sealed the away side's win by converting from the penalty spot after another VAR review ruled that Barca's Samuel Umtiti had handled the ball.
Barca, who lost for the first time since a 4-3 defeat to Real Betis nearly six months ago, have 83 points while second-placed Atletico have 74 after losing 3-0 at Espanyol earlier on Saturday.

Football: Chelsea boss Sarri, under fire after limp loss to Manchester United, doesn't fear the sack

Football: Chelsea boss Sarri, under fire after limp loss to Manchester United, doesn't fear the sack

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri insists he isn't worried about being sacked as Chelsea manager despite his troubled side's lacklustre FA Cup surrender against Manchester United.
The Italian faces a fight to save his job after FA Cup holders Chelsea crashed to a 2-0 fifth-round defeat at Stamford Bridge on Monday (Feb 18).
Ander Herrera headed United into the lead from Paul Pogba's cross in the 31st minute.
France star Pogba doubled United's advantage on the stroke of half-time when he met Marcus Rashford's cross with a diving header.
Sarri endured chants of "You don't know what you're doing" and "You're getting sacked in the morning" as furious Chelsea fans showed their frustration at the club's fifth defeat in their last 10 games.
Chelsea's stars, publicly criticised by their manager on several occasions this term, hardly looked to be battling to keep the Italian as they failed to muster a shot on target after the 11th minute.
Sarri's fragile relationship with his players, combined with the mutinous atmosphere among supporters, increased the feeling that the former Napoli boss might not survive until the end of his first season with Chelsea.
Demanding Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has acted quickly in the past when managers have been perceived to have lost the support of the squad.
But Sarri is adamant he isn't concerned about his perilous position and he claimed he is solely focused on salvaging his club's turbulent season.
Asked if he was worried Abramovich might be ready to wield the axe, Sarri said: "It's not my problem.

"I was only worried about my position when I was in League 2 in Italy, not now.
"I am worried about the results, not about the fans. Of course I can understand the situation.
"I can understand our fans, because the result wasn't really good. We are out of the FA Cup."
Chelsea supporters called for their club's former legend Frank Lampard, now in charge at Derby, to be hired and directed foul-mouthed abuse at Sarri, who suffered chants of "F*** Sarri-ball" in a scathing reference to his failing tactics.
"Not really very well, but sometimes yes. For everything there is the first time," he said when quizzed on whether he had heard the taunts from his own fans.
Sarri believes his situation will be improved significantly if Chelsea can string together a winning run, starting with the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie against Malmo on Thursday and the League Cup final against Manchester City on Sunday.
"It's really very easy. If we are able to win three or four matches in a row, it will be easy. Of course it's difficult to win five matches in a row," he said with a curious smirk that suggested he didn't really believe his own outward optimism.
"We need of course more aggression, more determination in the situation inside our box and inside the opposing box.
"My job is to work with my players to try and improve in a few days because we conceded the second goal without determination or aggression.
"The difference was there. We played 78 balls in the opposing box and United only 16 balls our box. We are supposed to win."

Football: Jose Mourinho says he lacked help in Manchester United job

LONDON (REUTERS) - Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said coaches need structures in place to support them as he broke his silence following his sacking by highlighting the difficulties he faced at the Premier League club.
Mourinho was dismissed by United in December 2018 after a rancour-filled final few months in the job amid media reports of conflicts with players.
Appearing as an analyst with BeInSports television, Mourinho repeated that his second-placed finish with United last season was one of the best achievements of his career and went on to outline the challenges he said he faced.
"People might say: 'This guy is crazy, he won 25 titles and now he says that second position with United was one of his best achievements in football," Mourinho said.
"I keep saying this because people don't know what is going on behind the scenes."
Mourinho made his point by talking about the set-up that managers need to have in place in order to be successful.
"We are not any more in a time when the coach by himself is powerful enough to cope," he said.

"The coach nowadays needs a structure, he needs a club organised in a certain way.
"The club must have an owner or a president, a CEO or executive director, a football director and then the manager. This is the structure that can cope with all the problems modernity is bringing all of us.
"A club must be very well organised to cope with all these kind of situations where the manager is only the manager and not the man that is trying to keep the discipline or is trying to educate the players," he added.
"(Former United manager) Sir Alex Ferguson used to say the day a player is more important than a club, goodbye," said the Portuguese, a former Real Madrid and Inter Milan coach.
"Not any more. The manager ought to be there to coach the players, not to keep the discipline at any cost. You need a structure to protect the manager and keep everything in place, so that the players do not arrive in a situation where they feel more powerful than they used to be."
United have won all five games in the Premier League since former player, Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, took charge of the side on an interim basis following Mourinho's departure.
Mourinho, who also had two spells in the Premier League with Chelsea, said he aims to be back in full-time management and has no intention of retiring yet.
"I want to coach. I belong to top-level football and (that) is where I am going to be.
"I am too young, I am in football for a long, long time but I will be 56 in a couple of weeks and am really too young."

Youngest local SPL Coach, 33, unfazed

Youngest local SPL Coach, 33, unfazed

He earned the necessary certification to lead a professional local club six years ago. But the opportunity never came for Khidhir Khamis, until now.
The 33-year-old will take the reins of Balestier Khalsa for the upcoming Singapore Premier League (SPL) season, after Tigers coach Marko Kraljevic left two weeks ago to coach Malaysia Premier League side Kelantan.
This makes him the youngest Singaporean head coach appointment in the 24 years of the SPL and its predecessor, the S-League which started in 1996.
Five-time champions Tampines Rovers had announced in December that they intended to appoint Gavin Lee, 28, as head coach once he gains his 'A' licence, which he will attempt to earn this year. Until then, he cannot hold the title.
The youngest local before Khidhir was Shasi Kumar, who was a year older when he led Woodlands Wellington in 2010.
Khidhir, who previously coached age-group teams at Tanjong Pagar United and Geylang International - where he also had a stint as head of their youth programme - until 2013, is relishing the opportunity to return to elite football coaching.
He had applied for several posts but "the doors just did not open", said the Victoria School alumnus, who had been coaching at schools and private academies.
He is now relishing starting on "something new and exciting" with Balestier.
Khidhir received his Asian Football Confederation 'A' Licence - which is mandatory for locals to take charge of SPL clubs - in 2013 at the age of 27. At the time, he was said to be the youngest Asean coach to hold the standard.
Balestier chairman S. Thavaneson said that eight candidates had applied for the role, half of whom were foreigners. But he had no qualms picking a local rookie to replace Kraljevic, who had been the Tigers' coach since 2014, and led the club to a first Singapore Cup that year before being named the S-League's Coach of the Year.
"Our local coaches, I think, have over the years stepped up and been able to hold their own in the SPL," said Thavaneson, who is also one of four vice-presidents in the Football Association of Singapore.
"I think more young local coaches will make the grade, provided they are given that opportunity.
"We, the management of local clubs, must have that... trust in local coaches and help them develop. Because helping them develop helps develop Singapore football too."
Khidhir knows his age will raise eyebrows. After all, he is only a year older than Balestier's oldest player, goalkeeper and captain Zaiful Nizam.

RESPECT IS KEY
It's about how you manage the players. I've made it clear that... (they should) not cross the line between player and coach, even though we are about the same age.
KHIDHIR KHAMIS, Balestier Khalsa's 33-year-old coach, on the small age "gap" between him and his players.

"It's about how you manage the players," said Khidhir, with a cool smile. "I've made it clear that... (they should) not cross the line between player and coach, even though we are about the same age.
"And I think they are professional enough to manage and handle themselves in that sense."
Khidhir, who visited the famed French training centre Clairefontaine at his own expense in 2013, plans to leverage on technology for a "more visual" approach to transferring knowledge to players. He is also exploring the feasibility of filming training sessions.
With "nothing to lose" in his first major coaching stint, he is keen to build on the work Kraljevic had done - Balestier finished sixth in the nine-team SPL last season - and try get the Tigers playing a more expansive game, although he was not ready to make any predictions yet.
Borrowing Nelson Mandela's famous quote, Khidhir said: "As far as I see it, we'll go into matches and we're either going to win, or learn."

But Geylang International Under-18 midfielder Azri Suhaili impressed their senior team's coach Mohd Noor Ali so much that he lasted the full match, becoming the youngest player to do so in the

Football: Mourinho avoids jail but hit by fine for tax fraud in Spain

MADRID (AFP) - Ex-Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has avoided jail for tax fraud as part of a deal with Spanish prosecutors revealed Tuesday (Feb 5) but will pay a fine of close to two million euros.
The 56-year-old is accused of committing tax fraud in 2011 and 2012 when he coached Spanish giants Real Madrid.
According to the agreement seen by AFP, Mourinho accepted a one-year jail sentence immediately commuted to a fine of 182,500 euros (S$281,908).
The Portuguese coach will also have to pay an additional penalty of 1.98 million euros.
Mourinho, sacked by Manchester United in December following a string of disappointing performances, is the latest high-profile football figure to be judged over his tax affairs in Spain.
Spanish prosecutors accuse Mourinho, who coached Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, of failing to declare income of 1.6 million euros in 2011 and 1.7 million euros in 2012.
The grounds for the case, as with a series of football stars based in Spain, is how income from Mourinho’s image rights was managed and declared.
Prosecutors believe by ceding his image rights to a series of companies based in tax havens, Mourinho committed fraud by not declaring the income those companies made from his image rights.

Football: Pele back in Brazil after hospital stay in France

SAO PAULO (AFP) - Pele arrived back in Brazil on Tuesday (April 9) after having surgery for a "severe urinary infection" during a six-day hospital stay in France that revived fears about the three-time World Cup winner's state of health.
The 78-year-old, who is widely considered to be the greatest footballer in history, was discharged late Monday from the private American hospital in the Paris suburbs where he had been taken after falling ill following an appearance at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.
After arriving at the Sao Paulo-Guarulhos airport in Brazil, Pele was taken through a gaggle of reporters at the terminal in a wheelchair and was driven away in a van.
"Once again, thank God, everything went well. I'm alive. Long live Brazil," said Pele, a gold cross hanging around his neck, after he arrived in Brazil's biggest city.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Brazilians and all those who called the hospital, who called me, for my operation, to wish me a rapid recovery," he added.
He also thanked the hospital for his treatment, saying: "France not only has great footballers, it also has very good doctors."

NEYMAR VISIT

In a statement on Monday on the Globoesporte.com site, Pele said he had required "medical assistance and surgery" for a "severe urinary infection."
Before he was discharged, current Brazil star Neymar, who plays alongside Mbappe for Paris Saint-Germain, paid him a visit at the hospital.

Neymar posted a photo on his Instagram account Monday of himself next to a smiling Pele in his hospital bed with the two holding hands.
Brazil's G1 reported that Pele had intended to come out of hospital on Saturday to return to his home country, but had been delayed because he had to undergo further tests.
The urinary tract infection was not serious and was under control, members of Pele's entourage had said.
Pele, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and perhaps most memorably in Mexico in 1970 when his swashbuckling team re-defined modern football, has had several health scares in recent years.
A similar urinary infection put him in intensive care in November 2014.
In 2016, Pele, who played 1,363 professional matches, scoring 1,281 goals, turned down the chance to light the flame at the Rio Olympics because he had undergone hip surgery earlier that year and was suffering from muscle pains.
In 2017, he appeared at the draw in Moscow for the World Cup in Russia but was in a wheelchair on that occasion too.
In January 2018, he cancelled a trip to London fearing a "stressful" and "tiring" journey.
At the event for a sponsor in Paris, Pele remained sitting throughout his meeting with Mbappe - the two men are the only teenagers to have scored in a World Cup final.

Football: Ex-England star David Beckham admits using phone while driving, police say

LONDON (AFP) - David Beckham has admitted driving his Bentley in London while using a mobile phone, British police said on Monday (March 18).
The former England football captain was charged after a member of the public told police they saw the 43-year-old on the phone while at the wheel of the car.
"The Met (Metropolitan Police) understands a postal guilty plea was subsequently received by Bromley Magistrates' Court," police said.
The ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid player was said to have been witnessed driving his 2018 Bentley while using his phone on Nov 21, 2018.
Two months earlier, he was accused of "shirking his responsibility" as a role model after avoiding prosecution on a speeding charge because of a technicality.
Enlisting the services of celebrity lawyer Nick Freeman, who is dubbed "Mr Loophole", Beckham accepted that he drove at 59mph (95kmh) in a 40mph zone in west London in January last year.
But he did not face further action because a notice of intended prosecution (NIP) was not received until one day after the statutory 14-day time limit.
This prompted Joshua Harris, director of campaigns for road safety charity Brake, to say it was "hugely disappointing" to see the role model "shirking his responsibility and getting off a speeding prosecution on a mere technicality".
Beckham was sent another NIP over the latest incident and was subsequently charged on Feb 5, according to court staff.
Using a hand-held mobile phone while driving in Britain is illegal.

The matter is listed to be heard at the court in Bromley, in the south-eastern London suburbs, on Tuesday, but Beckham is not expected to attend and members of the press and public will not be admitted.
The hearing will be an administrative one where a single magistrate may choose to impose demerit points or a fine.
Freeman also assisted Beckham in overturning an eight-month driving ban in 1999 after arguing that the footballer was trying to escape a paparazzi photographer.

Football: Red Devils enjoying freedom to attack

LONDON • Paul Pogba aimed a thinly veiled dig at Jose Mourinho by claiming that he and his Manchester United teammates are playing in the way that they want to since the Portuguese was replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The France midfielder, who was dropped after a series of run-ins with Mourinho, has scored four times, including a brace in the 4-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday, in the three Premier League games under Solskjaer.
The World Cup winner suggested that the interim appointment had given the United squad a new lease of life, claiming the players were playing in an attacking way that they enjoy, which was not the case under the Portuguese.
"It's different," the 25-year-old Pogba, who became the first United player to score at least twice in consecutive league games since Wayne Rooney in 2012, said.
"We still won some games with the old manager, it's just a different style of play. We are more offensive, we create more chances and play higher.
"This is how we want to play, we want to attack. The manager wants to attack. And that's what we are doing on the pitch."

It took less than four minutes for Old Trafford to be sure that the Solskjaer honeymoon was still in full swing. Marcus Rashford took the ball out near the touchline and there was seemingly nowhere for him to go with his back to goal.
But he, too, is revitalised. For his first trick, he turned sharply, slipping the ball one side of Nathan Ake and running around the other; for his second, pulling off an "elastico" that Ronaldinho would have been proud of to dart past a flummoxed Diego Rico.
Freed to play as a No. 10, Pogba was waiting to meet Rashford's low cross with a sliding finish.
It was the second time in three games that United had scored in the first five minutes; they had managed it just twice in the previous 25. The handbrake is off.
Bournemouth had a back five hoping to keep things tight, but they had no answer to the dominant hosts' swashbuckling style, going two down in 33 minutes after Pogba equalled his best tally of nine in one season for the club.
Rashford made it three before Ake pulled one back for the Cherries in first-half added time.
Pogba also felt the Red Devils have rediscovered their ambition and a winning mentality after beating Cardiff, Huddersfield and Bournemouth during Solskjaer's brief time in charge.
He said: "It was a great performance as well so we're coming back. There is still a long way to go, but to finish the year like that is beautiful.
"Maybe we have just realised that we are Manchester United and we need to be at the top of the league. You've seen the reaction of the players. Everyone is enjoying themselves and that's what we need."
He was denied his hat-trick by Asmir Begovic's fingertips before substitute Romelu Lukaku netted United's fourth, while Eric Bailly was sent off for senselessly scything down Ryan Fraser for the only blemish of the game.
Solskjaer was delighted with the £89 million (S$154.1 million) club-record signing's display and challenged Pogba to maintain his consistency ahead of tomorrow's league trip to Newcastle.
"That is a top performance from a midfielder because it's all-round, it's work rate, it's dangerous," the United caretaker manager said.
"He plays the efficient game and Paul knows he's at his best when he plays that game.
"It is the same I have said to all the players - we want to see the best out of them, enjoying themselves, expressing themselves, within the framework of how we want to see the team play. All of them have really performed up to top standards."
